Gold Coast Cities of Interest

Coolangatta is the southernmost city along the Gold Coast.  The Point Danger lighthouse is located here. Coolangatta is known as a twin city with Tweed Heads located directly across the border.  Main beachc is about forty meters up the beach and next is Stradbroke Island.  Between Main Beach and Collangatta are Surfers Paradise and Southport.  The major riverway is the Nerang River.

Coollangatta is named after a schooner that was shipwrecked there in 1846 and shares the Tweed River and its big fishing fleet with its twin city Tweed Heads. It was one of the earliest settlements of the Gold Coast and was occupied by Europeans by 1828 when a convict station was built and the ample supply of Red cedar attracted lots of wood cutters so by 1883 a small township was in evidence. Because it was a border town with New South Wales there was a customs office and a government wharf and the extension of the railway from Nerang to Tweed heads ensured that Coolangatta would become an easily accessible holiday spot.

Point Danger is on the border of New South Wales and Queensland. It separates Rainbow Beach and Snapper Rocks from Duranbah Beach and the Tweed river. The light house is a Captain Cook memorial.  It is very modern construction and the first in the world to use lasers to increase it's beam. There is some controversy as to the name Point Danger.  It is thought that Cook was naming Fingal Head instead.

Tweed Heads economy is based heavily on tourism and some of the popular destinations are Mount Warning m a large Volcanic Shield and of course Lamington National Parks. It has also developed a reputation for being a great place to celebrate New Year twice, within the hour .Because of the change in time zones between New South Wales and Queensland and Tweed Heads close proximity to the border, it is possible to celebrate twice with a little bit of driving!!!

I has a signature at the bottom. A gold border on the bottom and on the right side. I has two pictures (one large, one small) on the front of the card. It has one B & W picture on the back of the card. No other markings.

Probably, one of those cards that are sold on eBay for $2.

USA delivers first gold in four-man bobsled since 1948
