Les Miserables: The 10th Anniversary Dream Cast in Concert at London's Royal Albert Hall Les Miserables: The 10th Anniversary Dream Cast in Concert at London's Royal Albert Hall
List Price: $34.98
Sale Price: $24.93

To mark the 10th anniversary of the award-winning musical, an all-star array of "Les Miz" cast members from productions around the world took the stage at London's Royal Albert Hall, joined by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, to perform the songs in concert. Colm Wilkinson, Judy Kuhn, Philip Quast, Lea Salonga, and Ruthie Henshall head the cast; songs include "I Dreamed a Dream," "One Day More!," "On My Own" and a special encore of "Do You Hear the People Sing?," performed by 17 Jean Valjeans in their native languages. 148 min. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital stereo; "making of" documentary; interviews. Two-disc set.

The 10th anniversary concert video of the international musical sensation Les Misérables might be the best thing to appease fans until a full-fledged movie comes along. Or it might be even better, as feature films are often subject to extramusical casting considerations and this 1995 dream cast is superb. Reprising their roles from the original London company are Colm Wilkinson (Valjean), Michael Ball (Marius), and Alun Armstrong (Thenardier). From Broadway come Judy Kuhn (Cosette), Lea Salonga (Eponine), and Michael Maguire (Enjolras); from a later London production comes Ruthie Henshall (Fantine); and from Australia comes Philip Quast (Javert). Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg's score vividly captures the passion of Victor Hugo's epic tale of post-Revolutionary France, combining tear-jerking ballads ("I Dreamed a Dream," "Bring Him Home") and rousing anthems ("Do You Hear the People Sing"). The format of this concert is closer to that of a dramatic cantata rather than a fully staged production; the singers stand at their microphone stands with an orchestra and chorus behind them, but they do wear costumes and participate in some movement. At certain points such as the climax of the barricade scene, the video switches to action from a stage production. The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra sounds great, and it can be thrilling when 200 choristers (dressed in logo T-shirts) rise to their feet for a full-company number such as "One Day More." Also, subtitles provide date and scene information and help move the story along. The 147-minute video contains footage not seen when Les Mis was a PBS pledge-drive staple, most notably the encore in which a progression of 17 actors who have played Valjean around the world share "Do You Hear the People Sing?" Each sings a line in his native language, a testament to the enduring power of this show to audiences everywhere. --David Horiuchi DVD features The 2008 two-disc edition presents the concert on a single-sided disc (the original DVD split the concert over two sides) with optional English subtitles. It's also in anamorphic widescreen (1.78:1 aspect ratio) comparied to the original's 1.33 full-screen. The second disc has Stage by Stage: Les Miserables, the hourlong documentary from 1988. Unfortunately the sound is only Dolby Digital 2.0. Early editions of the DVD had an odd omission (compared to the earlier Sony DVD)--the first 10 seconds of Gavroche's "Little People" were missing ("Good evening, dear inspector, lovely evening, my dear...")--that has now been corrected. --David Horiuchi

To celebrate 10 years as the world's most popular musical, the cast of Les Misérables threw a phenomenal birthday party at London's Royal Albert Hall in 1995. A decade after Trevor Nunn directed its premiere at the Barbican Centre, and the subsequent move into what became a permanent home at the West End Palace Theatre, producer Cameron Macintosh felt the time had come for a little outing for "the miserables." Conductor David Charles Abell, having climbed out of the cluttered Palace pit, for one glorious night has the entire Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at his disposal and there are appearances from over 150 singers--birthday celebs from Les Mis stagings worldwide--who flocked to the grandiose venue. Hosts for the night are the 1995 London cast: Colm Wilkinson's Valjean has power and beauty in "Who Am I?" and "Bring Him Home," and Michael Ball is a charming Marius. Miss Saigon herself, Lea Salonga, gets the crowd-pleasing favorite "On My Own." The Albert Hall sounds filled to the brim with an appreciative audience that contributes to the festive atmosphere. The result is a real treat for fans and lovers of Boubil and Schönberg's greatest musical--this double CD is an obligatory item in every collection of Les Mis memorabilia. --Yngvil V.G.

List Price: $9.99
Sale Price: $3.89

The title might be a trifle grand for what is essentially a one-hour 1962 TV special--that's been colorized, yet. But Judy Garland is in fine voice, belting out signature tunes like "When You're Smiling" and "The Man That Got Away." Rat Packers Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin are at their unctuous best, with Sinatra at one point casually flicking ash from his cigarette right onto the stage while singing an emotional "I See Your Face Before Me." The patter among the three stars is a bit stiff, but the numbers are all showstoppers, and Garland, especially, is belting in her most over-the-top Carnegie Hall tradition. Her finale, a medley of "Swanee," "Rock-a-bye Your Baby" and "San Francisco" still brings down the house 40 years later. (Trivia alert: the special was directed by a pre-Moonstruck Norman Jewison.) --Anne Hurley

Judy Garland - In Concert - Volume One Judy Garland - In Concert - Volume One
Sale Price: $7.14

The legend of Judy Garland lives on in this one woman concert, originally broadcast on CBS Television in 1964. The famous Carnegie Hall concerts were released on records but were never filmed or videotaped. This special performance is the closest Judy Garland fnas will find to those concerts. This program aired nationally on February 9, 1964. Selections include a rousing medley of "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" and "He's Got the Whole World In His Hands", a patriotic salute to the songs of World War I, and such long time favorites as "Make Someone Happy," "That's Entertainment," and "Rockabye Your Baby with a Dixie Melody." Judy also pays tribute to her two famous daughters, singing "Liza" and "Lorna". The finale is an inspiring rendition of "America the Beautiful".

Eric Clapton - Unplugged Eric Clapton - Unplugged
List Price: $18.96
Sale Price: $9.51

Studio: Wea-des Moines Video Release Date: 03/06/1997

This laid-back, live, intimate session featuring Eric Clapton's bluesy guitar playing is quite enjoyable--if a bit limited in scope. With little lighting and frills and a small group backing him up, Clapton picks up his acoustic guitar and leads the listener down memory lane. Clapton is clearly on his best behavior as he engages in minimal small talk with his audience and lets the music speak for itself. The erstwhile Yardbird and former member of Cream and Blind Faith riffs through some dozen-plus songs including "Before You Accuse Me," "Tears in Heaven," "Walkin' Blues," "Alberta," "San Francisco Bay Blues" (in which Clapton thankfully cuts loose a bit), and his great hits "Layla" (written for his ex-wife, Patti Boyd Harrison) and "Old Love," a standard that garnered big applause. But the simple set and sparse stage can barely contain the energy that fills the arena when Clapton launches into "Rollin' and Tumblin'," a raucous, rousing bit of blues that Clapton is certainly still up for. This video is primarily for Clapton's most ardent fans, providing some heartfelt, soulful instrumental prowess in addition to an aging British rocker singing the blues as well as a white guy can. --Paula Nechak

Concert Judy

The ukulele is not originally Hawaiian but is actually an instrument that was introduced to Hawaii in 1879 when Joao Fernandez, a Portuguese immigrant to arrived in Honolulu aboard the Portuguese ship the Ravenscrag. He came with 500 other immigrants from the island of Madeira to work in the Sugar cane fields. Instead of working he spent much of his time playing Portugese folk songs on a borrowed cavaquinho, a small 4 string guitar shaped instrument made of pine wood. The natives he entertained thought his fingers moved like "jumping fleas". Although it is open for conjecture, this strange image is a rough translation of the Hawaiian word, "ukulele". Fernandez soon played his instrument for King David Kalakaua, Queen Emma, and Queen Liliuokalani. King David soon became a practitioner himself and introduced it to other royals. Soon local craftsmen started building and modifying the instrument. The most popular wood used in it's construction is the Hawaiian koa wood. Island musicians started trying alternate tunings and playing methods. Because of it was so portable, light weight, and had such a pleasing sound, it became the most popular instrument on the island. In Hawaiian bands since Fernandez's time, the ukulele has often been accompanied by the slack steel guitar, the mandolin, and Hawaiian drums. As it has been used in other styles of music, the uke can be accompanied by just about any musical instrument and sound great

Many people think the ukulele is strictly an Hawaiian or tropical instrument but this is far from the truth. As the ukulele grows in popularity, it is being used in almost every style of music including folk, rock, jazz, and classical. Today there are ukulele fests all over the world that offer concerts and workshops by some of the most talented players in the world. At the uke fest I went to in New York, there was one huge room filled with every style and type of ukulele. Many famous uke vendors and entertainers, like Jumping Jim Beloff, were there to display their wares. If you like unique ukes, you can buy a cigar box uke there or buy the kit to make one yourself. Jumping Jim carries his line of "Flukes" and "Flees", triangular and oval shaped ukes made of a durable plastic. They were invented by his brother in-law. They sound as good as the wooden uke and the flukes stand up by themselves! The smallest and highest pitched ukuleles are the sopranos, with the strings tuned GCEA, as are the larger tenor and concert ukes. The lower pitched and largest uke is the baritone: it is tuned like the first 4 strings of a guitar: DGBE. If you are a ukulele enthusiast, check out a uke fest or just explore how many ways a ukulele can be used!

My name is Melinda Judy but go by the stage name Lyndie Diamond on my website http://www.globalsoundstream.com
It is a musical education website created to both entertain and educate the public about the diversity in music.
I'm writing this article about ukuleles because I have a passion for them, especially after experiencing Hawaii, and it is one of the first instruments introduced on my website home page. I'll be continually adding more great information about musical instruments and your favorite entertainers.

Anyone Ever Seen JOHN LYDON (Sex Pistols, Public Image) - In Concert?

.
What was your opinion of him as a Front-Man?

Positve and/or Negative responses welcome.

I saw him once - and I'll save my opinion for the end.

Extra Q - but not necessary to Answer - Did Anyone see him on "Judge Judy" ?
.
Thanks :)
.

I've seen the Sex Pistols reunited a few times.. Up close and personal once..

I've bummed a cigarette off him hahahahaha

He's a very charismatic guy but very friendly off stage. Alot of America's privileged middle class punkettes will call him a phony because they're so used to commodified anger.

As for his music.. It had a profound impact on me as a young man. It made me NOT want to pick up a guitar and scream. Make your own kind of music even if nobody else sings along. That's what I got out of it and I had my philosophy validated by the man himself.
