What area of the game of Chess should a novice learn or master first?

I would think openings, since the game begins
with them,but some people say I should masters tactics,
middlegame or even endgame first.Opinions please.

Let me tell you what I, an experienced chess player, believes to be the case. My methodology may or may not be popular, but I am an expert in Terms of the art of teaching.

1-Acquire Basic Opening level Skills.

First.-Learn One White opening, I'll even Tell you which one to learn.
Kings Indian attack.

*Why?*

It's very short, Not many moves, and it's reliable and safe. Bobby Fischer used it and was successful with it as world champion it is by no means a 'beginner' or lesser opening.

For black learn 1 response against white playing e4,d4,c4,nf3. Anything else that flanks the board, acquire the central squares d4,d5,e4,e5. and adopt a Classical structure. (Look up classical structure, which will also be accompanied by it's opposite, modern structures.)

2. Acquire mediocre Mating skills.

If you can not finish a game you're no good. You need to study common mating patterns and train your mind to locate a mate.

3. Find tune your Tactical abilities to a Mediocre level.

You must first learn the tactics. Forks, skewers, pins, and so on. Practice identifying them and Setting them up.

Learn to remove the defender and take unprotected material.

You need to be able to look at the minimum 3 moves ahead, however I'd suggest looking as far as it takes to determine the solidity of the position.--Be capable of mentally visualizing what the board will look like after you accomplish goals.

4. Learn beginner Positional skills.

You must be able to determine if your tactical advancements will lead you to a positionally superior formation.

Positional considerations will glue your game together and advance it to another plane. but without the other piece of the game, your positional abilities will be almost useless.

5. Finally, Last and highly importantly, is the Endgame--Acquire Mediocre Endgame skills.

Learn king positioning, OPPOSITION with your king against another king. learn how to set up a successful endgame. Kind of ties into positional skills, which will, like i said, glue together your game and kick it up to another level.

Study typical king pawn endgames, Minor piece end games, how to mate with two bishops and king, how to mate with knight bishop and king, now to mate with rook and king. This goes back to mating as well.
