Disney's 1959 animated effort was the studio's most ambitious to date, a widescreen spectacle boasting a gorgeous waltz-filled score adapting Tchaikovsky. In the 14th century, the malevolent Maleficent (not dissimilar to the wicked Queen in Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs taunts a king that his infant Aurora will fatally prick her finger on a spinning wheel before sundown on her 16th birthday. This, of course, would deny her a happily-ever-after with her true love. Things almost but not quite turn out that way, thanks to the assistance of some bubbly, bumbling fairies named Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather. It's not really all that much about the title character--how interesting can someone in the middle of a long nap be, anyway? Instead, those fairies carry the day, as well as, of course, good Prince Phillip, whose battle with the malevolent Maleficent in the guise of a dragon has been co-opted by any number of animated films since. See it in its original glory here. And Malificent's castle, filled with warthogs and demonic imps in a macabre dance celebrating their evil ways, manages a certain creepy grandeur. --David Kronke On the Blu-raySleeping Beauty was the last and most lavish of Walt Disney's animated fairy tales. He told the artists not to hurry and to give him "a moving illustration": The film required almost four and one-half years and one million finished drawings. Instead of the 19th century storybook illustrations that had influenced the look of Snow White and Pinocchio, the artists adapted the flattened perspective and jewel-like colors of 15th century French illuminated manuscripts. The results remain unmatched for sheer visual opulence. However, Sleeping Beauty suffers from a weak story: the vision of an ageless princess slumbering in a vine-shrouded tower was replaced with elements of Snow White and a boy-meets-girl musical. The evil Maleficent and the three Good Fairies (Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather) dominate the film, rather than Princess Aurora and Prince Philip. Sleeping Beauty was originally released in 70mm, and the Blu-ray edition restores the film to its original splendor. (Many earlier releases trimmed the wide-screen images and/or muted the glowing palatte.) The Bonus DVD looks good on a flat screen monitor, but it pales in comparison to the richness of the Blu-ray. In addition to the commentaries and a making-of documentary, the set includes myriad extras that vary widely in quality. Nostalgia buffs will enjoy the recreation of the old Sleeping Beauty's Castle attraction in Disneyland, and the TV program "Four Artists Paint One Tree" provides a welcome showcase for key talents from the film. But the CG animation of the dragon and the voice imitations of the Good Fairies fail to capture the magic of the originals in the "Dragon Encounter"; the "Maleficent's Challenge Game"--a hi-tech Twenty Questions--sounds only vaguely like the redoubtable sorceress. The BD-Live features require an awful lot of bother: after wading through (or ignoring) 130 screens of legalese, participants must enter their Social Security number or other personal information in the drawn-out sign-on process. Once that's finally done, viewers can send special messages to pop up during the film, chat online with others who are watching, and view it in synch with others. The question is whether or not you want to. (Rated G: violence) --Charles Solomon Stills from Sleeping Beauty (Click for larger image)

A beautiful princess born in a faraway kingdom is destined by a terrible curse to prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel and fall into a deep sleep which can only be awakened by true love's first kiss. Though the titular princess is on par with the rest of Disney's essential heroines, most of the fun arises from the trio of charming fairies entrusted with her care: Flora, Fauna, and Meriweather. Meanwhile the evil Malificent may just be Disney's most chilling villainess. This classic makes wondrous use of Tchaikovsky's same-titled ballet score, which earned SLEEPING BEAUTY an Academy Award nomination for Best Scoring of a Musical Picture.

When a mail-order apprentice witch (Angela Lansbury) is saddled with three sibling refugees from London during World War II, the outlook is grim. But the kids soon discover her secret and sign on for adventure in the name of England. With the aid of a magical bed, they track down her fraudulent headmaster (David Tomlinson) to find the spell that will aid the Allies. Fascinated that she has actually achieved results with his lessons, he joins forces. The quintet does battle with corrupt booksellers, animated-lion royalty, and, eventually, invading Germans. Songs include Lansbury's Oscar-nominated "The Age of Not Believing." This film is often compared to director Robert Stevenson's earlier effort, Mary Poppins, and for good reason. In addition to Tomlinson, the movies share a fondness for magic at the hands of a good woman, light romance with an understanding male, and wide-eyed children. Stevenson also graces both films with interaction between humans and animated animals. Disney is wise to play up that aspect on its box this time around as both the underwater ball and the subsequent island soccer match are the most visually interesting and appealing parts of the film. Adults may find the 1971-vintage mixing of actors and animation a bit creaky, but kids used to a variety of animation quality will find the action a hoot. Ages 4 and up. The movie has been recut several times but was restored to the original length of 139 minutes for its 30th anniversary in 2001. --Kimberly Heinrichs

Bruce Lee - Master Collection [VHS] Bruce Lee - Master Collection [VHS]
List Price: $29.98
Sale Price: $4.68

Sinewy, sleek, and oozing charisma, Bruce Lee brought sex appeal to the martial arts genre, dominating even the most cliché-riddled adventures with his mix of good-humored geniality and focused intensity. His first film, the low-budget Hong Kong adventure Fists of Fury (as it was titled in the U.S.), is exactly that: a raw, rough-edged revenge drama of a country boy who uncovers a heroin-smuggling ring. Yet the film comes alive when Lee pounces into action, his wiry, well-muscled frame erupting in lightning moves. His follow-up, The Chinese Connection, keeps the revenge theme going for a tale of a kung fu student who avenges his teacher's death at the hands of a Japanese rival. The international success of both films enabled the increasingly ambitious Lee to write and direct his own feature, Return of the Dragon, a more-comic tale of a Chinese country boy who travels to Rome to help out cousins under the thumb of local mobsters. Though filled with excellent martial arts bouts, all choreographed by Lee, the highlight is a death match between Lee and karate champion Chuck Norris in the Roman Colosseum. Lee died before completing his last feature, Game of Death, and a rather unconvincing double runs around much of the film between footage of the real Lee, but the climax features an impressive bout with basketball star and Lee student Kareem Abdul-Jabar. Though a cut above most martial arts movies of the period, these are no masterpieces, but then who watches a Bruce Lee film for the story? In these films, plot is simply there for the scenes between Lee's amazing fight sequences. The documentary Bruce Lee: The Legend completes the collection. --Sean Axmaker

From the moment that Prince Eric's ship emerged from the fog in the opening credits it was apparent that Disney had somehow, suddenly recaptured that "magic" that had been dormant for thirty years. In the tale of a headstrong young mermaid who yearns to "spend a day, warm on the sand," Ariel trades her voice to Ursula, the Sea Witch (classically voiced by Pat Carroll), for a pair of legs. Ariel can only succeed if she receives true love's kiss in a few day's time and she needs all the help she can from a singing crab named Sebastian, a loudmouth seagull, and a flounder. The lyrics and music by Howard Ashman and Alan Menken are top form: witty and relevant, and they advance the story (go on, hum a few bars of "Under the Sea"). Mermaid put animation back on the studio's "to do" list and was responsible for ushering Beauty and the Beast to theaters. A modern Disney classic. --Keith Simanton

List Price: $40.99

This stylish, American adaptation of Stieg Larsson's novel chronicles the unusual partnership of disgraced journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Daniel Craig) and tattooed computer whiz Lisbeth Salander (Rooney Mara). Working together to uncover the truth behind the disappearance of a wealthy businessman's niece nearly 40 years earlier, they find themselves thrust into a dangerous web of secrecy and deception. With Christopher Plummer, Stellan Skarsgard, Robin Wright; David Fincher directs. 158 min. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital 5.1, French Dolby Digital Surround stereo; Subtitles: English (SDH), Arabic, French, Hebrew, Hindi; audio commentary; featurettes; theatrical trailers; TV spots; bonus UltraViolet digital copy. Also includes a DVD version of the film. Three-disc set.

A murder mystery rife with suspense, scandal, sexual abuse, and some supremely intriguing characters, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is an excellently crafted film adaptation of Stieg Larsson's equally fascinating book of the same name. Larsson's book was also the basis of a 2009 Swedish film (also with the same title), and while the Swedish film was good, this American version is far superior, thanks to fantastic cinematography and livelier pacing that results in a constant, electric tension that drives every second of the movie. The breathtaking footage of a snowy, remote island in Sweden thoroughly exudes bitter cold, and the attention to the smallest details, like the whistling of the wind through a door left ajar, makes the hairs on the back of viewers' necks absolutely prickle. Like the book, the film is long (158 minutes), there's an abundance of dialogue that is never awkward and always efficient, and there are plenty of false endings. The suspense and the intricacy of the mystery are stellar, and even viewers who know the story well will find themselves sucked into the riddle being investigated by journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Daniel Craig). The casting is great, as are the performances of all the key actors, but by far the best thing about this film is Rooney Mara, who is utterly believable as the incredibly strong, extremely disturbed Lisbeth Salander, Blomkvist's unlikely assistant. Mara's performance is chillingly real and completely riveting. Yorick van Wageningen is perfectly despicable as Nils Bjurman (though his scene with Salander is sure to prove highly disturbing to some viewers), Christopher Plummer is an effective Henrik Vanger, and Stellen Skarsgård is eerily frightening as Martin Vanger. Viewers can only hope that director David Fincher, screenplay writer Steven Zaillian, and actors Craig and Mara will continue their collaboration to produce films based on the final two books of Larsson's Millennium trilogy. --Tami Horiuchi

The Evil Dragon Satan

A gigantic dragon loomed within the clouds of the darkened sky. It's breath exhaled sparking burning rays of fire into the ominous night. The sky grew fierce and lightning bolts of flame reached out and touched one man and then another, until millions of people were connected helplessly to the terrifying sight of imminent destruction.

Millions of people were being tortured by the burning power of torment that is forced upon all persons who don't understand the truth. These are the people who refuse to listen to the message of Jesus Christ, the Savior of mankind.

In their blindness, I heard them shout in terrifying pleads for God to leave them alone. They felt the pain of war, famine and plague, but they wouldn't listen. They held onto the world values and refused to apply the Bible to their lives.

Revelations 12: 7-9, "Then war broke out in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, who fought back with his angels; but the dragon was defeated, and he and his angels were not allowed to stay in heaven any longer. The huge dragon was thrown out-that ancient serpent, named the Devil, or Satan, that deceived the whole world. He was thrown down to earth, and all his angels with him."

Take heed people, Satan is the god of this world and his desire is to sleigh all people. He doesn't want them to come to God. He doesn't want the people to find their Savior and live for an eternity.

Millions of people were touched by the fiery flames of death. Death that came in the form of pestilence, war, famine, natural disasters and evil of all kinds that destroy all people who are simple minded and without knowledge. All people who refuse to understand that they are in a great life battle. A life game of good versus' evil.

They wouldn't listen to those who spoke to them about God and love. They refused to bow their knees to Jesus, the King of kings. They loved their lives so much that they didn't need a Savior. All they needed was the strength of men.

Signs of war emerged sounding trumpets that caused all people to clasp their ears to quiet the deafening noise of battle. The dragon was so fierce that he scorched the earth with all forms of pain and agony.

Revelations 12: 10-12, "Then I heard a loud voice in heaven saying, 'Now God's salvation has come! Now his Messiah has shown his authority! For the one who stood before our God and accused our brothers day and night has been thrown out of heaven. Our brothers won the victory over him by the blood of the Lamb and by the truth which they proclaimed; and they were willing to give up their lives and die. And so be glad, you heavens, and all you that live there! But how terrible for the earth and the sea! For the Devil has come down to you, and he is filled with rage, because he knows that he has only a little time left."

Beware! Beware! The dragon as been given permission to hunt down all those who are stupid because they refuse to listen to the words of God. Beware! Beware all people of the world the time is near and the devils teeth are dripping with human blood.

The people of the world loved their lives so much that they failed to see that the world was about to end. They were like blind men leading blind men. They were like soldiers that were being slaughtered by an unseen enemy in a great world war.

Revelation 13: 9&10, "Listen, then, if you have ears! Whoever is meant to be captured will surely be captured; whoever is meant to be killed by the sword will surely be killed by the sword. This calls for endurance and faith on the part of God's people."

The devil licked his evil lips as he watched the people of the world go about taking care of themselves without knowing that he was waiting to devour them like lambs about to be slaughtered. Satan watched and set traps to lure the people into committing all forms of sin.

People were going about building new houses unaware of the impending disasters. They were going back and forth to work gathering up money and spending it on their pleasures. They believed they were in control of their lives, they didn't need Jesus Christ as their Savior.

Revelation 13: 16&18, "The beast forced all the people, small and great, rich and poor, slave and free, to have a mark placed on their right hands or on their foreheads. No one could buy or sell unless he had this mark, that is the beast's name or the number that stands for the name.
This calls for wisdom. Whoever is intelligent can figure out the meaning of the number of the beast, because the number stands for a man's name. Its number is 666."

I shuttered as each person willingly accepted Satan's number. They believed in countries and kingdoms being ruled by governments and societies led by men. They believed in man's ability to rule justly and without hesitation they answered the call to be counted and collected in the great inventory of Satan's method on how to play the great game of life.

They loved immorality, war, jealousy and lying to each other. They idolized their homes and their luxury vehicles. They took advantage of good people who did what was right so they could fill their homes with riches.

They refused to believe in Jesus as their Savior. They didn't need a God of love and wisdom. They weren't interested in caring about other people. All they needed was the intellect of men to rule the world.

They were unaware of how much power their submission gave to the dragon. They didn't understand that now everything they bought could now be recorded and measured and given to those who are financially smart. Wealth that gives power to men who then control the economics of the world. Greed that fills the hearts of men and makes them bow their knees to Satan's way of living life. Men whose only desire is to live their lives for themselves.

All people of the world beware your simple way of thinking has given power to Satan. The devil, the great dragon, uses deception to keep the people of the earth unable to see the truth about how evil their lives have become.

Jesus Christ is your only hope. Follow Him and you will be saved from the destructive powers of Satan. Love others, do good to them and give money to help the poor.

Revelations 14:6&7, "Then I saw another angel flying high in the air, with an eternal message of Good News to announce to the peoples of the earth, to every race, tribe, language, and nation. He said in a loud voice, 'Honor God and praise his greatness! For the time has come for him to judge mankind. Worship him who made heaven, earth, sea, and the springs of water.'"

The teachings of Christ flooded the countries, cities and towns. People everywhere were listening because the world had become so bad.

The gas prices were so high they couldn't put gas in their cars to go to work. Food prices were skyrocketing forcing people to steal from each other in order to feed their families. Big companies were firing their employees and hiring cheaper labor. Banks were foreclosing and credit cards were charging so much interest that the people were being forced into bankruptcy.

A voice sounded from the gloom that was covering the entire earth. Hold to Jesus Christ's teachings. Read the word of God and wisdom will put your feet back on solid ground. Do good to each other and obey God's words. Trust Him with your lives and you will no longer be deceived by Satan's lies.

Mark 12: 30&31, "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. The second most important commandment is this: 'Love your neighbor as you love yourself.' There is no other commandment more important than these two."

I heard a loud scream of defeat come from the dragons mouth. The end of all things had come! The breath of fire died, stopping him from going out and deceiving the people of the earth any more.

Revelation 20: 1-3a, "Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, holding in his hand the key of the abyss and a heavy chain. He seized the dragon, that ancient serpent-that is, the Devil, or Satan-and chained him up for a thousand years. The angel threw him into the abyss, locked it, and sealed it, so that he could not deceive the nations any more until the thousand years were over."

Satan's evil deeds were ended. God's words of hope and love flooded the earth. People bowed their knees to Jesus Christ because he fought the dragon and won the battle for truth and love.

God's Christian soldiers listened to the voice of the Holy Spirit and they recognized that they were in a battle of good versus evil. They stood their ground and did good. They fought battles with cancer, diseases of all kinds, natural disasters, homelessness, injustice and won the game of life for Jesus Christ. Their good deeds defeated the evil dragon, Satan!

What is the best spyro the dragon game?

Mine is Year of the Dragon for the PS1 followed by Gateway to Glimmer for the PS1

I loved the second Spyro: Ripto's Rage

I just got done beating Spyro: Year of the Dragon 117%. It was an awesome game.

The first 3 Spyro's were just great. They had a great storyline, great characters, and had cool music.

Insomniac selling the rights to spyro was the stupidest thing they could have done. Now THX has turned Spyro into a ugly, killing machine.

I want to go back to catching dragons/orbs/eggs and collecting gems.
