The first three Wallace & Gromit shorts are grouped together in a single volume. A Grand Day Out Nominated for an Academy Award in 1990, this was the first short-film adventure starring Wallace & Gromit. This 24-minute comedy was created by clay animator Nick Park over a six-year period at the National Film and Television School in London and at the Aardman Animation studios, which Park boosted to international acclaim. In their debut adventure, Wallace and his furry pal Gromit are planning a vacation, but first they've got a crisis to solve: they've got plenty of crackers but no cheese! Undeterred, Wallace comes up with an extreme solution to the cheese shortage: since the moon is made of cheese (we all know that's true, right?), he decides to build a rocket and blast off for a cheesy lunar picnic! Gromit's only too happy to help, and before long the inventive duo is on the moon, where they encounter a clever appliance that's part oven, part robot, part lunar skiing enthusiast... Well, you just have to see the movie to understand how any of this whimsical lunar-cy can make any sense! It's a grand tale of wonderful discoveries, fantastic inventions--and really great cheese! The Wrong Trousers Clay-animation master Nick Park deservedly won the 1993 Academy Award for Best Animated Short for this 30-minute masterpiece, in which the good-natured inventor Wallace and his trusty dog, Gromit, return for another grand adventure. It all begins on the morning of Gromit's birthday, when Wallace gives his beloved pooch a rather selfish gift that (to Gromit's chagrin) is more useful to Wallace--a pair of mechanical "techno-trousers" ("ex-NASA," says Wallace, duly impressed) that can be programmed to take Gromit out for "walkies" while Wallace sits comfortably at home. Gromit's not exactly thrilled with the new gadget, and things go from bad to worse when Wallace rents a room to a new boarder--a rather suspicious-looking penguin--to offset his rising expenses. As it turns out, the penguin's a notorious thief, and the amazing techno-trousers provide a foolproof method of pulling off a diamond heist! It's Gromit's big opportunity for canine heroics, and The Wrong Trousers turns into one of the funniest, most inventive caper-comedies ever made, with an action-packed climax on a speeding miniature train. Will the notorious "Feathers" wind up in jail, where he belongs? Will Gromit finally get his due recognition? Watch this amazing marvel of clay animation to see why Wallace & Gromit have become global celebrities--this is comedic ingenuity at its finest. A Close Shave Hot from the international triumph of The Wrong Trousers, clay animator Nick Park knew that his third Wallace & Gromit film was going to have to be the biggest and best adventure yet for the mild-mannered inventor Wallace and his perceptive pooch, Gromit. With the ambitiously zany plot of A Close Shave, Park and his fellow animators rose to the occasion, and their film won the 1995 Academy Award (Park's second Oscar) for Best Animated Short. This time out, Wallace & Gromit have teamed up to provide a window-washing service, and that's how Wallace meets the lovely Wendolene Ramsbottom, a wool-shop owner whose malevolent dog, Preston, turns out to be the mastermind of a sheep-napping scheme! Of course, no Wallace & Gromit adventure can be without a grandiose gadget, so Wallace's latest invention is the Knit-O-Matic, a yarn-making machine capable of shearing a whole flock of sheep just a bit too efficiently! When the villainous Preston gains control of the mechanical knitting marvel, Gromit must race to the rescue, and A Close Shave reaches new heights of clay-animation mastery. Every shot is a testament to Nick Park's patience, his clever ingenuity, and his filmmaking flair. The movie's so technically impressive, in fact, that the whole world wondered where Park could go next. It was clear that Wallace & Gromit would eventually star in an animated feature-length movie, since this marvelous 30-minute film represents its own kind of short-form perfection. --Jeff Shannon
The perfect gift set for the Wallace and Gromit fan. All three of animator Nick Park's first adventures featuring the dotty inventor and his loyal but laconic dog--The Wrong Trousers, A Close Shave, and A Grand Day Out--come wrapped together and ready for multiple viewings. This is truly one of the rare gift sets that will entertain the entire family. --Doug Thomas

You know that old dramatic principle of suspension of disbelief? You'll have to rely on it for this box-office smash, but you won't be disappointed. Harrison Ford plays a U.S. president who single-handedly employs his rigid antiterrorism policy when a band of Russian thugs hatch a mid-flight takeover of Air Force One. Gary Oldman, who chews the scenery as the lead terrorist, will shoot a hostage at the slightest provocation. Glenn Close plays the sternly pragmatic vice president who negotiates with Oldman from her Washington seat of power. If you can believe that the aircraft's pressurized cabin can sustain hundreds of rounds of machine-gun fire, you'll buy anything in this entertaining potboiler, especially thanks to Ford's stalwart heroics and some nifty special effects. Director Wolfgang Petersen (Das Boot) keeps the action moving so fast you won't be sweating the details. Don't forget your parachute! --Jeff Shannon

Glenn Close continues her steely reign as Machiavellian lawyer Patty Hewes in the compelling third season of the award-winning legal drama Damages. Here, as in previous seasons, the story arc hinges on a single, high-profile case that leaves everyone in the orbit of Hewes and her protégé/nemesis Ellen Parsons (Rose Byrne) reeling with physical and emotional war wounds. The case in question for season three is a Ponzi-scheme of Bernie Madoff proportions: Patty is assigned by the government to recover the millions of dollars scammed from investors by Louis Tobin (Len Cariou), the flinty patriarch of a wealthy but highly dysfunctional family. Ellen, now working at the district attorney's office, finds herself again drawn to Patty's side as she works the criminal angle on the Tobin case, while the family's faithful lawyer (Martin Short) attempts to parry their efforts to ferret out the truth. The joys of Damages lie not in courtroom fireworks--in fact, Patty and Co. never set foot in one throughout the season--but in the complexities of the investigation, which uncovers a network of secrets, deceptions, and outright lies on both sides of the case. Things are rarely what they seem in Damages, and that applies to season three as well: over the course of 13 episodes, Tobin's dutiful son (Campbell Scott), well-coiffured wife (Lily Tomlin), and especially Short's lawyer shed layers of identity and loyalty, while Patty and Ellen's relationship continues to deepen and darken as the stories of their own pasts come to the surface. The intricacies of the interweaving plot lines are expertly carried out by the regular cast and its stellar guests; Close, Byrne, Tomlin, Ted Danson, and Short, who is terrific in a rare non-comedic role, all received 2010 Emmy nominations, while Tate Donovan, as Patty's long-suffering majordomo, Tom Shayes, enjoys a meatier and more emotionally driven story arc this season. There's also quality support from Dominic Chianese (The Sopranos' Uncle Junior), Craig Bierko, Tom Noonan, Miriam Shor, Bill Raymond (the Greek on The Wire), and Keith Carradine, and longtime fans will be pleased to see Danson return to his career-redefining role as the morally conflicted Arthur Frobisher. The performances, along with the fine writing and direction (series co-creators Glenn Kessler, Daniel Zelman, and Todd Kessler all helm an episode, as does Donovan), help to smooth over the season's few wrong notes, which include Shayes's relationship with a seemingly ubiquitous homeless man. Extras, which are spread across the three-disc set, include two commentary tracks with the Kesslers and Zelman, who are joined by Short on "You Haven't Replaced Me" and Donovan and Byrne on the season finale, "The Next One's Gonna Go in Your Throat." The co-creators/producers are front and center in short introductions to each episode, as well as a featurette on directing the series; a selection of deleted scenes and a blooper reel, dominated by Short and Tomlin, round out the set. --Paul Gaita

A group of sleazy real estate men face a high-pressure stress as they are put in danger of getting the ax by their hard-driving bosses.System Requirements:Starring: Al Pacino Alan Arkin Alec Baldwin Ed Harris Jack Lemmon and Kevin Spacey. Directed By: James Foley. Running Time: 100 Min. Color. This film is presented in both "Widescreen" and "Standard" formats. Copyright 2002 Artisan Entertainment.Format: DVD MOVIE Genre: DRAMA Rating: R UPC: 012236114505 Manufacturer No: 13286
Like moths to a flame, great actors gravitate to the singular genius of playwright-screenwriter David Mamet, who updated his Pulitzer Prize-winning play for this all-star screen adaptation. The material is not inherently cinematic, so the movie's greatest asset is Mamet's peerless dialogue and the assembly of a once-in-a-lifetime cast led by Al Pacino, Jack Lemmon, and Alec Baldwin (the last in a role Mamet created especially for the film). Often regarded as a critique of the Reagan administration's impact on the American economy, the play and film focus on a competitive group of real estate salesmen who've gone from feast to famine in a market gone cold. When an executive "motivator" (Alec Baldwin) demands a sales contest among the agents in the cramped office, the stakes are critically high: any agent who fails to meet his quota of sales "leads" (i.e., potential buyers) will lose his job. This intense ultimatum is a boon for the office superstar (Pacino), but a once-successful salesman (Lemmon) now finds himself clinging nervously to faded glory. Political and personal rivalries erupt under pressure when the other agents (Alan Arkin, Ed Harris) suspect the office manager (Kevin Spacey) of foul play. This cauldron of anxiety, tension, and sheer desperation provides fertile soil for Mamet's scathingly rich dialogue, which is like rocket fuel for some of the greatest actors of our time. Pacino won an Oscar nomination for his volatile performance, but it's Lemmon who's the standout, doing some of the best work of his distinguished career. Director James Foley shapes Mamet's play into a stylish, intensely focused film that will stand for decades as a testament to its brilliant writer and cast. --Jeff Shannon

What about a rose to signify a diseased person at wedding?
My fiance's father, my 2 grandmas who I was SOOO close to and his grandpa... What if we put like a pretty white bow around 4 long stemmed roses and put them on chairs in the front row during the Ceremony. Or in a vase in front of the sign in or next to my bridal. and Just a little note saying In Remembrance of....
Any ideas on how to do this w out it being a downer?
I prefer one nice floral arrangement at the altar (or to the side), with mention in a wedding program.
For example, at the bottom of the program you could print:
The yellow (or white) roses on the altar are in loving memory of
Mrs. Barbara Smith, the bride's grandmother
Mrs. Jane Jones, the bride's grandmother
Mr. John Doe, the groom's father
Mr. Enrique Doe, the groom's grandfather
The chair thing would be too sad for me, and many of your guests may also find it sad. You have to remember that there are others present who loved the deceased family members also. You don't want to do anything they might find disturbing . . . or grief-inducing, I guess one would say.
