Playin' with My Friends: Bennett Sings the Blues Playin' with My Friends: Bennett Sings the Blues
List Price: $7.99
Sale Price: $3.49

15 tracks - duets with Diana Krall, Ray Charles, Billy Joel etc. Booklet has light 'pinch' mark.

Tony Bennett's commercial renaissance of the 1980s and '90s was aided by a string of albums that communicated his essential values while providing conceptual rings (Sinatra, Astaire, women singers) for record buyers to grasp. Playin' with My Friends links duets with an assortment of marquee artists to a set of blues and blues-influenced standards. While Bennett is no Joe Turner or Bobby Bland, his upbeat style melds well with that of most of his guests. He achieves the proper level of brio on "Let the Good Times Roll" with B.B. King and sits in spiritedly with Stevie Wonder ("Everyday [I Have the Blues]") and Ray Charles (a moaning "Evenin'" that's the standout cut). In fact, it's the visitors, not the host, who occasionally misfire: Sheryl Crow sounds unsure of her putative pain on "Good Morning, Heartache," while Natalie Cole is simply too glib to make for a convincing "Stormy Weather." Still, Bennett, his small band, and the best of these cameos make Playin' more than just another series of superstar walk-ons. --Rickey Wright

The Avengers '66, Set 1 [VHS] The Avengers '66, Set 1 [VHS]
List Price: $19.95
Sale Price: $6.70

Get your kicks with The Avengers '66. This three-volume boxed set uncorks six sought-after episodes from this cult classic series' fourth season. Patrick Macnee, the umbrella-toting gentleman spy John Steed, and Diana Rigg, the ravishing Mrs. Emma Peel, investigate further extraordinary goings-on in the most ordinary of places, including a swank hotel ("Room Without a View" on volume 1) and a golf course and dance school ("The 13th Hole" and "The Quick-Quick-Slow Death," both on volume 3). Suitable for framing is "The Girl from Auntie" on volume 2, in which an art dealer, who supplies his clients "anything for a price" (including the Mona Lisa!), kidnaps Emma for auction to enemy agents. Perhaps members of Monty Python's Flying Circus got the inspiration for their "Hell's Grannies" sketch from this episode's quaint assassin, an elderly "lady" who does in her victims (including four chaps named John, Paul, George, and... Fred) with knitting needles. For new fans, the episodes found in The Avengers '65 sets are of a better vintage, and The Avengers '67 offerings give more of a campy, effervescent kick. But '66 was still a very good year, and Avengers aficionados will, of course, want to own every episode from the Mrs. Peel era. "What's so special about Mrs. Peel?" a woman asks in "Auntie." "You'd think she was Madame Curie and a half-dozen others all rolled into one." She is, to borrow a phrase, all that. Each episode is in black and white. Volumes 1, 2, and 3 are also available for purchase separately. A second Avengers '66 boxed set is also available. --Donald Liebenson

St Paul's Cathedral with its Iconic Dome Dominates the London Skyline

St Paul's Cathedral, with its world-famous Dome, is a popular tourist attraction in London. You can enjoy the cathedral's exquisite interior, and uncover fascinating stories about its history.

Explore St Paul's for yourself and try out the acoustic quirks of the Whispering Gallery, climb up 85 metres to the Golden Gallery and enjoy breathtaking, panoramic views of the capital and many London attractions, or take a quiet moment to reflect and contemplate. A visit to St Paul's will be an experience you will treasure forever.

St Paul's was founded in 604AD. However, the present building, the fourth on the site, was built between 1675 and 1710. It is the second largest cathedral in the world, after St Peter's in Rome. Construction did not start until about 9 years after the Great Fire in 1666, which destroyed the previous structure. This earlier building, started in 1087, took 200 years to build and was even bigger than the present building, which took 35 years to complete.

The cathedral is the most famous work of London's greatest architect, Sir Christopher Wren (who was buried in it). However, the delay of 9 years in the building of St Paul's Cathedral was due to the initial building design not meeting with Royal approval.

Other famous people who were buried in St Paul's included Lord Nelson, the Duke of Wellington (whose monument took 56 years to complete) and Sir Winston Churchill.

The cathedral miraculously survived the Blitz in World War Two when most of the surrounding area was flattened by German bombing raids.

In 1981, the Royal wedding of Charles and Diana took place here.

In front of the cathedral there are some wooden posts representing the last City toll gate, built in the thirteenth century. They mark the old route to Cheapside. The "gate" is now opened only during ceremonial occasions.

Hotels near St Paul's Cathedral are conveniently placed for other attractions such as:

* Mansion House, a rare surviving Georgian town palace, providing the Lord Mayor of the City of London with living, working and entertainment space. The construction started in 1739 and Sir Crispin Gascoigne was the first Lord Mayor to take up residence in 1752. This stylish Mansion House is the venue for city functions such as business meetings, dinners and banquets.

* The Monument was built between 1671 and 1677 to commemorate the Great Fire of London and to celebrate the rebuilding of the City of London. The fire broke out in a baker's house in Pudding Lane on 2nd September 1666 and uncontrollably spread and destroyed a huge area of the city. It was finally extinguished four days later on the 5th September 1666. The Monument stands at 61 metres tall and provides a fascinating view of the City.

* The Barbican Centre is Europe's largest multi-arts and conference venue. It has a diverse range of art, music, theatre, dance, film and education events. The London Symphony Orchestra has its home at the Barbican Centre. It provides entertainment for the convenience of the local residents as well as people working in the City.

* The Bank of England Museum tells the story of the Bank of England from its foundation in 1694 to its role today as the United Kingdom's central bank. Learn more about the current role of the Bank  - setting rates to keep inflation low, issuing banknotes and working with others to keep the financial system stable. There are many events and activities there including the taking of an audio tour and lifting of a genuine gold bar. Admission is free.

Was Diana Spencer related to Sir Wnston Spencer Churchill? If so, how?

Yes, but indirectly.

An ancestor of the more recent Diana Spencer, also named Lady Diana Spencer (1710-1735) was the grandaughter of John Churchill, the 1st Duke of Malborough. Known as "Malborough", John Churchill is often considered the greatest military tactician in the history of Great Britain.

Marborough and his wife had 7 children, Harriet, Henrieta, Anne, John, Elizabeth, Mary and Charles Churchill. Unfortunately, all of Marlborough's sons died before he did, so his title of Duke was allowed to pass (by special order of Parliament) to his eldest daughter, Lady Henrietta.

Another of the daughters, Lady Anne Churchill, married Charles Spencer, 3rd Earl of Sunderland, and it is this line of descendancy that provided both the link to "Princess" Diana and to the modern day Dukes of Marlborough.

Edward John Spencer, 8th Earl Spencer, was Diana's father, and the current (9th Earl Spencer), Charles Edward Maurice Spencer, was Diana's brother.

Winston Churchill's father, Lord Randolph Churchill, was the third son of the 7th Duke of Marlborough.

It's complicated, but yes, they are related.
