Essential Leonard Cohen

This two-disc retrospective traces the Canadian bard's musical maturity from poet and novelist who sang a little to multidimensional artist whose oracular vocals and increasingly rich arrangements are every bit as compelling as his verse. Even when Cohen came to prominence through the 1960s songcraft of "Suzanne" and "Bird on a Wire," the "folksinger" tag never really fit. Later highlights ranging from the deadpan drollery of "Tower of Song" and "Everybody Knows" to the apocalyptic anthemry of "First We Take Manhattan" and "Democracy" suggest that other labels might be more appropriate: cabaret surrealist, spiritual gadfly, sensual prophet, agent provocateur. Cohen chose the selections, drawing more than half of the 31 tracks from three landmark albums--his 1967 debut Songs of Leonard Cohen, 1988's I'm Your Man, and 1992's The Future--along with four from 2001's Ten New Songs. The collection justifies its title as deep as it goes, though it's a shame that Cohen's commercial profile couldn't justify the more elaborate box set his artistry warrants (one that would at least include lyrics and musician credits). Those who sample the consistently inspired music here might come to the conclusion that everything Cohen records is essential. --Don McLeese

Writer-director Woody Allen has produced yet another challenging and funny film, this time taking on the musical genre and bending it to his own unique vision. The result is one of the most charming films in recent years, as Allen assembles a typically sterling ensemble cast to evoke the romanticism of years past. This time, the large cast (including Alan Alda, Drew Barrymore, Goldie Hawn, Edward Norton, and Tim Roth) not only turn in funny and touching performances, but they sing the classic songs of the 1930s and 1940s themselves, and sing them very well. The plot centers on an extended family in New York and their various romantic entanglements, including Allen's pursuit of Julia Roberts through the streets of Paris and the canals of Venice. The musical numbers are the film's high point, displaying wonderful choreography ranging from a room full of dancing Groucho Marxes to a dancing couple in flight at the banks of the Seine. Everyone Says I Love You is a witty and entertaining fantasy, and a truly romantic escape. --Robert Lane
Romance meets comedy in Woody Allen's first movie musical, and it's a glorious celebration of love that had audiences laughing and critics cheering. In intertwining stories, Joe's (Woody Allen) attempt to win the heart of Von (Julia Roberts) takes him to scenic Venice and Paris, while his ex-wife, Steffi (Goldie Hawn), and her current husband, Bob (Alan Alda), deal with erupting family matters in their swank but crowded Manhattan apartment. In the meantime, Steffi and Bob's daughter, Skylar (Drew Barrymore), is torn between two boyfriends (Edward Norton and Tim Roth), adding to the complications. But through it all, Allen's dream cast knows the perfect moment to express their emotions with a classic love song or a hilarious production number. Musical comedy has seldom been played with such wit, humor, and sophistication. Get ready to fall in love with love ... and to sing the praises of EVERYONE SAYS I LOVE YOU!

"Hi, I'm Ray and I live here in Long Island with my wife, Debra." Thus Ray (Ray Romano) introduces himself in the opening to each episode of his Emmy-winning comedy series. He proceeds to mention their children (Ally, Michael, and Geoffrey), then notes as an aside, "It's not really about the kids." He's right--it isn't. They don't even appear in each episode. Everybody Loves Raymond looks like any other family sitcom, but isn't. Everything is just a little bit better. Sure, it isn't as clever as Seinfeld (on which Romano and Brad Garrett appeared in their early days) or as sophisticated as Frasier; nor is it trying to be. The real subject of the show is Ray's relationship with Debra (Patricia Heaton), parents Frank and Marie (Doris Roberts and Peter Boyle), and brother Robert (Garrett). Everybody Loves Raymond trains a microscope on the day-to-day ephemera of Ray's life. And since he's a sportswriter, a number of sports stars made guest appearances during the first season, including Kareem Abdul-Jabbar ("Frank, the Writer") and Terry Bradshaw ("Debra's Sick"), but this will happen less often in the years to come. On the surface, Ray has an ideal life, but he's always trying to please everyone; and someone inevitably feels left out. Sometimes it's Debra, sometimes Frank and Marie, sometimes Robert, and sometimes his buddies (including King of Queens star Kevin James). Then there are his in-laws (Katherine Helmond and Robert Culp). If this were a different kind of show, Ray would have a breakdown at the end of each episode, but instead he finds a solution to each problem--and it usually comes from Debra. In short order, Everybody Loves Raymond became a top-rated program, with several cast members winning Emmys--numerous times in the case of small-screen scene-stealer Doris Roberts. -- Kathleen C. Fennessy
Standup comedian Ray Romano stars as Ray Barone, a successful sportswriter who deals with his brother and parents, who happen to live across the street. Patricia Heaton ("The Goodbye Girl"), Peter Boyle ("While You Were Sleeping"), Doris Roberts ("Remington Steele"), and Brad Garrett ("Gleason") round out the stellar cast.

The oil business, politics, Inuit customs, and animal preservation normally don't mix, especially when the press gets involved. But a funny thing happens when Alaska television reporter Adam Carlson (John Krasinski) discovers a trio of gray whales trapped in the ice near the small town of Point Barrow. Adam's report gets national exposure, and his ex-girlfriend and Greenpeace worker Rachel (Drew Barrymore) hears the story, begins lobbying politicians to save the whales, and hops a plane for Alaska. The story reaches the local Inupiat people and millions of Americans, including oil tycoon J.W. McGraw (Ted Danson), presidential aide Kelly Meyers (Vinessa Shaw), Marine colonel Scott Boyer (Dermot Mulroney), and Los Angeles reporter Jill Jerard (Kristen Bell). Each gets involved in the fight for their own distinct reason. The Inupiat whalers decide to help the whales rather than hunt them, in a round-about effort to preserve their way of life, while McGraw sees the project as an opportunity to make his environmentally unfriendly oil-drilling business look like it cares about the earth. Meyers sees an opportunity to curry political popularity for President Reagan, while Boyer is simply following orders and Jerard is looking to advance her career. The group forms an unlikely alliance and pools their resources in an effort to save the three gray whales, but the experience leaves each of them unexpectedly changed. Based on a true story from 1988, the film is a masterful blend of pure entertainment and a sometimes almost documentary style that manages to be quite appealing to both children and adults. The references to '80s culture and politics are spot-on and will inspire more than a few smirks and snickers from adult audience members, and the environmental message of the film is heartening to all ages. But perhaps the most powerful thing about the film is its honest look at what motivates people and how, in America, even the most diametrically opposed factions can occasionally join forces to achieve a common good. (Ages 7 and older) --Tami Horiuchi
Drew Barrymore and John Krasinski star in this incredible rescue adventure - the amazing true story that inspired the world and captured the hearts of millions. When a family of whales is trapped by rapidly forming ice in the Arctic Circle, a small-town reporter (Krasinski) and an animal-loving volunteer (Barrymore) rally an unlikely coalition of Alaskan natives, oil tycoons and the Russian and American military to set aside their differences and free the whales before it's too late. Kristen Bell, Dermot Mulroney and Ted Danson costar in this charming feel-good movie that the whole family can enjoy!

Babies

The babies in Babies are four newborns, photographed in their natural habitat in distinctly different parts of the world. Hattie is in San Francisco, Mari's in Tokyo, Baryarjargal lives out in the Mongolian steppes, and Ponijao is born amid the simple straw huts of Namibia. In the course of less than 80 minutes, we're going to follow this quartet through their first year of life, a chronicle that director Thomas Balmes and producer Alain Chabat have likened to a nature documentary that happens to focus on humans. We can cut to the chase here and say that above and beyond any sociological weight this project might possess, this film's main method can be summed up in the words of David Byrne and Talking Heads from the song "Stay Up Late": "See him drink / From a bottle / See him eat / From a plate / Cute cute / As a button /Don't you want to make him stay up late." In short, babies are cute, babies are funny, and a camera focused on a baby is going to catch the sudden mood shifts and clunky crawling and all the other ingredients of home movies. Along the way, we may pause to notice the cultural differences between the locales, as the American baby seems elaborately nurtured (maybe baby yoga classes could wait a year?) and the African baby views a world just as full of wonder and newness as anywhere else, despite the material poverty of the locale. The Namibia and Mongolia sequences are certainly more arresting than the two urban sections, because their backdrops are so dramatically unusual to most Western eyes. If those differences are colorful, the movie nevertheless suggests that babies are more alike in their development than they are different. Is this enough to qualify as a movie? Well, even if Babies really is little more than a collection of sure-fire infant cuteness, it'll probably be enough for its target audience. --Robert Horton
What's more adorable than a baby? How about four? Follow the development of four beautiful infant children in this charming French documentary, which eschews dialogue and narration for pure visual delights as newborns from Namibia, Mongolia, Tokyo, and San Francisco are exposed to the surprising (and often funny) wonders of their new worlds--learning and growing over the course of a year with the help and attention of their families. 79 min. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital 5.1; Subtitles: English (SDH); featurettes.

Everybody Loves a Winnerâ¦or Do They?
When I first decided to stop joining the coffee break crowd at work while they all complained about how bad business was, and instead made up my mind to set some strong goals and get on with accomplishing them, it didn’t go over very well. I was referred to as a snob, a big shot, a show off. I remember the words, “Who does he think he is?†being muttered under some co-workers’ breath as I passed by.
Sadly, few people will stand and cheer when you determine to have a positive attitude. Why? Unfortunately, about 80% of the people you meet are stuck in a negative mind-set.
Everywhere you go, you are literally swimming in a culture of negative thinking. In fact, if you’re a positive person, you are probably considered suspect, or at the very least, a bit strange!
Â
Where does a negative attitude come from, and what does it cause?
Â
Negative attitudes are insidious and usually begin very early in life as our self-image and understanding of life is formed through the words and actions of our family. Later, negative feedback can continue through our peers, neighborhood associations, and co-workers, not to mention the drum beat of bad news we hear day after day via newspapers and television.
Â
Negative thinking is a powerful raw force that sets on fire any possible good in your life. It colors everything you think about, say, and experience. It’s a depressive “gray lens†through which you view a distorted life picture.
Â
A negative attitude will blind you to new opportunities because you see only roadblocks and obstacles. It focuses your attention on your weaknesses rather than your strengths and convinces you the deck of life is stacked in everyone’s favor but yours. You’ll develop a critical judgmental attitude toward others. You actually become immune to good news!
Â
What happens when you have a positive attitude?
Â
In contrast, a habit of positive thinking has an incredibly positive effect on how your mind works. It ignites a creative spark that shows you new and innovative ways to reach your goals. It shuts out distractions that would draw you off course. It helps you identify a purpose for life and fills you with enthusiasm and the joy of living.
Â
When you have a positive mind-set, you believe the glass is half full, not half empty. You see possibility where others see only problems. You see the good in others, believe for the best, press on when others have given up, experience increased energy for your goals, and sleep well at night knowing you’ve given your best effort. In other words, having a positive attitude makes life worth living!
Â
Sign me up! I’m ready for a positive mind-set.
Â
Believe it or not, positive-thinking people are only different in one way from negative thinkers: They made a CHOICE! They decided to be positive. The truth is that no matter what caused you to form a negative attitude, you don’t have to keep it. You have all the power necessary to make the change. One of the greatest gifts our Creator blessed us with is the ability to choose.
Â
Though making the decision to have a positive mind set is a very important first step, you will have to take some other very pro-active steps to achieve your ultimate goal. You will literally have to begin to re-program yourself with new positive thoughts and images.
Â
I suggest you begin by writing out some very positive affirmations for yourself and then say them aloud each day. Remember that for every action (or thought), there is an equal or opposite reaction. If you are fearful, write an affirmation that states you are full of courage; if you feel helpless, your affirmation should be about competency.
Â
Encourage your mind with CD’s and inspirational books; surround yourself with new friends that are on the same positive journey and allow them to encourage you. Practice, practice, and practice some more by cultivating a positive mindset in everything you think, do, and say. In time, old negative thought patterns WILL be replaced with fresh, positive new ones!
Â
It’s worth the effort!
Â
No other habit can exert more power than the habit of positive thinking; everything you desire to accomplish in life depends on it. Your future is decided only by what you believe you can do and have. You literally attract what you think about. Why not make it something wonderful!
