For years, animation buffs have waited impatiently for the Warner Bros. cartoons to appear on DVD. The Warner shorts never commanded the budgets and prestige of the Disney and MGM films, and won fewer Oscars than they deserved. But decades after the best ones were created, they remain the quintessential Hollywood cartoons: brash, fast-paced, aggressively funny and uniquely American. Virtually everyone in the U.S. under the age of 60 grew up on these films, in theaters and on TV. The 56 cartoons in the set (out of a studio output of over 1,000) were transferred from good prints--which means the viewer can see dust, scratches, and occasional mistakes by the cel painters. The films are all presented uncut, in defiance of the killjoys who have insisted on censoring alleged "violence" in the versions shown on television. Warner Bros. is obviously testing consumer response with this set. Although the erratic selection includes many classics, purists will argue (correctly) that it offers neither a fair representation of the directors' oeuvres, nor anything approaching a coherent history of the characters or studio style. (Nearly half the films were directed by Chuck Jones; only three are by Bob Clampett, and there's nothing by Tex Avery or Frank Tashlin.) But it seems petty to carp about omissions and biases when the discs offer excellent, uncensored prints of some of the funniest films ever made in the U.S.--or anywhere else. Black Sabbath's first two releases, Black Sabbath and Paranoid, were more than groundbreaking, they were earth-shattering, exposing the public to a brutal new form of noise pollution termed heavy metal. But it was the band's third album, Master of Reality, that cemented the group as blackened wizards of doom and gloom. Just listen to the echoing cough and sludgy guitar riff of the opening track "Sweet Leaf" and compare it to anything that existed at the time. Not only were Black Sabbath heavier than Deep Purple or Vanilla Fudge, they were also more experimental and controversial, exploring themes of darkness, drugs, and depravity that others dared not address. The heaviest and most influential disc of Black Sabbath's career, Master of Reality featured proto-metal sludge like "Children of the Grave" and "After Forever," which served as a blueprint for a legion of musicians including '90s Nirvana, Soundgarden, and Smashing Pumpkins. --Jon Wiederhorn

If you thought periwinkle was only a color, guess again. And while you're guessing, you're ready to play Blue's Clues, the wildly popular Nick Jr. show hosted by Steve Burns. Steve's appeal is that of a cool babysitter who kids adore and parents trust. Wearing his standard khakis and green rugby shirt, Steve sings, dances, and "skadoos" through a computer-generated world of animated objects and colors as yummy as fruit-striped gum. His dog, Blue, leads him in guessing games by leaving pawprints as "clues" that Steve (and viewers) must find and record in their handy-dandy notebook. The show's goal is to promote critical thinking while engaging kids in problem solving. Steve's earnestness adds the chemistry that makes it a hit. "Will you help me?" he asks young viewers with the sincerity of a trusted confidante as he steps up close to the camera, pausing to wait for a reply. Playtime with Periwinkle continues the winning formula with two 25-minute tales. In "Blue's Big Mystery," Steve and Blue find a magic fort in their neighborhood and wonder, Who is the mystery builder? A series of clue-solving questions will promote deductive reasoning and observation skills as young audiences uncover the mystery of Blue's new friend. In the second episode, "Periwinkle Misses His Friend," Blue's new neighbor is homesick for his old friend Plum, until Steve and friends suggest ideas to cheer him up. Steve's younger, and much taller brother is introduced in this pair of episodes, preparing the kids for Joe's eventual taking over of the franchise as Steve heads off to college. (And star-coproducer Steven Burns leaves the blue screen behind for the bright lights of Hollywood.) In "Joe's First Day," Steve follows the clues to find out what Joe (Donovan Patton) will bring for show-and-tell. In "Joe Gets a Clue," the passing of the baton begins as Joe learns the significance of a blue paw print, goes on his first skidoo, and is presented with his very own handy-dandy notebook by Blue. Much is made of the fact that the new notebook is shaped like the thinking chair; look for one in a store near you. Will the kids like Joe as much as their old buddy Steve? Five is the age when the rules of the grown-up world start to seem sensible and less about wrecking everybody's good time, as Big Little Bill reminds us. In four episodes, each one further reinforcing viewers' good taste for having picked up this four-star Bill Cosby creation, the bald, gap-toothed title tike tiptoes into double-digit-age territories. "Big Kid" is short on action but long on love and learning, as Little Bill and great-grandma Alice the Great while away an afternoon practicing big-kid skills. Little Bill is strutting, peacock proud, in his dad's hat and shoes when panic strikes: Will Alice the Great still love him when he's all grown up? In "Just a Baby," Little Bill wants to cozy up to his baby cousin, but he can't get it right--his tweaks are too rough and his songs aren't sung softly enough. Then, in "The Bills Go to Work," Little Bill punches a pretend time card at the Department of Housing, his dad's version of school, where he sharpens pencils, buddies up to the boss, gets funky to the rhythm of the copy machine, and considers calling a meeting on the importance of circle time. "Miss Murray's Wedding" fuels a day of fantasy for the ring-bearing Little Bill, who doffs his signature "B" T-shirt in favor of a tornado--make that a tuxedo--and step-togethers his way down the aisle. Cosby checks in between episodes for a guessing game that's more like a gigglefest, proving he's still fantasy-parent material all these years after Fat Albert. Little Bill's sunniness alone could captivate any kid over 2; he's no wisecracker, never overly clever. How this series snares grown-ups, though, is through music. A jazzy piano tune threading throughout causes instant, toe-tapping cheer in classic Cosby style. --Tammy La Gorce

Like a soda pop left open all night, Bueller seems to have lost its effervescence over time. Sure, Matthew Broderick is still appealing as the perennial truant, Ferris, who fakes his parents out and takes one memorable day off from school. Jeffrey Jones is nasty and scheming as the principal who's out to catch him. Jennifer Grey is winning as Ferris's sister (who ends up making out in the police station with a prophetic vision of Charlie Sheen). But there's a definite sense that this film was of a particular time frame: the '80s. It's still fun, though. There's Ferris singing "Twist and Shout" during a Chicago parade, and a lovely sequence in the Art Institute. But don't get it and expect your kids to love it the way you did.
