Like moths to a flame, great actors gravitate to the singular genius of playwright-screenwriter David Mamet, who updated his Pulitzer Prize-winning play for this all-star screen adaptation. The material is not inherently cinematic, so the movie's greatest asset is Mamet's peerless dialogue and the assembly of a once-in-a-lifetime cast led by Al Pacino, Jack Lemmon, and Alec Baldwin (the last in a role Mamet created especially for the film). Often regarded as a critique of the Reagan administration's impact on the American economy, the play and film focus on a competitive group of real estate salesmen who've gone from feast to famine in a market gone cold. When an executive "motivator" (Alec Baldwin) demands a sales contest among the agents in the cramped office, the stakes are critically high: any agent who fails to meet his quota of sales "leads" (i.e., potential buyers) will lose his job. This intense ultimatum is a boon for the office superstar (Pacino), but a once-successful salesman (Lemmon) now finds himself clinging nervously to faded glory. Political and personal rivalries erupt under pressure when the other agents (Alan Arkin, Ed Harris) suspect the office manager (Kevin Spacey) of foul play. This cauldron of anxiety, tension, and sheer desperation provides fertile soil for Mamet's scathingly rich dialogue, which is like rocket fuel for some of the greatest actors of our time. Pacino won an Oscar nomination for his volatile performance, but it's Lemmon who's the standout, doing some of the best work of his distinguished career. Director James Foley shapes Mamet's play into a stylish, intensely focused film that will stand for decades as a testament to its brilliant writer and cast. --Jeff Shannon

Winner of the 1984 Pulitzer Prize, David Mamet’s scalding comedy is about small-time, cutthroat real estate salesmen trying to grind out a living by pushing plots of land on reluctant buyers in a never-ending scramble for their fair share of the American dream. Here is Mamet at his very best, writing with brutal power about the tough life of tough characters who cajole, connive, wheedle, and wheel and deal for a piece of the actionwhere closing a sale can mean a brand new Cadillac but losing one can mean losing it all. This masterpiece of American drama is now a major motion picture starring Al Pacino, Jack Lemmon, Alan Arkin, Alec Baldwin, Jonathan Pryce, Ed Harris, and Kevin Spacey.

Join Timothy Brooks - an overachiever with very little to show for it - on a breathless journey into the dark world of the modern sales job. From the ritual humiliation of the interview process to landing his dream job at the dreaded Haywood Fryston, a world of endless phone calls and novelty sales tricks, where the routine insertion of swear words into every sentence by everybody is the only form of stress-relief going. Meet his bosses: Vincent Candle ("take your foot off the pedal and the f***ing souffle deflates") and Aiden Starling ("salesmen are born in the balls, not the womb"), two of the pettiest patriarchs in modern literature. Follow Tim as he learns to write adverts for jobs that don't exist, lie and cheat his way to meeting arbitrary sales targets, and deal with new and exciting forms of abuse from on high; twelve hours a day, five days a week. Whether you hate salesmen, or want to be one, this book is a must-read. Find out how the world of sales really works, and why "hell is other salesmen."

Mamet's criticism of American society, theatrical inventiveness, images of alienation and betrayal, sensitivity to language, and continuing productivity make him one of today's leading playwrights. This critical collection of eight original essays and two recently published essays by noted American and European scholars, including Ruby Cohn, Michael Hinden, Dennis Carroll, Steven Gale, and Chris Hudgins, examines David Mamet's development from the beginning of his career to the present. Structural and thematic essays provide a comprehensive overview of his work in theatre and film through such diverse approaches as aesthetics, linguistic strategies, communal vision, recurring paradigms, comedic structure and purpose, influences of classical and Renaissance drama, and feminist perspectives. Additionally, interviews conducted during 1990 with director Gregory Mosher, who has directed more than 12 Mamet plays, and actor Joe Mantegna, who in 15 years has starred in A Life in the Theatre , Glengarry Glen Ross , Speed-the-Plow , Things Change , and Homicide , offer insights about the writer and his work.

Jack Lemmonâs 5 Best Films Now Playing on Satellite TV
Jack Lemmon was known late in life for the Grumpy Old Men films he made with Walter Matthau, a reunion of the Odd Couple cast from decades earlier. Though Lemmon’s collaborations with director Billy Wilder also produced some of the finest American comedies, Lemmon had more under his belt than superior comic timing. Over the years, he delivered many outstanding dramatic performances. Here are his five greatest films, featured on satellite TV.
5. The Odd Couple. The Neil Simon play came to the screen with Matthau reprising the role of Oscar and Lemmon taking on the Art Carney role of Felix. The beginning of their legendary pairing is an unqualified success and spawned a television show starring the late Tony Randall. Followed by a sequel thirty years later, you’re better off sticking with the original on satellite TV comedy networks.
4. Days of Wine and Roses. Featuring Jack in a heavy role, this Blake Edwards film follows two alcoholics as they struggle to keep their lives and marriage afloat. Despite the bleak nature of the film, Lemmon is inspirational in his portrayal of a drunk and confirmed his viability as a dramatic performer. Nominated for the Best Actor Oscar, Jack was passed over for Sidney Poitier.
3. The Apartment. This Wilder film has many hilarious moments, most of which involve the incredulity of office drone C.C. Baxter (Lemmon) as he tries to move up in his company by allowing executives to carry on affairs in his apartment.  Is it worth a key to the “executive washroom Jack decides no, finally, as the girl of his dreams (Shirley MacLaine) eventually proves to be worth more than a promotion.
2. Glengarry Glen Ross. The screen adaptation of the David Mamet play suffers slightly from its static locations, but benefits immeasurably from its stunning cast, which includes Kevin Spacey, Alec Baldwin, Ed Harris and Al Pacino. Lemmon delivers one of his finest performances as Shelley Levene, a salesman driven to desperation by the burdens of the job and his family. A gripping film on all levels, Lemmon somehow manages to outshine the all-star cast and picked up the Best Supporting Actor Oscar in the process. This film is featured regularly on satellite TV on the Independent Film Channel.
1. Some Like it Hot. “Nobody’s perfect,†as the famous last line goes, but this comedy is as close as a film can get. See Tony Curtis and Jack in drag, as they try to avoid the mob and woo Marilyn Monroe at the same time. The millionaire’s fascination with the cross-dressing Jack is priceless and Monroe reminds everyone why she was the world’s most desired woman. No one directed her (or Jack) like Billy Wilder, whose film is considered the best American comedy ever made and a favorite in high definition on Turner Classic Movies.
