Do collectors purposefully sabotage rare action figures by bending the corners or damaging them?

I've seen rare action figures that have bent corner or they have been opened and returned to the stores. I'm wondering if this is common practice for collectors to purposefully ruin rare figures that they already own just so they will lose value for others?

I've heard of some collectors doing this to "age" the figure to try to draw more cash from collectors when using newer items such as the GI Joe replicas from the last few years, but not when returning them to the stores.
