This remastered, pan-and-scan 30th-anniversary edition of that kiddie-car caper is flawed but solid family fare. It retains a quaint charm while some of the songs--including the title tune--are quite hummable. A huge plus is Dick Van Dyke, who is extremely appealing as an eccentric inventor around the turn of the century. With nimble fingers and a unique way of looking at the world, he invents for his children a magic car that floats and flies. Or does he? The special effects are tame by today's standards, and the film is about 20 minutes too long--but its enthusiasm charms. The script was cowritten by Roald Dahl and based on the novel by Ian Fleming, best known for his James Bond adventures. --Rochelle O'Gorman

When mary poppins floats out of the london sky and into the lives of two playful children she and a carefree chimney sweeps named bert make every chore a game and every day an adventure. Filled with dazzling special effects and award-winning music. Studio: Buena Vista Home Video Release Date: 09/14/2007 Starring: Julie Andrews David Tomlinson Run time: 139 minutes Rating: G

There is only one word that comes close to accurately describing the enchanting Mary Poppins, and that term was coined by the movie itself: supercalifragilisticexpialidocious! Even at 2 hours and 20 minutes, Disney's pioneering mixture of live action and animation (based on the books by P.L. Travers) still holds kids spellbound. Julie Andrews won an Oscar as the world's most magically idealized nanny ("practically perfect in every way," and complete with lighter-than-air umbrella), and Dick Van Dyke is her clownishly charming beau, Bert the chimney sweep. The songs are also terrific, ranging from bright and cheery ("A Spoonful of Sugar") to dark and cheery (the Oscar-winning "Chim Chim Cher-ee") to touchingly melancholy ("Feed the Birds"). Many consider Mary Poppins to be the crowning achievement of Walt Disney's career--and it was the only one of his features to be nominated for a best picture Academy Award until Beauty and the Beast in 1991. --Jim Emerson

Doctor Dolittle Doctor Dolittle
List Price: $14.98
Sale Price: $12.74

Rex Harrison is the 19th-century English doctor who embarks on a quest to learn the languages of animals and along the way meets such strange creatures as the two-headed Pushmi-Pullyu, the Great Pink Sea Snail, and Anthony Newley. Song-filled family gem, based on the stories of Hugh Lofting, also stars Samantha Eggar, Richard Attenborough. Songs include the Oscar-winning "If I Could Talk to the Animals," "My Friend the Doctor." 145 min. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital 4.0, Dolby Digital stereo, French Dolby Digital mono; Subtitles: English, Spanish; theatrical trailer.

So, they let both Rex Harrison and Anthony Newley sing. This 1968 family musical is classier than the 1998 Eddie Murphy remake, with all of its scatological humor. This won a couple of Oscars (Best Song, Best Effects) and was nominated for seven more, including Best Picture. At the time of release, however, this was a box-office dud. Based (in part) on the magical Hugh Lofting book, it begins in Puddleby-by-the-Marsh, England, from which the world-renowned veterinarian Dolittle (Harrison) begins his quest for a giant pink sea snail. Children should find this enjoyable for its exotic creatures, such as the Pushme-Pullyou. Most adults may not agree as readily, although some of us consider this a guilty pleasure. --Rochelle O'Gorman

The Wizard of Oz [VHS] The Wizard of Oz [VHS]
List Price: $8.98
Sale Price: $6.95

When it was released during Hollywood's golden year of 1939, The Wizard of Oz didn't start out as the perennial classic it has since become. The film did respectable business, but it wasn't until its debut on television that this family favorite saw its popularity soar. And while Oz's TV broadcasts are now controlled by media mogul Ted Turner (who owns the rights), the advent of home video has made this lively musical a mainstay in the staple diet of great American films. Young Dorothy Gale (Judy Garland), her dog, Toto, and her three companions on the yellow brick road to Oz--the Tin Man (Jack Haley), the Cowardly Lion (Bert Lahr), and the Scarecrow (Ray Bolger)--have become pop-culture icons and central figures in the legacy of fantasy for children. As the Wicked Witch who covets Dorothy's enchanted ruby slippers, Margaret Hamilton has had the singular honor of scaring the wits out of children for more than six decades. The film's still as fresh, frightening, and funny as it was when first released. It may take some liberal detours from the original story by L. Frank Baum, but it's loyal to the Baum legacy while charting its own course as a spectacular film. Shot in glorious Technicolor, befitting its dynamic production design (Munchkinland alone is a psychedelic explosion of color and decor), The Wizard of Oz may not appeal to every taste as the years go by, but it's required viewing for kids of all ages. --Jeff Shannon DVD features The Wizard of Oz DVD released in 1999 was loaded with extra features, but it's now safe to throw away that version in all its cardboard-package glory in favor of this new two-disc edition. First things first: All the bonus material from the earlier disc is there (with one small exception). That includes the Angela Lansbury-hosted documentary The Making of a Movie Classic; the outtakes and deleted scenes, including Judy Garland's "Over the Rainbow" reprise and the home-movie recording of "The Jitterbug"; the sketches and stills and composer Harold Arlen's home movies; the audio underscores and radio programs; the 1979 interviews with Margaret Hamilton, Ray Bolger, and Jack Haley; and other items too numerous to mention. (Some text introductions to the features have been replaced by narration by Lansbury, for whatever reason.) Brand-new to the 2005 edition is a sharp restoration using Warner's Ultra Resolution process and an accompanying featurette on how it's done. The technicians also discuss how the sound was remixed, though that would have been more effective had it included surround-sound demonstrations (the featurette is in 2.0). Other features on the new set include a commentary track by critic John Fricke supplemented by vintage cast interviews (he offers a lot of trivia, and debunks the myth that Shirley Temple was ever close to getting the Dorothy role); profiles of nine cast members and clips of other movies they appeared in (including Toto); a lightly animated 10-minute storybook again narrated by Lansbury; 2001 and 2005 behind-the-scenes featurettes; and a 1950 Lux Radio Theater broadcast. Oh, and if you were still wondering about the missing material mentioned above--the 1999 disc included one-minute excerpts of three early treatments of The Wizard of Oz. Those excerpts are not included in the two-disc special edition, but the third disc of the three-disc collector's edition includes the complete versions of those treatments and more. --David Horiuchi

Bedknobs & Broomsticks [VHS] Bedknobs & Broomsticks [VHS]
List Price: $19.99
Sale Price: $6.25

When a mail-order apprentice witch (Angela Lansbury) is saddled with three sibling refugees from London during World War II, the outlook is grim. But the kids soon discover her secret and sign on for adventure in the name of England. With the aid of a magical bed, they track down her fraudulent headmaster (David Tomlinson) to find the spell that will aid the Allies. Fascinated that she has actually achieved results with his lessons, he joins forces. The quintet does battle with corrupt booksellers, animated-lion royalty, and, eventually, invading Germans. Songs include Lansbury's Oscar-nominated "The Age of Not Believing." This film is often compared to director Robert Stevenson's earlier effort, Mary Poppins, and for good reason. In addition to Tomlinson, the movies share a fondness for magic at the hands of a good woman, light romance with an understanding male, and wide-eyed children. Stevenson also graces both films with interaction between humans and animated animals. Disney is wise to play up that aspect on its box this time around as both the underwater ball and the subsequent island soccer match are the most visually interesting and appealing parts of the film. Adults may find the 1971-vintage mixing of actors and animation a bit creaky, but kids used to a variety of animation quality will find the action a hoot. Ages 4 and up. The movie has been recut several times but was restored to the original length of 139 minutes for its 30th anniversary in 2001. --Kimberly Heinrichs

Chitty Chitty

The gym is a good place to meet and see different kinds of individual. I found this place really amazing because on the spot you can see if the person is just starter or a bodybuilding guru. It's also hilarious to hear someone grunt on the top of his lungs to lift a couple of pounds on dumbbell curl exercise while others relentlessly throw weights around to show others how "intense" their workout is.

Also, I cannot forget those bodybuilding "chitty chats" where the supposedly "gurus" would come in and give their supposedly "wise" advice. One popular argument is on how to build muscles category - "Do I need to do high reps or short reps". To those who are unfamiliar with the bodybuilder's jargons what that means is that "in order for me to gain lean muscle, do I need to do higher/ more repetition of an exercise or low repetition?"

Unclear? I understand let me give you an example, in every exercise say a bench press, one rep is equivalent to one cycle of the weight going down and up. Many bodybuilders are going nuts over the number of repetitions you must do in order to gain muscle fast. Some stick to higher repetitions, while some prefer low repetition count.

I say, there is not much difference between the two. Especially for those who are new to bodybuilding. You see, your muscles grow as a sign of "adaptation" with the level of stress you give to it. If it is the first time you curl a 20lb dumbbell and you have a hard time doing it, your body reacts. You get sore the next day and days after. All that time, your body recuperates/ heals the damage done by that activity making your muscle stronger and adapt to the stress (20lb curl) you exposed it to.

Thus, if you're just starting out in the gym and wonders "Do I need to do high or low reps". The answer is: it doesn't matter. Because your body doesn't know if it is high or low repetitions anyway, what it knows is if the amount of stress is greater than what it is used to.

Some newbie bodybuilders are proud to say they gain muscle due to employing high repetition exercises and some may argue that they gain lean mass by using low repetition exercise. The fact is, both of them are correct. Since high or low repetition exercise when starting out in bodybuilding makes no difference at all. It's the amount of stress and intensity of stress via weight training you give to your body. Depending on that stress level, your body reacts with a bigger and stronger muscles to adapt. That's the answer.

This concept can also be applied by intermediate bodybuilders who notice a slight decrease on gaining muscle and/or strength after doing weight training for a period of time. Remember, if it's your first time in the gym and you want to gain muscle, you don't need to worry about the number of repetitions on each exercise. Just lift the weight correctly and safely and you'll be fine.

Electrical training courses could unlock variety of work opportunities

Tradespersons who have taken electrician training courses could find themselves in demand throughout a large variety of industries, if reports from the Mirror are anything to go by.

According to the publication, Rich Mence is currently working as an electrician for the West End production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, having to fix the flying car - and most expensive theatre prop in history - if it breaks down.

In addition, he is in charge of the lighting desk and equipment.

He told the publication that he loves working in such a sociable job.

"Not only do I have to meet and get on with the resident back-stage crews from whichever theatre we're playing in but I'm also spending my nights at a B&B, digs or in a guesthouse complete with landlady," he said.

The newspaper added that theatrical electricians could earn £25,000 a year, which would probably increase with experience.
