After an impressive debut season, the animated Star Wars: The Clone Wars roars back for a sophomore slate of adventures that tops its predecessor in both action and mythos-related dramatics. Situated in the Star Wars timeline between Episode II: Attack of the Clones and Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, the 22 episodes center around Anakin Skywalker's promotion to Jedi Knight in an attempt to rally the Jedis in the face of General Grievous's attacks. Joined by Obi-Wan Kenobi, he's sent to the planet Geonosis in pursuit of the villain, only to find its population enslaved--and worse--by the Separatists. The fight for the people of Geonosis is easily the highlight of the series, but secondary story lines offer solid intrigue as well, most notably in the arrival of bounty hunter Cad Bane, whose mission is to find children sensitive to the Force, and the appearance of Boba Fett, who vows to avenge the death of his father by Mace Windu. A rampaging giant monster, scads of political intrigue, and some genuinely impressive battle sequences all add to the enjoyment, but what really elevates season two is its darker tone, as evidenced in "Brain Invaders," where Anakin's torture of a prisoner gives a hint of his future, and the terrifying, zombiefied prisoners of Geonosis. The more serious approach, as well as the lack of comic relief (most notably, no Jar Jar Binks), will undoubtedly please adult Star Wars fans, though younger devotees might be somewhat disturbed by the turn of events; thankfully, there is plentiful action and derring-do to balance out the murkier deeds. Extras include substantive featurettes in which director Dave Filoni and his crew discuss a quartet of episodes, including the Geonosis story line and the influence of Godzilla on their own reptilian menace. There's also a detailed, 68-page booklet filled with character design and the artists' notes. --Paul Gaita

No Remorse, the sixth entry in the made-for-TV series of Jesse Stone mysteries featuring Robert B. Parker's small-town police chief, is another satisfying blend of detective thrills and character drama, anchored by coproducer-cowriter Tom Selleck's typically fine turn as Stone. Picking up shortly after the events of the previous Stone film, Thin Ice, the action finds Stone struggling with suspension from the force and his alcohol issues; intervention from old friend Commander Healy (Stephen McHattie) gets him back on his feet and on the trail of a serial killer preying on young men. Stone and his deputies (Kathy Baker and Kohl Sudduth) uncover a trail that leads them to Boston mob boss Gino Fish (William Sadler), whose secret past may uncover the guilty party. Meanwhile, Stone has to deal with a rash of convenience store robberies that have turned deadly, as well as his ex-wife and relationship issues with his new dog, Reggie. Though the tone is a bit darker than previous Stone features, and the resolution of the convenience store subplot somewhat rushed, the performances, led by Selleck and abetted by an all-pro supporting cast (which includes William Devane as Stone's shrink and Saul Rubinek as the hapless Hasty Hathaway), are engaging, and the direction by Robert Harmon top-notch. Sadly, No Remorse was the last Jesse Stone film to see production during Parker's lifetime, but under Selleck's stewardship, fans can rest assured that Jesse Stone will continue in good hands. Tom Selleck returns to the role of Jesse Stone, the troubled but uncompromising police chief of Paradise, Massachusetts in Jesse Stone: Thin Ice. The fifth made-for-television movie in the Stone series, and the first not directly adapted from a specific novel by Robert B. Parker, the engrossing Thin Ice is an apt title for a story that finds a pair of investigations and Stone's relationship with Paradise's town council looking perilous. Wounded during a murderous attempt on Captain Healy (Stephen McHattie) of the Massachusetts State Police, Stone sets out to find the would-be killer against the wishes of Internal Affairs, the Paradise council, and Healy himself. Meanwhile, a woman (Camryn Manheim) whose newborn baby was stolen from her and presumed dead years ago appeals for help from a skeptical Stone. The chief's usual problems with alcohol and the breakup of his marriage continue to haunt him, too. But none of that lessens Stone's determination to follow his own moral code as he takes on his superiors' shady ethics, a would-be killer, and a possible kidnapper. Selleck, the show's co-writer and executive producer, is much older than Parker's original character. But he certainly captures the soul and rhythms of the quintessential Parker hero, and brings a fitting, gruff decency to the role. Kathy Baker is very good as one of the two officers under Stone's command (Kohl Sudduth is quirky, good fun as the other cop). William Devane is a grizzled cipher as Stone's chain-smoking shrink, and Leslie Hope provides a film noir edge as Stone's cynical lover, a cop with the rather improbable name of Sidney Greenstreet. --Tom Keogh Stills from Jesse Stone: Thin Ice (click for larger image)
