Tangled (Four-Disc Combo: Blu-ray 3D / Blu-ray / DVD / Digital Copy) Tangled (Four-Disc Combo: Blu-ray 3D / Blu-ray / DVD / Digital Copy)
List Price: $49.99
Sale Price: $26.98

Disney's 50th full-length animated feature film, Tangled is a visually appealing, music-filled adventure full of romance and humor. The movie focuses on Rapunzel, a girl with long magical hair who's lived her entire life imprisoned in a tower by her greedy mother. Naturally optimistic and acquiescent, Rapunzel (Mandy Moore) rarely complains about her circumstances, but for her 18th birthday she longs to leave the tower to see the floating lights that appear every year on her birthday. Her mother (Donna Murphy) refuses her request, but when thief Flynn Ryder (Zachary Levi) climbs the tower to escape his pursuers, Rapunzel (once she's conked him on the head with a skillet multiple times) impulsively decides to trust the young man and convinces him to help her escape to see the floating lights. Thus begins a journey that alternates quite schizophrenically between optimistic excitement and guilty remorse that will ultimately change Rapunzel's and Flynn's lives forever. Tangled is a masterful blend of humor, adventure, passion, and drama combined with a great musical score and top-notch animation. The Real 3-D effects add to the experience but probably won't really be missed in other formats. Best of all, Disney presents a princess who matures from a meek and compliant girl into a spunky young woman who's not afraid to pursue her dreams and risk it all for love--now that's a Disney princess worth emulating. (Ages 6 and older) --Tami Horiuchi

Disney presents a new twist on one of the most hilarious and hair-raising tales ever told. Your whole family will get tangled up in the fun, excitement and adventure of this magical motion picture. When the kingdom's most wanted - and most charming - bandit Flynn Rider hides in a mysterious tower, the last thing he expects to find is Rapunzel, a spirited teen with an unlikely superpower - 70 feet of magical golden hair! Together, the unlikely duo sets off on a fantastic journey filled with surprising heroes, laughter and suspense. Let your hair down and get ready to cheer for "Tangled." Bursting with never-before-seen bonus features, it's even more enchanting on Blu-ray Hi-Def.Features include: •MPAA Rating: PG•Format: Blu-Ray•Runtime: 100 minutes

After unearthing Stephen Sondheim's youthful effort, Saturday Night, a couple of years ago, producers desperate to bank on the name of one of Broadway's last living titans continue chasing after obscure offerings. The Frogs was a 1974 adaptation of a play by Aristophanes and was staged by the Yale Repertory Theater for a week. This recording, the first complete one, boasts the presence of Nathan Lane, Davis Gaines, and Brian Stokes Mitchell. In Broadway star power, that's like having Jim Carrey, Brad Pitt, and Tom Cruise in the same movie. Evening Primrose was a 1966 ABC special, which spawned a couple of songs ("I Remember" and "Take Me to the World") that made it into the cabaret and solo recital repertories. Granted, these two pieces are for Sondheim completists, but they do provide an interesting glimpse into the mind of one of the musical theater's most brilliant auteurs. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

For a long time, Stephen Sondheim's 1974 compact offering The Frogs was known for two things. It was originally staged in Yale's swimming pool with a chorus that included Sigourney Weaver and Meryl Streep and its song "Invocation and Instructions to the Audience" has become a perennial in Sondheim tributes and cabaret shows. The show was given a belated studio recording in 2001 with Nathan Lane in the lead role of Dionysus. Lane then went back for more--literally, since he adapted and expanded Burt Shevelove's book--and Sondheim wrote several new songs. Finally, The Frogs was a full-length musical, staged in 2004. New tracks "I Love to Travel" and "Ariadne" are on par with Sondheim's best--the first a bouncy song, the latter a wrenching love song that could become a new recital favorite. While this recording is more enjoyable than the actual show, which could be a bit of a slog, it's hard to shake the feeling that maybe The Frogs should have remained a curio.--Elisabeth Vincentelli

Nathaniel's Nutmeg: Or the True and Incredible Adventures of the Spice Trader Who Changed the Course of History Nathaniel's Nutmeg: Or the True and Incredible Adventures of the Spice Trader Who Changed the Course of History
List Price: $16.00
Sale Price: $2.50

The tiny island of Run is an insignificant speck in the middle of the Indonesian archipelago--remote, tranquil, and now largely ignored. At the beginning of the seventeenth century, however, Run's harvest of nutmeg turned it into the most lucrative of the Spice Islands, precipitating a fierce and bloody battle between the all-powerful Dutch East India Company and a small band of ragtag British adventurers led by the intrepid Nathaniel Courthope. The outcome of the fighting was one of the most spectacular deals in history: Britain ceded Run to Holland, but in return was given another small island, Manhattan. A brilliant adventure story of unthinkable hardship and savagery, the navigation of uncharted waters, and the exploitation of new worlds, Nathaniel's Nutmeg is a remarkable chapter in the history of the colonial powers.

Would you believe that nutmeg formed the basis of one of the most bitter international conflicts of the 17th century, and was also intimately connected to New York City's rise to global preeminence? Strange but true: nutmeg was, in fact, one of the most prized commodities in Renaissance Europe, and its fascinating story is told in Giles Milton's delightful Nathaniel's Nutmeg. The book deals with the competition between England and Holland for possession of the spice-producing islands of Southeast Asia throughout the 17th century. Packed with stories of heroism, ambition, ruthlessness, treachery, murder, torture, and madness, Nathaniel's Nutmeg offers a compelling story of European rivalry in the tropics, thousands of miles from home, and the mutual incomprehensibility which often comically characterized relations between the Europeans and the local inhabitants of the prized islands. At the center of the action lies Nathaniel Courthope, a trusty lieutenant of the East India Company, who took and held the tiny nutmeg-producing island of Run in the face of overwhelming Dutch opposition for more than five years, before being treacherously murdered in 1620. To avenge his death, and the loss of the island, the British took the Dutch North American colony at Manhattan. (As Milton wittily remarks, although Courthope's death "robbed England of her nutmeg, it gave her the biggest of apples"). Inevitably inviting comparisons with Dava Sobel's Longitude, Nathaniel's Nutmeg is a charming story that throws light on a neglected period of European history, and analyzes its fascination with the "spicy" East. --Jerry Brotton, Amazon.co.uk

The 2009 Idaho Vandals finished 8-5 on NCAA Football Picks and beat Bowling Green 43-42 in the Humanitarian Bowl. Coach Rob Akey is not satisfied with being the poor relation of Boise State, who has the top football program in the state of Idaho. The University of Idaho is starting to look as it they have some staying power. Akey is entering his 3rd season as the Vandals coach, a welcome change after his predecessor, Dennis Erickson lasted only one season in Moscow. The Vandals shocked just about everyone last season after being picked to finish last in the WAC by league coaches. Idaho started the 2009 season 6-1 but lost 4 of their last 5, before the big win in the bowl. The team did lose 1st round NFL draft picks Mike Iupati and three other offensive lineman but they have quarterback Nathan Enderle back, and he is special. The defense returns all except one starter. The Vandals play four of their first six games on the road, but they open at home for the first time since 1998.

Idaho averaged 451 yards per game last season, and that ranked 9th in total offense in the nation. 286.7 of those yards per game was through the air, 12th in the country, the running game was the weak link of the offensive unit, as the Vandals averaged 164.3 yards per contest on the ground, that ranked 45th overall in college football and they scored just under 38 points per game. As good as the offense was in 2009, the defense was equally as bad. Idaho gave up an average of 433.5 yards per game, that ranked 107th overall in college football, the passing defense was terrible, giving up 278 yards per game, 116th in the nation, the rush defense was decent in allowing 155.4 yards per contest on the ground, the Vandals also allowed 36 points per contest, and that ranked 114th in the country. The Idaho Vandals went 7-5-1 against the spread in 2009, going over the betting odds total 9 times and under 4 times.

Quarterback Nathan Enderle is without question the focal point of the offense, Enderle passed for over 2,906 yards and 22 touchdowns last season, and that was with missing 2 games with a shoulder injury. There are question marks at wide receiver, Maurice Shaw is a big time deep threat and H back Daniel Hardy is also a weapon. The offense also need to replace running back DeMaundray Woolridge, Preston McCarty and Deonte Jackson will share the load this season. The biggest question is the offensive line, who only returns 1 starter.

Idaho will have plenty of experience of the defensive side of the football this season, but that doesn't equal talent, this unit needs to improve. The Vandals ranked ninth in the WAC, not exactly a league with top level defenses. Strong safety Shiloh Keo, a 4 year starter who led Idaho with 113 tackles and 3 interceptions last season is gone. The Vandals only had 7 picks as a team last season as a team. Linebacker JoJo Dickson had 79 tackles and 2 picks. End Aaron Lavarias, a second team all conference performer, will anchor the line after recording seven tackles for loss and four sacks last season.

Charliessports.com predicts the Idaho Vandals will go 7-5 on College Football Picks in 2010.
