Filmed before (and quite nicely) in 1949, Frances Hodgson Burnett's classic children's story was remade for this admirable 1993 release, executive produced by Francis Ford Coppola and directed by acclaimed Polish filmmaker Agnieszka Holland. Splendidly adapted by Edward Scissorhands screenwriter Caroline Thompson, the film opens in India during the early 1900s, when young Mary Lennox (Kate Maberly) is orphaned and sent to England to live in Misselthwaite Manor, the gloomy estate of her brooding and melancholy uncle, Lord Craven (John Lynch). Because the uncle is almost always away on travels, struggling to forget the death of his beloved wife, Mary is left mostly alone to explore the estate. Eventually she befriends the young brother of a staff maid and Lord Craven's apparently crippled son, who has been needlessly bedridden for years. Together the three children restore a neglected garden on the estate grounds, and in doing so they set the stage for a moving reaffirmation of life and love. Filmed with graceful style and careful attention to the intelligence and cleverness of young children, The Secret Garden is that rarest breed of family film that transcends its own generic category, encouraging a sense of wonder and optimism to become a rewarding experience for viewers of any age. --Jeff Shannon

The Wiggles: Wiggle Time!

The Wiggles are Australia's hottest children's entertainment and it's easy to see why. This 40-minute video is packed with 16 fun songs that make children want to dance and, yes, wiggle. Greg Page, the main vocalist, has a pleasing, folksy voice reminiscent of Canada's Raffi. Murray Cook and Anthony Field accompany on guitar, Jeff Fatt accompanies on accordion and keyboard, and all three dance, wiggle, and teach kids song-specific movements and lyrics. The songs themselves have imaginative lyrics and catchy melodies, a fact that hints at Anthony, Murray, and Greg's backgrounds in early childhood education. Costarring with this foursome are four lovable, costumed characters: Dorothy the Dinosaur, Captain Feathersword, Henry the Octopus, and Wags the Dog. The majority of the video features Greg, Murray, Anthony, and Jeff on uncluttered sets with simple background props that set the mood without distracting viewers from the musical experience. The latter portion of the video features several live performances ("Wags the Dog," "Five Little Ducks," "Wiggly Medley") from The Wiggles Big Show. The tour brought the foursome to America in 1999. This award-winning group from Australia provides a fun, interactive musical experience for kids ages 1 to 6. --Tami Horiuchi

Purchasers of Disney's "Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah," the second volume of the company's Sing Along Songs series, may discover that not everything is as "satisfactchull" as it could be with this tape--it all depends on why you're buying it. If you've sought out the video because of a sentimental devotion to the musical the title tune is taken from, Song of the South, then you're bound to be disappointed. Disney's undying efforts to make nice have spilled into this segment (the first of a nine-song package), and all is sanitized so that the original film's disconcerting depictions of then-de rigueur racial inequality cause no modern-day discomfort. But that's not to say the scene of Uncle Remis strolling a hummingbird- and butterfly-lined road and singing his song isn't a sure-fire mood-lifter, or that it doesn't succeed in its mission, which is to jog joyful childhood memories. And it is the only way to see any of the film on video; Disney has no plans to ever release the controversial film. In fact each of this collection's numbers (all ingrained collectively on a generation now raising its own kids), aims to knead adult viewers' nostalgic sides (presumably part of a strategy to perpetuate Disney die-hards). Especially effective are Cinderella's "Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo," the Davy Crockett series' "The Ballad of Davy Crockett," and Snow White's "Whistle While You Work." --Tammy La Gorce

This surprisingly absorbing drama, based on Conrad Richter's novel, tells the tale of the re-assimilation of Johnny Butler, kidnapped as a child by Native Americans (in this 1958 film, of course, called Indians), into the "white man's world." Reluctant and unfamiliar with his biological parents (Jessica Tandy and Frank Ferguson), he's befriended by frontiersman Del Hardy (Fess Parker, basically looking handsome and playing his popular image), also raised by the Indians and now an Army man. Johnny also meets and fancies Shenandoe--his aunt and nasty uncle's indentured servant girl, (a positively luminescent Carol Lynley, 16, in her first role), whose family was massacred by another tribe. While this is an action film set in 1764, made in the still politically insensitive 1950s, it manages not to paint stereotypes. But Light in the Forest is, more than anything, a love story. Shenandoe, terrified of Johnny initially, grows to love him. Johnny, burdened by not feeling he belongs in either world, finds solace in Shenandoe's sweet friendship. (Ages 8 and older) --N.F. Mendoza
The year is 1764, when a peace treaty between the Delaware Indians and the British requires that all white captives be returned to their people. Johnny Butler (James MacArthur), kidnapped by the tribe when he was a child and renamed True Son, is forced against his will to return to his white family in Pennsylvania. His escort, frontiersman Del Hardy (Fess Parker) and Shenandoe, a beautiful servant girl (Carol Lynley, in her feature film debut), try to help the boy adjust to his new way of life. But the white man's injustice and cruelty drive him back to the Delawares, where even greater dangers await him!

A Star Is Born [VHS]

This film actually began with the idea of remaking A Star Is Born with the then-hot couple James Taylor and Carly Simon. Eventually, it evolved into this vanity production for Barbra Streisand, with Kris Kristofferson as the designated stud muffin. The story remains the same: A superstar on the decline meets a young singer on the way up. They marry as their career trajectories intersect, and his eventual demise is meant as a sacrifice to further boost her career by ridding her of the burden of him. Kristofferson's rock & roll numbers are decidedly lousy--Hollywood's idea of rock music--and Streisand looks good and always sounds fine (she won an Oscar for cowriting the song "Evergreen"). But you can feel her heavy hand guiding every shot; she seems to serve as puppet master for director Frank Pierson, framing every image of herself for maximum glow. The ultimate date flick (if the guy can sit still through it). --Marshall Fine

Secondhand Lions
List Price: $5.97
Sale Price: $3.23

If you can get past its thick layer of syrup and molasses, Secondhand Lions reveals itself as a thoroughly decent family film that anyone can enjoy. It gets a little sappy sometimes, but there's something to be said for a movie in which Michael Caine and Robert Duvall play eccentric old brothers who take the easy approach to fishing: instead of a peaceful rod and reel, they use 12-gauge shotguns. When 14-year-old Walter (Haley Joel Osment, teetering on puberty) spends an eventful summer with his great-uncles on their vast Texas farmland (he's been dumped there by his delinquent mom, played by Kyra Sedgwick), he soon discovers they've lived lives full of adventure, excitement, passion, and mystery. Either that or they're old-time bank robbers with a long criminal record, and writer-director Tim McCanlies (who invested similar warmth into The Iron Giant) does a nice job of concealing the truth until the very end. Full of enriching lessons and homespun humor, Secondhand Lions has more substance than most family films. If you enjoyed Holes, you'll probably enjoy this movie, too. --Jeff Shannon

Here are some more information for From Uncle:

The Paris Vendetta is an insanely long book considering the ultimate premise of the story. We have ex company men from the CIA, current CIA, multiple billionaires (but of course), and naturally bad guys. I grew up with Bond, men from UNCLE etc. etc. and this take over the world stuff does interest me, I just didn't get into this book as much as I thought I would. I am not a huge conspiracy theory kind of gal so maybe I'm not the best person to review this but it was written in a way that made you want to sit up and finish regardless of what else is going on in your life - I suppose that's a good thing.
We travel from Denmark to Paris and meanwhile get a whole history lesson about Napoleon. I had no idea he was so popular in France, and maybe his isn't and that is all fiction but he was born Corsican and those people apparently can't stand him. There are many theories about treasure he hid away that has never been found and that is another one of the story lines of this book. The details are sometimes a little too precise and I was ready for the action to begin again but I definitely learned a lot.
The main storyline surrounds a group of people who want to control the money in the world by controlling the markets and they form a club. Buy in to this club is in the multi millions - so only mega rich bad guys need apply. No, seriously it is a fast moving book with all the workings of a relatively good thriller. I will read others Steve Berry has written as he bases a lot of his information on fact. If you're looking for a fast paced conspiracy thriller then this is definitely for you.

A Sherpa Pet Carrier For My Uncle
Sherpa Pet Carriers are extremely hip in today's dog industry. I have written some articles on pet products, and while it is very nice to learn all that I learn when reviewing a pet product, sometimes I need to mix it up a little. I have had a lot of dogs over the years, and so has my family, so for entertainment, I have been writing about old dog stories. It has been rewarding to write about our dogs, and hopefully they get you reminiscing about some of the old times you have had with your animals.
My uncle could never figure out what was so desirable about owning a pet. He thought that my parents were insane to brag about their pets. In recent times, his wife has been diagnosed with a very serious illness which leaves her in constant pain. The pain not only has put a damper on her driving, but put a complete stop to it. It's hard to put myself in her situation and imagine being confined to the house after having a very enjoyable social life. Things were not going so great until a good friend brought them a poodle in a Sherpa Pet Carrier to watch for the week-end. Now it is their dog, and they own a few Sherpa Pet Carriers, one for any occasion. A complete transformation took place with my uncle, and he is now absolutely crazy about Sugar, the poodle. And to think, he never understood my parents of doting over their dogs. He and his wife take Sugar everywhere including funerals, and family reunions where the dog is given his own plate and dish of water on the table. He holds the dog with one hand and eats with the other. It is quite entertaining.
When you hear that dogs are wonderful therapy, my aunt is a living example of this statement. She has forgot dwelling on her pain and cuddles Sugar, transferring her attention away from herself to the safety and welfare of Sugar. The best part of this type of therapy is that any pet that relates to his/her master can be emotionally, physically, and socially adapted. When you coexist with a pet, it becomes part of the family. A Sherpa Pet Carrier is one of the safest ways to take your small pet with you, and my uncle has figured that out. A Sherpa Pet Carrier comes with a removable faux sheepskin pad for the most comfortable ride. Being removable, the liner can easily be washed to keep it fresh for any outing. The durable mesh side door and side panels provide plenty of ventilation and a great view for your pet as you stroll along.
This is one of the best totes for traveling as it is airline approved. The Sherpa Pet Carrier manufacturers are avid animal lovers and enthusiasts; therefore, they would like to insure you that your pet travels comfortably and with peace of mind for you. They have worked with major air carriers and developed a program called "Guaranteed on Board" which outlines the guidelines you will need when traveling with you pet to make sure your carrier complies with the airline rules and regulations. Sherpa Pet Carriers are the best on the market, and if you are looking for a way to travel with your small dog or pet, you should definitely check them out.

What is the normal high school Graduation gift from an Uncle?
My neice's graduation is tonight and I'm not sure what to get her. I'm thinking cash but how much?
50, 100? It depends on how set you are financially. The gift should be larger than a birthday gift, as it is for a major life passage. But do not outdo the parents gift.
Pakistani establishment had hand in father's, uncle's killing: Fatima Bhutto
Fatima Bhutto, the niece of slain former Pakistani prime minister Benazir Bhutto, firmly believes the country's establishment had a hand in the killing of her father Murtaza and uncle Shahnawaz.
