The Nutcracker / Baryshnikov, Kirkland, Charmoli

The American Ballet Theater version of the Tchaikovsky classic, a 1977 studio rendition directed by Tony Charmoli, has become a holiday perennial on PBS stations and home video. It's a favorite of parents who want to give their kids the gift of culture--and with good reason. There's a loose fairy tale plot to keep dance neophytes interested, and Boris Aronson's eye-candy production design is a series of lavish dioramas. From an imperial-era Russian Christmas party out of Tolstoy, a young girl named Clara (Gelsey Kirkland) is whisked in dreams to an imaginary world populated by the animated creations of the wizard toy maker Drosselmeier (Alexander Minz), who prances on his stick-thin limbs like a Dickens illustration come to life. The main attraction is, of course, Mikhail Baryshnikov, one of the greatest classical dancers of the century, at his absolute peak of athleticism and precision. An opening slow-motion montage diagrams his fabled smoothness of execution, elegant airborne trajectories that have a feather-light perfection. Music lovers who know only "The Nutcracker Suite" will relish the chance to hear this great score all the way through, conducted with lilt and vigor by Kenneth Schermerhorn. --David Chute
The American Ballet Theatre and Mikhail Baryshnikov present this timeless and colorful production of Tchaikovsky's ballet, with prima ballerina Gelsey Kirkland as the young girl whose Christmas Eve dream brings a toy soldier nutcracker to life as a handsome prince (Baryshnikov). 78 min. Standard; Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital 5.1, Dolby Digital stereo.

Les Miserables: The Dream Cast in Concert (The Musical That Swept The World)
Sale Price: $19.00

The 10th anniversary concert video of the international musical sensation Les Mis?rables might be the best thing to appease fans until a full-fledged movie comes along. Or it might be even better, as feature films are often subject to extramusical casting considerations and this 1995 dream cast is superb. Reprising their roles from the original London company are Colm Wilkinson (Valjean), Michael Ball (Marius), and Alun Armstrong (Thenardier). From Broadway come Judy Kuhn (Cosette), Lea Salonga (Eponine), and Michael Maguire (Enjolras); from a later London production comes Ruthie Henshall (Fantine); and from Australia comes Philip Quast (Javert).
Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Sch?nberg's score vividly captures the passion of Victor Hugo's epic tale of pre-Revolutionary France, combining tear-jerking ballads ("I Dreamed a Dream," "Bring Him Home") and rousing anthems ("Do You Hear the People Sing"). The format of this concert is closer to that of a dramatic cantata rather than a fully staged production; the singers stand at their microphone stands with an orchestra and chorus behind them, but they do wear costumes and participate in some movement. At certain points such as the climax of the barricade scene, the video switches to action from a stage production. The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra sounds great, and it can be thrilling when 200 choristers (dressed in logo T-shirts) rise to their feet for a full-company number such as "One Day More." Also, subtitles provide date and scene information and help move the story along.
The 160-minute video contains footage not seen when Les Mis was a PBS pledge-drive staple, most notably the encore in which a progression of 17 actors who have played Valjean around the world share "Do You Hear the People Sing?" Each sings a line in his native language, a testament to the enduring power of this show to audiences everywhere.

Written and narrated by Roland Penrose, this hour-long program on the Spanish artist Joan Miró was produced in 1978 by the BBC. Penrose, who interviews Miró in the artist's studio (Miró speaks in French; there are English subtitles), was his friend for 42 years. Miró's work belongs to the surrealist school and was largely influenced by the horrors of war, including the Spanish Civil War. Born in Barcelona, he deeply felt the oppression of his native Catalonia, and during Franco's regime he had his passport taken away from him. His paintings often began with a mark or a stain, which then led him to paint a person, or a bird, or a star. Titles were chosen for the works afterwards. In Theatre of Dreams, Miró, at the age of 85, works with Spanish actors to produce a piece of experimental theater. An extraordinary aspect of this documentary is watching Miró put paint from a tube directly on his index finger and then onto the canvas. He then sits in a rocking chair and looks carefully at his completed work. Because the artist worked in silence, this documentary has no music. This truly remarkable program does a commendable job at capturing the artist during his lifetime. --Anne Barclay Morgan
Joan Miro: Theatre of Dreams profiles one of the major figures of 20th-century art. Friend of Picasso and Ernst, Miro was one of a few Surrealists whose work survived in the face of new trends. He is shown in this program at age 85, working in his studio and embarking on an entirely new venture--an original stage production with a Spanish theater group.

Rodgers and Hammerstein's Oklahoma! (London Stage Revival)
List Price: $24.98
Sale Price: $12.29

When Mary Rodgers, daughter of the composer Richard Rodgers, was reported as saying she never wanted to see another Oklahoma!, it was her way of paying the highest tribute to Trevor Nunn's production at the Royal National Theatre which was subsequently taken into the studio and filmed. The camera follows the playgoers into the auditorium of the Olivier where in their company we watch the show and applaud the numbers as the real thing. Nunn treats Rodgers and Hammerstein's first collaboration with the utmost seriousness, restoring the full text so that it comes across as a drama indebted to Eugene O'Neill. Although Oklahoma! unfolds at a leisurely pace, it is extraordinary how one is drawn into the drama under Nunn's direction. There's seldom a wish for true locations as the pace picks up and we move into the claustrophobic company of Judd Fry in his riveting encounter with the cowboy Curly. The close-up camera work affords an experience the theatre can't bring and also pays handsome dividends in appreciating Susan Stroman's intricate and lively choreography. Her dancers are a fine team, notably Jimmy Johnston who is outstanding as Will Parker leading the Kansas City ensemble. Hugh Jackman (X-Men) as Curly matches him in vocal prowess and looks, and Shuler Hensley sings the tricky role of Judd Fry very well. It's harder to place Peter Polycarpou's Pedlar, a considerably larger role than in the film version, whose accent strays from London's East End to the plains of Europe. Maureen Lipman, rightly deemed the lynchpin of the musical by Nunn, is a joy to watch as Aunt Eller. Laurey (Josefina Gabrielle) and Ado Annie (Vicki Simon) are good but not special. Aside from an abrupt start to Act Two and the occasional voice off microphone, the production sounds good with a larger orchestra present than in the theatre. An Oklahoma! on an epic scale. --Adrian Edwards
Oklahoma! Where Wolverine comes sweepin' down the plain! Hugh Jackman shines in this revival of the Rodgers and Hammerstein classic from England's Royal National Theatre. Includes sublime performances of "People Will Say We're in Love," "Oh, What a Beautiful Morning," "The Surrey with the Fringe on Top," and more. With Maureen Lipman, Josefina Gabrielle, Shuler Hensley. 180 min. Standard; Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital 5.1.

Dream Theatre Vs. Tool ? (WHY) ?
I'm not what you say an 80s / 90s / 00s music friend , lover or expert (with some exceptions of course even though I'm just 26 years old , yet I'm all 60s and 70s) . Few months ago , I downloaded two albums :
(1) Lateralus (2) Images And Words ..... and I assume that I'm gonna admire the instrumental respect paid by "Tool" and "Dream Theatre" bands members , yet I hear some people hate these bands and others worship them !!!!!
My question is (WHO'S THE BETTER BAND with more talent and less mainstream aspect ???????????)
BQ: If you adore one of them so much , reasonably what do you think of the other ?
Their instrumental performances are very, very different. I listen to Tool solely for entertainment but Dream Theater to allow myself to experience the state of pleasure out of mere talent.
DT's members are among THE best out there, not that Tool's members do not get any recognition but of course, Maynard is mostly preferred for his interesting talent in vocal work and his contribution in two other bands, one very well known.
Dream Theater though, on the other hand have a rather weak vocalist to the listeners, his singing may not be as catchy or as talented IMO but in the overall review of the band, every member is credited on their extreme talent, and productions with other bands and musical instrumental groups.
Maynard is still a great vocalist to me, and even though I choose Dream Theater, I still would rather listen to Maynard's vocals in 3 of my favored bands; Puscifer, Tool and A Perfect Circle than Dream Theater. In conclusion, I believe Maynard is far better than James or Charlie but Dream Theater in all are far more talented than Tool, APC and Puscifer in all.
