By any rational measure, Alan Parker's cinematic interpretation of Pink Floyd: The Wall is a glorious failure. Glorious because its imagery is hypnotically striking, frequently resonant, and superbly photographed by the gifted cinematographer Peter Biziou. And a failure because the entire exercise is hopelessly dour, loyal to the bleak themes and psychological torment of Roger Waters's great musical opus, and yet utterly devoid of the humor that Waters certainly found in his own material. Any attempt to visualize The Wall would be fraught with artistic danger, and Parker succumbs to his own self-importance, creating a film that's as fascinating as it is flawed. The film is, for better and worse, the fruit of three artists in conflict--Parker indulging himself, and Waters in league with designer Gerald Scarfe, whose brilliant animated sequences suggest that he should have directed and animated this film in its entirety. Fortunately, this clash of talent and ego does not prevent The Wall from being a mesmerizing film. Boomtown Rats frontman Bob Geldof (in his screen debut) is a fine choice to play Waters's alter ego--an alienated, "comfortably numb" rock star whose psychosis manifests itself as an emotional (and symbolically physical) wall between himself and the cold, cruel world. Weaving Waters's autobiographical details into his own jumbled vision, Parker ultimately fails to combine a narrative thread with experimental structure. It's a rich, bizarre, and often astonishing film that will continue to draw a following, but the real source of genius remains the music of Roger Waters. --Jeff Shannon

Directed by one "Nathanial Hörnblowér" and shot by 50 fans, Awesome is the Beastie Boys live and direct. (The full title includes a four-letter word in its six-letter-plus-apostrophe incarnation.) The place is New York's Madison Square Garden. The date is October 9, 2004. The show begins with scratching from DJ Mix Master Mike as the amateur operators, armed with Hi-8 cameras, get busy--from the audience, at the concession stands, and even in the bathrooms. Subtitled "An Authorized Bootleg," Awesome features the tracksuit-sporting trio, Mike D, Adrock, and MCA, running through numbers from all six records. (Later, they bust out the pastel tuxes for a pro-shot suite of jazz-funk.) Selections include "Brass Monkey" (Licensed to Ill), "Shake Your Rump" (Paul's Boutique), "Pass the Mic" (Check Your Head), "Sure Shot" (Ill Communication), "Body Movin'" (Hello Nasty), and "Ch-Ch-Check It Out" (To the 5 Boroughs). On stage, they're joined by Keyboard Money Mark, percussionist Alfredo Ortiz, and Doug E. Fresh, "the world's greatest entertainer," who adds a little human beat-box to their rhymes. For viewers concerned about Blair Witch-style vertigo, rest assured that editor Neal Usatin has stitched the shaky footage together skillfully enough to stave it off. Almost as essential as their Criterion Collection Video Anthology, Awesome may be the world's most professional home movie. From Wikipedia: Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever was a 1983 television special produced by Suzanne de Passe for Motown Records, to commemorate Motown's twenty-fifth year of existence. (Motown was founded in January 1959, meaning that a twenty-fifth anniversary special should have aired in 1984, not 1983. One could argue that Gordy's vision of what would become "Hitsville U.S.A." was conceived in 1958, considering the month of Motown's founding.) The show was also co-written by de Passe along with Ruth Adkins Robinson who would go on to write shows with de Passe for the next 25 years, including the follow up label tributes-through "Motown 40," Buz Kohan was the head writer of the threesome. The program was taped before a live studio audience at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium in Pasadena, California on March 25, 1983,[1] and broadcast on NBC on May 16. Among its highlights were Michael Jackson's iconic performance of "Billie Jean", a Temptations/Four Tops "battle of the bands", Marvin Gaye's inspired speech about black music history and his memorable performance of "What's Going On", a Jackson 5 reunion, and an abbreviated reunion of Diana Ross & the Supremes, who performed their final #1 hit, "Someday We'll Be Together" from 1969.
