Marketers target the pain and pleasure of different psychographic groups to make their sale. These psychographic groups help us understand the power of programming.  Each group has its own pain and pleasure triggers.  The six main psychographic groups which are targeted in TV, Internet and Print ads are: The Struggler, The Emulator, The Explorer, The Socially Conscious, The Belonger and The Achiever.

The strategy in addressing each of these segments is to either get them to move away from pain or to entice them towards pleasure. This article is going to take a closer look at The Explorer psychographic. Some of the sources of pleasure for the Explorer are adventure, hedonism, breaking rules, discovery, cynicism, experimenting, and change.  Sources of pain for the Explorer are routine, rules, sacrifice, convention, blind acceptance, and tradition.

The Explorer is a relatively new segment of society. Many feel these are the children of parents who were teens and twenty-somethings during the cultural revolution of the 1960s and 70s. In a 1969 Playboy interview, the comedian Don Rickles was asked what he thought about the hippie movement. His response was, "I don't think about hippies. Today's hippy is tomorrow's mutual fund salesman."

That Nostradamus-like prediction could not have been more accurate. The so-called Free Love Generation promised a utopian world of peace, love and tranquility, but instead delivered divorce, drugs and hypocrisy. Consequently, many of their children have a mistrusting and cynical view of the world.

The rise in popularity of the extreme sports is a reflection of the growth of the Explorer mentality. Whereas their parents protested for social change and communal harmony, Explorers are unapologetically self-centered. They don't like to answer to anyone or follow convention. You appeal to Explorers with excitement and rebellion.

Smirnoff Vodka has a print ad that is a photo of gargoyles on the side of a building with pigeon sitting on them. Three gargoyles look the same but one has wide eyes and a full mouth with feathers coming out of it. He broke the rules by eating the pigeon. Explorers have to be careful with their short-term gain, long-term pain approach to life. They will eventually have to grow up and take care of themselves and their family.

I think most of us go through a period of youthful exploration, which is probably healthy. But to continue to "chase the dragon" can, in itself, become a limiting strategy because your resources, especially financial, will dwindle in time. Unless you're lucky enough to earn the riches of a champion skateboarder like Tony Hawk, you may end up selling mutual funds to survive, probably socially conscious mutual funds.

Based on accumulated hours you have laughed in your life, which comedian would you rate number one?

Also, for curiosity purposes give your age and if you are over 30, lets use like 30 to 40, 40 to 50 etc if you don't want to offer your exact age. I ask this because it would be intersting to see if some younger folks have had the opportunity to listen to older comedy like Carlin or Don Rickles etc.

Stephen Fry and the show QI or A Bit of Fry and Laurie.

Mock the Week as well as it has super comedians on there which I find hilarious!

Oh and Bill Bailey! Especially the woodlouse song!

Stephen Fry would be number 1 though!
