An interesting and original idea that's very skillfully executed, Showtime's Dexter is never less than watchable, often quite compelling, and sometimes thoroughly riveting. As the 12 episodes from the show's first season (packaged here in a four disc set) reveal, it's also the epitome of "high concept," a kind of Silence of the Lambs for the C.S.I. generation. Creator-executive producer James Manos Jr.'s title character, one Dexter Morgan (played by Michael C. Hall of Six Feet Under renown), works for the Miami Police Department as an blood spatter analyst, visiting crime scenes and helping figure out what happened. He has an avocation, too: during his off hours, he tracks down some very, very bad people who for various reasons have eluded the proper authorities. Seems his adoptive father, a cop himself, taught the kid how to channel his dark side in a "positive" direction; and so, having captured these evildoers (including a child molester-murderer and a recidivist drunk driver with a trail of bodies in his wake), Dex dispatches them with clinical precision, thus making him a serial killer who snuffs serial killers. But there's more--much more, as it turns out. By his own description, Dexter is "a monster," an empty shell who fakes all human interactions and admits to no real feelings for anything or anyone, including his foster sister (Jennifer Carter) and his nominal girlfriend (Julie Benz), a former crack addict and battered spouse who's as uninterested in sex as he is. There's an explanation for Dexter's weirdness, of course, one so deep and traumatic that even he isn't aware of it. It's gradually revealed over the course of the season as he and the cops (who include Erik King, Lauren Velez, and David Zayas, all first-rate) track down the so-called "Ice Truck Killer," a fellow monster whose grisly m.o. both fascinates and taunts our hero, leading to a genuinely shocking and squirm-inducing finale. Dexter can be a bit arch, with an ironic, too-hip-for-the-room tone that get a little old. Still, it's a safe bet that anyone who views this first season will be salivating for the second. Extras include audio commentary on two episodes, a featurette about real-life blood spatter analysis, and a variety of DVD-ROM items. --Sam Graham Beyond Dexter More TV Head-cases on DVD The Book that Started It All More from Showtime Stills from Dexter: The First Season (click for larger image)

Music has long been considered a universal language with the power to bring people together, but can the simple act of playing music possibly unite a child with a mother and father who live in two different cities and don't even know of the child's existence? Having shared one extraordinary night, classical cellist Lyla Novacek (Keri Russell) and Irish singer and songwriter Louis Connelly (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) were a union meant to be that was torn apart by circumstances and a protective father (William Sadler). After eleven years, both Lyla and Louis have given up performing only to find that they are unhappy and searching for a sense of fulfillment that will ultimately lead both artists back to music and performing. Evan (Freddie Highmore) is an 11-year old orphan who's grown up hearing music in everything around him and is convinced that his real parents want him and will find him with the help of music. Driven by his innate musical genius and a powerful compulsion to perform before the world, Evan runs away from the orphanage and is initially taken in by a street man known as Wizard (Robin Williams) who encourages his musical talent and renames him August Rush and, later, by a local priest who arranges for August to receive a Julliard education. August is a child prodigy who excels beyond even the wildest expectations and earns the opportunity of a lifetime--a chance to perform in front of an enormous audience in New York's Central Park. The question is; can his performance possibly reach the audience August really craves? While elements of this film are completely unbelievable (take August's instant prowess on the guitar or his immediate and sophisticated grasp of musical notation and musical theory), the message of the universality of music and the notion that "the music is all around us, all you have to do is listen" is both compelling and powerful. --Tami Horiuchi

Here are some more information for Father Knows:

Prv:18:2 A Fool Receiveth Not The Words Of Prudence: Unless Thou Say Those Things Which Are In His Heart
So what does that say about us? We all like to be told we're right. We all like to hear how smart we are. We all want confirmation. Most of us hate it when someone points out when we're wrong.
If you pick up the Bible, and don't come away thinking yourself a fool, you're not paying attention. Because every book of the Bible is full of passages that show us how foolish we are. The book of proverbs particularly points out our intellectual limitations.
Does God really have a fetish for identifying our flaws? Like a father who can never admit his son turned out all right? Yes and no. It all hangs on that quote from Christ: "Mk:10:15 Amen I say to you, whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child shall not enter into it."
A lot of people misinterpret that to mean learning and understanding our faith is fruitless. They confuse the word "childlike" for "simplistic", but the two have very different meanings. Anyone who has children realizes that they aren't simple at all. But what about them are we suppose to imitate?
The Father / Son Relationship
Remember that Christ compares God's relationship with us to the relationship between a father and son. In this case, the son would be a child. And a child has to rely on the wisdom and knowledge of his father for everything he has (remember that when Jesus is speaking, the father was the common provider in the household).
Providing is only one of the father's functions. A good father guides his son to safety, and sometimes forces him there. Why? Because a child doesn't always know what will harm him and what won't. The child thinks he wants cookies for supper...the father knows that this would harm him. The obedient son accepts his father's authority, even if he doesn't understand it.
But the ignorance doesn't release the child from responsibility. The father might use his authority to lay a foundation, but expects the son to some day understand the reasons behind his actions. The father expects his son to grow and mature...but always realize his own inferiority to the father. Always ready to accept his father's direction.
It's the same with God and us. We're not so much commanded to accept our foolishness (or simplicity) but to realize it and accept the Christ's authority when we disagree. Sometimes this means accepting the rule of Christ's Church, and is an act of will. Sometimes, it's forced upon us. Like when we face some disaster and wonder "How could God let this happen to me?"
This is what it means to have child-like faith. This is how we'll enter into heaven. And this is why the Bible constantly points out our foolishness. Because in the shadow of God, our own intellect and knowledge of what's good for us isn't always focused. And the more we realize it, the more it becomes our duty to gain that understanding, but accept authority until we do.

Father Knows Best
Robert Young and Jane Wyatt starred in a popular TV series from 1954 to 1960 that was entitled, Father Knows Best. He still does and He always will. Father is one of many words, titles, or concepts for the Creator of ALL things. Other cultures and names include: Consciousness, Allah, Jehovah, Buddha, and Mohammed just to mention a few. What Jesus did on the Cross will always remain a mystery, but this we know.
Focus on Dad, Abba Father.
The Ronmans and Pharisees looked upon Jesus as a criminal, the act was a judicial one, and an execution. I assure you that's not how Jesus saw it nor is it all that happened- not nearly all. From my perspective, looking back over 2,000 years, and trying to overcome several decades of religious indoctrination (not all of it was bad of course- in fact most was good).
The way I have to view the cross is that of a man, a special son (though we're all sons- and daughters), who loved the one who created Him so much, had such an intimacy with the Father, this Spirit of Consciousness, that He could not go against what He saw- LOVE! And it was Love, which is non-violent, that caused Jesus to not resist, nor fight what He saw coming.
In the garden He prayed that their might be another way, a place to run, a way to fight without killing and being violent like those whom were opposig Him. Jesus came to the conclusion that the only way to fight was with unconditional love. To what degree that He saw Himself as a symbol of the Old Testament lamb I know not. To what degree He felt that He was the Messiah in some new and unique way we can all debate.
But once again, this I have come to. He knew God, the Creator, abba Father. And it was that knowledge of the Father that told Him to FIGHT was not God. So therein I can't conclude that God demanded the death of Jesus, that God is cruel and bloo-thirsty. No, my God is loving and the consequences of the life that Jesus lived led Him to the unique and world-transforming event of the Cross.
So, this is the question for you, for me. To what end, what consequences is God taking you? Are you afraid? Jesus was so why can't you and I. But, will we obey, meaning be true to the image that God is, that I AM, that YOU ARE?
We're still painting, and the last chapter is yet to be written by you and I. May we live, write, and paint well!
About the Author
As a spiritual-futurist my commentaries and articles deal primarily with an interpretation of current events in light of macro-universal forces at play.
Why do some Christians say that Christ is coming soon when the Bible says only the Father knows?
Another contradiction?
Christians are to anticipate the second advent with lives that are ready, and with great joy. No place in history has there been a greater anticipation, with the exception of the early church. The reasons are the end-time prophecy's are fulfilled or near fulfillment.
Isaiah 66, indeed in 1948 when a nation was born in an instant, Israel. This ushered in a definitive season in history. Isaiah 66, when related to the Parable of the Fig Tree found in Matthew, Mark, and Luke, we find the time is near, very near. We do not know the day, or hour. However, the Lord has revealed the season, I believe it is now summer.
