Les Miserables: The 10th Anniversary Dream Cast in Concert at London's Royal Albert Hall
List Price: $34.98
Sale Price: $24.93

The 10th anniversary concert video of the international musical sensation Les Misérables might be the best thing to appease fans until a full-fledged movie comes along. Or it might be even better, as feature films are often subject to extramusical casting considerations and this 1995 dream cast is superb. Reprising their roles from the original London company are Colm Wilkinson (Valjean), Michael Ball (Marius), and Alun Armstrong (Thenardier). From Broadway come Judy Kuhn (Cosette), Lea Salonga (Eponine), and Michael Maguire (Enjolras); from a later London production comes Ruthie Henshall (Fantine); and from Australia comes Philip Quast (Javert). Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg's score vividly captures the passion of Victor Hugo's epic tale of post-Revolutionary France, combining tear-jerking ballads ("I Dreamed a Dream," "Bring Him Home") and rousing anthems ("Do You Hear the People Sing"). The format of this concert is closer to that of a dramatic cantata rather than a fully staged production; the singers stand at their microphone stands with an orchestra and chorus behind them, but they do wear costumes and participate in some movement. At certain points such as the climax of the barricade scene, the video switches to action from a stage production. The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra sounds great, and it can be thrilling when 200 choristers (dressed in logo T-shirts) rise to their feet for a full-company number such as "One Day More." Also, subtitles provide date and scene information and help move the story along. The 147-minute video contains footage not seen when Les Mis was a PBS pledge-drive staple, most notably the encore in which a progression of 17 actors who have played Valjean around the world share "Do You Hear the People Sing?" Each sings a line in his native language, a testament to the enduring power of this show to audiences everywhere. --David Horiuchi DVD features The 2008 two-disc edition presents the concert on a single-sided disc (the original DVD split the concert over two sides) with optional English subtitles. It's also in anamorphic widescreen (1.78:1 aspect ratio) comparied to the original's 1.33 full-screen. The second disc has Stage by Stage: Les Miserables, the hourlong documentary from 1988. Unfortunately the sound is only Dolby Digital 2.0. Early editions of the DVD had an odd omission (compared to the earlier Sony DVD)--the first 10 seconds of Gavroche's "Little People" were missing ("Good evening, dear inspector, lovely evening, my dear...")--that has now been corrected. --David Horiuchi
To mark the 10th anniversary of the award-winning musical, an all-star array of "Les Miz" cast members from productions around the world took the stage at London's Royal Albert Hall, joined by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, to perform the songs in concert. Colm Wilkinson, Judy Kuhn, Philip Quast, Lea Salonga, and Ruthie Henshall head the cast; songs include "I Dreamed a Dream," "One Day More!," "On My Own" and a special encore of "Do You Hear the People Sing?," performed by 17 Jean Valjeans in their native languages. 148 min. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital stereo; "making of" documentary; interviews. Two-disc set.

Andrew Lloyd Webber - The Royal Albert Hall Celebration
List Price: $19.98

In 1998 a concert at the Royal Albert Hall celebrated Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber's 50th birthday and featured more than two hours of hits from a body of work spanning almost three decades. In this keepsake of a memorable night, star after star steps on to a massive, Eurovision-style set to revisit golden moments in their long association with Britain's most successful composer of musicals. Elaine Paige in big frocks and an even bigger voice delivers "Don't Cry for Me, Argentina" and "Memory" with her usual power; Michael Ball and Donny Osmond stretch the last vestiges of boyish charm to the very limits but still sound great; and Boyzone gets the youth vote. Then there are Kiri Te Kanawa, Bonnie Tyler, Tina Arena, and, of course, another encore for brother Julian Lloyd Webber and those Variations on the cello. But the stars are Sir Andrew's ex-wife Sarah Brightman in an outstanding selection from The Phantom of the Opera (probably his best work), Antonio Banderas (who really can sing), and Glenn Close, a stupendous, moving Norma Desmond in songs from Sunset Boulevard. All in all, a deserved celebration for someone who has given so many people a great deal of pleasure, and a treat for musicals fans of all ages. --Piers Ford
The Royal Albert Hall in London comes alive to the passionate melodies and songs from the shows of Andrew Lloyd Webber. Enjoy the magic of this night of a thousand stars. Directed by: David Mallet

Cats: The Musical (Commemorative Edition)

Wake up that sleeping kitty, because the beloved Broadway musical is on home video! Andrew Lloyd Webber's Tony-winning adaptation of T.S. Eliot's "Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats" follows a band of strutting, singing felines who turn their junkyard home into a dazzling stage for such memorable tunes as "Jellicle Cats," "Memory" and more. Recorded live at London's Adelphi Theatre, the stunning stage production stars Ken Page, Elaine Paige and John Mills. 121 min. Widescreen; Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital 5.1, Dolby Digital Surround; "making of" featurette.
This pop-cultural phenomenon has been performed on stage for more than 50 million patrons in 26 countries for almost 18 years, churning more than $2 billion in ticket sales. Now that Cats has finally made it to the small screen, attention must be paid not just by fans of this critic-proof show, but also by those entertainment mavens who have somehow avoided Cats until now. The video version has been restaged but, alas, not really reconceived for its new medium. The video cast, assembled from London, Amsterdam, and New York productions, is competent. Ken Page as Old Deuteronomy, Jacob Brent as Mr. Mistoffelees, and Elaine Paige--the original London Grizabella, the Glamour Cat well past her prime--are a great deal more than that. Paige has toned down her theatrical belting of her big number, "Memory," and allowed the faded ruin of her character's soul to prevail in close-up. For all the "covers" of her signature song, Paige's version remains definitive. The video is, by definition, more intimate, not always a good thing: costumes are even more Halloweeny in garish close-up, the cats less cuddly without that all-important interaction, the stage's appropriately midnight lighting transmuted to a Las Vegas neon. And the chorus of cats in production numbers is even clunkier and more amorphous in two- and three-shots. The one complete newcomer to the cast is the 90-year-old icon among English actors John Mills, a delight as Gus the Theatrical Cat. Sir John and his character show the youngsters how it's done in close-up, largely behind the eyes, abetted by a heart-tugging delivery of his one song. Yet virtually all of the songs are lip-synched, further robbing the video Cats of its onstage seeming spontaneity. It's clearer than ever that Lloyd Webber's music is mostly twaddle, with the important exception of "Memory," which instantly and rightly became one of the genuine theater standards not dependent on context, in the vein of Stephen Sondheim's "Send in the Clowns." On the plus side, most of the Cats characters and lyrics, from T.S. Eliot's 14-poem Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats, are far better defined and understood from the video version. --Robert Windeler

Here are some more information for Elaine Paige:

The story of Susan Boyle would have to be the most inspirational that I have heard about in a long long time. When she walked out on to the stage in front of Simon Cowell on the talent search chow 'Britain's Got Talent', well you'd have to think that before she even sung her first note, it was all over for her. Wouldn't you hate to be the girl in the audience that was caught on camera with that unforgiving scowl on her face. Susan sure made her eat her words.
Susan had a dream. After losing her mother in 2007, she became quite lonely and depressed. Her mother and friends had encouraged her to go on 'Britain's Got Talent' after a succession of other competitions and recordings, and as a tribute to her mother Susan plucked up the courage and, well the rest is musical history. To be able to show the courage to appear on 'Britain's Got Talent' in front of 10 million people on national T.V, well that would have to be the dream of a million life times.
When asked what her goal in singing was she said she wanted to sing like Elaine Paige (not a bad choice!). The faces on some of the people in that room were memorable. So memorable that now it would be the biggest "don't judge a book by it's cover" statement in history.
Susan sang "I Dreamed A Dream" a song from the musical "Les Miserable" and the whole world seemed to stop. The tears flowed, and the judges and the majority of the audience stood up and applauded. The expression on Simon Cowle's face when his eye brows popped up in amazement, was to die for. He was definitely blown away.
After a little stint in hospital after the competition from exhaustion, Susan has gone on to bigger musical projects and this album is her first, and I would think, definitely not her last. After having a quick listen to the collection of songs, I hear a certain comfort in her voice, especially when she sings songs like "How Great Thou Art"and her beautiful rendition of "wild Horses". There seems to be a certain relaxing tone in her voice which I could listen to all day. You know how sometimes you can hear a certain amount of songs from the one singer and after a while it kind of grinds on you. I didn't find that with Susan's voice at all.
Susan didn't win 'Britain's Got Talent', she came in second place, but now has the number one selling CD on Amazon.com and it's selling like hot cakes since its release all over the world. An inspirational story, especially for those people that think you have to be young to break into the music industry. Obviously, that is not the case.
Susan Boyle's CD 'I Dreamed A Dream' is currently the number one selling albumon Amazon.com. and it has been for the past 93 days or so. It should stay up there right up to Christmas too and beyond.
Hi, my name is Lea Reyes and I've worked in the music industry for over 20 years. I have always been the type of person to want to learn everything there is about music and the industry. When it comes to listening to music, I have become very versatile.
I too was blown away with Susan Boyles performance on Britains Got Talent. It certainly made me drop a few little wet ones from my eyes. That's what music does to me, it's a passion and when something special like Susan Boyle comes along, it makes me emotional. What an inspiration for older musicians like me. There's still time for me to go for it again, and follow my dream of sharing my talent and music with others.
Thanks for your interest,
Regards
Lea
Your Home Based Business Success and the Story of Susan Boyle. Anything in Common?
So what could your success in a home business possibly have in common with an innocuous singer named Susan Boyle? A lot; here you go...
In only three days times, and at the time of this writing, video clips of a singing performance by somebody named Susan Boyle - a completely unknown singer - have climbed to over 50 million views on YouTube. The woman has, without question, one of the sweetest, most angelic voices you'd ever hear. But that is only where the story begins.
She stood on the stage during the taping of a show from England called "Britain's Got Talent". She's a frumpy woman with a messy hairdo which will remind you of a bird's nest. Immediately, when you're watching her stand there, just moments before her performance begins, there is only one thought going though your mind; you cannot help but think that she has been put on the stage for shock value.
You know how these "talent" shows operate. It's obligatory that they include people in the lineup that entertain, not so much for their talent, but rather for their lack thereof. You couldn't help but think Susan Boyle was on the show for that reason.
She seemed to have everything going against her. Her age; she is 47. If she had any talent, why hadn't she already been discovered? Who did she want to be as successful as? Her answer: Elaine Paige - a woman know as "The First Lady of British Musical Theatre". The crowd is cackling and making fun of her and the judges seem ready to try and get her off the stage sooner rather than later.
She had chosen to perform a song entitled "I Dreamed A Dream" from the play Les Miserables. A very difficult song to sing indeed. The music is cued; there she stands with microphone in hand. She opens her mouth to let out the first note of her performance; by the eighth note the crowd is cheering wildly and the judges are in shock. By the time she is finished singing the entire song, you've realized a star has just been born.
So what does the performance of Susan Boyle have to do with you building your successful home based Network Marketing business? Dig a little and you can find numerous similarities.
First and foremost, don't ever let anyone tell you can't do it. "Can't" is word that subjugates losers and you are no loser. Don't ever quit on yourself - you can do anything you put your mind to.
Secondly, It's never too late to build a successful MLM business. There is no time frame on your success. Just as it made no difference to Susan Boyle that she is in her late 40's, neither should it matter to you how old you are. It is never too late start and build your successful home business.
Thirdly, everything Susan Boyle had done in her life culminated into her moment on that stage. Singing in her church's choir, singing around the house and at all other times when she was alone and let lyrics flow from her lungs - it all lead up to that moment. And this I think is the biggest lesson of all.
Your life is a sum total of your past. You will experience times of frustration where you feel as though you're putting effort into building your business but there simply are no meaningful results to show for it. But you mustn't give up. The day will come for you, as it had for Susan Boyle, where you will experience that break through. That time will only come provided you pursue it with passion and persistence and a refusal to quit.
Change and success can come in an instant. Your turn around from struggling entrepreneur to successful Network Marketer can arrive in a flash. And it will arrive if, and only if, you refuse to quit.
Do you understand? There really is no such thing as overnight success. What seems like overnight success has always been preceded by preparation. Sometimes years and years of preparation. And your preparation is what will enable you to also become an "overnight success".
Finally, if you have not yet seen video clips of Susan Boyle's performance, drop what you're doing and go search them out on YouTube. You will be absolutely amazed at what you see and you're sure to draw some inspiration from it too just as I have.

Poll: Who here thinks Elaine Paige is jealous of Susan Boyle?
I do.... http://new.uk.music.yahoo.com/blogs/snapcrackleandpop/40436/idol-slams-boyle/
Well there's no doubting that Elaine was struggling to keep up with Susan when they sang together. I think Elaine is probably past it now and is trying to be controversial to save a flagging career so yes, you could say there is jealousy there.
