George Gershwin - Porgy & Bess / Trevor Nunn · Sir Simon Rattle · W. White · C. Haymon · Glyndebourne Opera George Gershwin - Porgy & Bess / Trevor Nunn · Sir Simon Rattle · W. White · C. Haymon · Glyndebourne Opera

Sale Price: $14.02

This powerful production originated on the stage of the Glyndebourne Festival. It was restaged and filmed on location for the BBC telecast preserved in this video recording. Director Trevor Nunn takes full advantage of the realism, fluidity of movement, and precision of small details that are difficult to achieve when televising a staged performance but easy and natural in a movie treatment. Nunn's vision, conveyed by an unusually talented cast, is constantly touching and rises to overwhelming intensity at climactic points. For example: the crap game and fight that end in Robbins's death, the hurricane scene, Crown's capture and abuse of Bess on Kittiwah Island, Porgy's fight with Crown, the comically sinister antics of Sportin' Life, the double-edged pathos and absurdity of the scene in which Bess gets "divorced," and the electrifying conclusion, when Porgy throws away his crutches and sets out, naively, to find Bess in New York. Musically, Simon Rattle and all the performers find the exact style for Gershwin's marvelous score--not only such big numbers as "Summertime," "Bess, You Is My Woman Now," "I Loves You, Porgy," "I Got Plenty o' Nuttin'," "It Ain't Necessarily So," "I Hates Your Struttin' Style," and "O Lawd, I'm on My Way," but such smaller items as the exquisite cries of the street vendors of honey, strawberries, and crabs. There are no weaknesses in the cast. Willard White and Cynthia Haymon are ideal in the title roles, Gregg Baker is a terrifying, larger-than-life Crown, and Damon Evans is a properly slimy Sportin' Life. The white police officers are splendidly repulsive. --Joe McLellan

This is an astonishing collection of works - or parts of works - by Mozart that covers almost every aspect of his creative output: symphonic, religious music, concerti (for piano, horn, violin, clarinet, flute), chamber music, serenades (for strings; winds), a couple of opera overtures and more. Those who know and love Mozart's music will not need this, but it's a great introduction, a great overview. The selections are well-chosen and interestingly organized, with familiar pieces splrinkled among some not-so well known. A good primer. --Robert Levine

How can you possibly go wrong with this one? One of the most popular of all operas starring one of the most popular of all opera stars singing one of her true signature roles--it's a no-brainer. This 1976 performance from the Filene Center of Wolf Trap Farm Park for the Performing Arts in Virginia stars Beverly Sills in all her silky voiced glory. As Violetta, Verdi's most sympathetic tragic heroine, America's most beguiling diva is pitch-perfect all the way through several of the composer's miraculously melodic arias. Her lover, Alfredo, is played by Henry Price, who holds his own admirably with the superstar. Verdi specialist Julius Rudel conducts a finely detailed account of the score, and Tito Capobianco's production is an appropriate primer for novice opera fans--the vivid sets and costumes never detract from the central love story. Kirk Browning's straightforward video direction follows suit. --Kevin Filipski

Gilbert & Sullivan - The Mikado (Stratford Festival) [VHS] Gilbert & Sullivan - The Mikado (Stratford Festival) [VHS]
List Price: $14.99
Sale Price: $23.99

A video of a 1982 performance at Canada's Stratford Festival (live, though with some singing dubbed), this is very much a theatrical experience, with the buoyancy of a show played before an audience. The cast and spectators take obvious pleasure in each other, and in classic Gilbert and Sullivan tradition, several numbers are encored. Subtlety is not this production's strong point, but you don't look to G&S for subtlety. As Ko-Ko, Eric Donkin doesn't exactly create a character. His performance is that of a vaudeville clown--he even wears a Japanese version of baggy pants. But his straight-to-the-audience delivery is irresistible. Gidon Saks plays the title role in Japanese-theater style, drawing out his syllables, rising to a scream at the end of a sentence. Though these mannerisms are a bit much, his demented tyrant of a Mikado is gripping and even spooky. The production is not lavish, with a single, unadorned set and fairly basic staging. But there are some brilliant effects such as the entrance of the Mikado, enclosed in a litter, which his carriers open to reveal him standing magnificently in a miniature interior. Many of the comic lines have been updated, and with impressive wit. It's too bad that their topicality results in a lot of 1980s Canadian references, which will leave 21st-century non-Canadians feeling left out. Still, this is a highly satisfying interpretation of a classic. --David Olivenbaum

Macau Art Festival - Adding Color to Life

Dance, music, films, puppet shows, theater – everything that represents Macau as well as different cultures all over the world are represented and enjoyed over a week that include two art exhibitions on a very large scale. The Macau Arts Festival takes place in different venues, each of which has stories to tell, if you listen, including the Cultural Center, Dr. Sun Yat Sen Municipal Park, Senado Square and the Ruins of St. Paul.

This event, which is the brainchild of the Cultural Institute of Macau SAR Government, includes everything you can think of, from Chinese farces like “Who’s the Father?” to comedies and puppet shows for children, like “The Little Match Girl”.

Cantonese and Kun operas are part of the rich culture of Macau that the festival celebrates, so you can live the experience. Now, with technology, there are facets of art and science that meld to form a new whole. Multimedia shows are an important part of the Macau Arts Festival. ‘Amina and Lili’ is one of the favorites.

Different kinds of dance and music are part of the Macau Arts Festival. Cultures and art forms from different countries are also integral to the spirit of the festival. Maktoub, a performance by a Gypsy group, is one such example. Operas like ‘Flowers in the Moonlight’ are always enjoyed by everybody. Ballet is yet another beautiful and graceful form of art that is given due importance by the festival, especially with performances like ‘Raise the Red Lantern’ and ‘Coppelia’. Portuguese Marta Plantier is one of many singers who have graced the festival with their beautiful voices. Folk dances from Mexico and Portugal, fire dancers from America and clowns from Canada all add to the truly international feel of this festival.

Performance arts do not overshadow arts and crafts. After all, arts and crafts are an important part of the Chinese heritage, with all the beautiful and enchanting creations of clay, paper and leaves that have received such acclaim worldwide. During the weekend, these works of art, as well as many paintings, are given their turn in the spotlight with the Arts and Crafts Fair. Traditional Chinese music is also a very big part of the festival, with both orchestra and solo performances. Chinese treasures are never ignored in this festival.

Your hotel in Macau will probably be able to arrange tickets for you to attend this fantastic festival. If you are staying at a luxury hotel Macau offering special packages for the festival, you'll find some great deals.
