My brand new Golden Inca Snail is floating...is he/she okay?

I am a new aquarium enthusiast...I went to Petco yesterday (after setting up my aquarium the day before and heating it to 72 degrees...setting up the way suggested to me). Anyway, I bought 1 rainbow shark, 5 danios, 2 black mollies, a dalmation molly and a Golden Inca Snail. When I put the snail in the tank, she sunk, with her body out of the shell, and hung out for about an hour. Then she crawled around, then up the side of the tank, where she stayed all night. I checked on her a short time ago and she was floating, her body out of the shell. Is she dead? Is there any good sites to learn about snails? Thanks!
Also, do snails eat flake food?
I've read at numerous places online and been told by a few people at pet stores that you have to have your tank set up for 24 hours. I did research and thought I was setting it up correctly.

Take her back to the store TODAY because you should be able to get another one at no cost if you bring her back before 24 hours are up.
Snails eat algee that gathers on the side of the tank or the food that fell to the bottom of the tank that the fish didn't eat.
