Eddie Cantor Story [VHS] Eddie Cantor Story [VHS]
List Price: $19.98
Sale Price: $24.97

A big slice of show-biz cheese, The Eddie Cantor Story follows the Broadway legend from childhood, when he narrowly escaped delinquency, through his youth in vaudeville to his years of success as the star of Florenz Ziegfeld's smash revues. Impersonated with eye-rolling hamminess by Keefe Brasselle (who hosted a brief-lived variety show in the 1960s), Cantor is an archetypal go-getter, a relentless workaholic who sacrificed his family life to sing Tin Pan Alley classics like "Makin' Whoopee" before an adoring crowd. The cliches fly fast and furious; the best bit is when a venomous actress (film noir queen Marie Windsor, The Killing, The Narrow Margin), sick of Cantor upstaging her, tries to sabotage Cantor by pretending to arrange an audition for him. Along the way are overdone imitations of Jimmy Durante and Will Rogers telling Cantor how great he is. Contemporary audiences are apt to be startled by the cheerful performances in blackface, which the movie blithely embraces as good-natured fun. This ends up being The Eddie Cantor Story's most intriguing aspect, though more for sociological interest than entertainment value. --Bret Fetzer

Musical biopic featuring the vocals of Cantor himself during the musical numbers. Cantors greatest hits are featured, including Ida, Sweet As Apple Cider, If You Knew Susie, Potatos are Cheaper, Margie, and Ichr(39)d Like to Spend Each Sunda With you. Jac

Texas Chainsaw Massacre: A Family Portrait [VHS] Texas Chainsaw Massacre: A Family Portrait [VHS]

Director Tobe Hooper and screenwriter Kim Henkel are nowhere to be found in Brad Shellady's 1988 documentary on the notorious 1974 cult film of Texas cannibalism, perverted patriarchy, and other family values. Shellady's investigation is founded almost exclusively on interviews with actors who make up the cannibal family: Gunnar Hansen (Leatherface), Edwin Neal (the hitchhiker), Jim Siedow (the cook), John Dugan (Grandfather), interspersed with film clips and a few outtakes. The result is a bare-bones production largely dedicated to production stories, with little attempt to explore the primal forces the churn through the picture or examine the cult that sprung out of the film, and no interest in addressing the black-humored 1986 sequel starring Dennis Hopper. Fans of the film will appreciate the behind-the-scenes anecdotes, but most viewers will have a hard time working through the interviews, which seem to drone on and on. Without input from the creators, this is little more than a fan's salute to a film he loves. The DVD is advertised as "digitally remastered and remixed," which is likely true, but the dull shot-on-video interviews and grainy film clips don't look appreciably better in the digital format and sound is soft and mushy. Also included are original trailers and actor bios. --Sean Axmaker

Broadway History

Broadway as an icon

Broadway is the street in new york which has come to symbolize live theater entertainment and musicals across the world. Today the area, known to visitors and theater-goers, stretches from W.41st Street, where the Netherlander Theater is found, up to W. 53rd Street's Broadway Theater. Only four theaters are located physically on Broadway, the Marquis at 46th Street, the Palace at 47th Street, the Winter Garden at fiftieth Street and the Broadway at 53rd. All the other legitimate houses are located west or east of this 12 block stretch.

Broadway Stars.

By the 1830's America was exporting stars to Europe. The first notable American actor to make a successful tour was Edwin Forrest, who at 19, had played Iago to Edmond Kean's Othello. Forrest's 2nd tour of the British Isles, in the following decade didn't fare also. He was heckled off the stage. Though the interruption of his tour was a private feud with a Brit actor, its results were well made public in the american Press and his return to the american stage was received with populist fervor. This'personal feud' became an international situation and demonstration of class struggle in 1849, when the UK actor in question was booked to perform at the Astor Place Opera House in the Big Apple. A riot ensued on the night of May tenth which was put down with troops and cannon.

Broadways first marquis.

In 1891, the 1st electrical marquis was lit on Broadway. The theater was on Madison Square at the intersection of Broadway and 5th Avenue at W. 23rd Street. The Flatiron Building now occupies the site. By half way thru the following decade, the street blazed with electrical signs as each theater declared its shows and stars in white lights. By the turn of the 20th Century the street had a wholly different look, with as many as sixteen theaters on Broadway itself and many others found on the side streets or other avenues. Broadway was much more than a trifling twelve blocks. It started at 13th Street and wound its way a mile and a half up the Avenue to 45th Street, ending in the center of Long acre Square. This first decade of the century also saw the construction of many theaters, most significantly the New Amsterdam on 42nd Street in 1903, together with four others in that very same year, that are still standing today.

Our Broadway.

the first decade of the twentieth Century was both boring and transformational in the history of our Broadway Musicals. The seeds of that alteration go back to 1882, and the construction of The Madison Square Theater at 24th Street. The Mallory's, who had built the theater, had employed a young actor-manager from San Francisco together with 2 brothers from the lower Eastside to help manage the theater. David Belasco, who had the excellence of appearing on stage with another unknown child, Maude Adams, in San Francisco in 1877, was soon to become a playwright, theater owner and builder. The 2 brothers from the lower Eastside were, of course, Charles and Daniel Frohman. The first sign of the alteration took place when producer Rudolf Aronson made a decision to build a theatre of his very own. At the time, theatres were concentrated between Union Square and 24th Street.
