Fosse Fosse
List Price: $24.98
Sale Price: $9.79

The 1999 Tony Award winner for Best Musical, Fosse celebrates the work of director-choreographer Bob Fosse, one of Broadway's and film's truly innovative and distinctive talents. While Fosse's protégé Ann Reinking (also the co-choreographer) and frequent collaborator Ben Vereen are the headliners, the dance revue was conceived as an ensemble piece, so the 32-member cast gets plenty of chances to shine. The nearly two-hour performance features re-creations of dazzling numbers from such milestones as Cabaret ("Mein Herr"), Chicago ("Nowadays"), Sweet Charity ("Big Spender"), The Pajama Game ("Steam Heat"), Dancin' ("I Wanna Be a Dancin' Man"), and All That Jazz ("There'll Be Some Changes Made," among others, but not the stunning "On Broadway" sequence). Reinking, Vereen, and another Fosse collaborator, cast member Dana Moore, also share their memories in interview segments. Filmed in live performance, Fosse stands as a memorial to one man's striking vision, an essential record of many classic routines, and simply a whole lot of fun to watch. --David Horiuchi

Recorded live at Broadway's Broadhurst Theater, Ben Vereen and Ann Reinking head a talented ensemble as they salute legendary dancer/choreographer/director Bob Fosse. The innovative moves and physical style that were Fosse trademarks are evident through such pieces as "Life Is Just a Bowl of Cherries," "Big Spender," "Steam Heat," "Who's Sorry Now," "Mr. Bojangles" and others. 118 min. Standard; Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital 5.1, DTS.

Chicago is Mavis Staples' hometown so she is in exceptionally fine spirits on this 2008 live set, her first solo concert recording, at the Windy City's Hideout venue. Backed by a stripped down yet phenomenal three piece band of veterans featuring guitarist Rick Holmstrom, drummer Stephen Hodges and bassist Jeff Turmes along with a trio of backing vocalists, Staples comes to "bring joy, happiness, inspiration and some positive vibrations." Mission accomplished on this hour long set that borrows liberally from her 2007 civil rights oriented album We’ll Never Turn Back, but ups the energy and commitment for the live show. Her group burrows into a deep, dark swamp groove led by Holmstrom's shimmering guitar perfect for Staples' husky, gospel voice to pour into. On "This Little Light" she vocally riffs off the repeated lick, bringing intensity to the song only hinted at in its studio version. She digs back into her catalog to revive the traditional "Wade in the Water," here given a slight funk backbeat and brought to shore by Staples' gutsy, churchy reading. She's practically forced into a closing encore of the Staples Singers' signature tune "I'll Take You There," a sing-along for the audience played against skeletal guitar and enough joyous handclaps to raise the club, and now the listener, a little closer to heaven. -- Hal Horowitz

ER: The Complete First Season ER: The Complete First Season
List Price: $27.96
Sale Price: $12.75

Inspired by creator Michael Crichton's experiences as a medical student in a hospital emergency room, ER quickly became one of the most compelling shows of the 1990s, each episode a whirlwind of intense and involving drama, gritty realism, and offbeat humor. Heading the staff at the inner-city Chicago hospital is Mark Greene (Anthony Edwards), a doctor so good at providing care to the downtrodden, helpless, or just plain quirky patients that his career blossoms even as his personal life crumbles. Greene is the soul of the cast, but the heart is Julianna Margulies's nurse Carol Hathaway. Her character was intended only for the pilot episode, but she ended up capturing viewers with her palpable empathy for patients and her troublesome romance with womanizing pediatrician Doug Ross (George Clooney). The rest of the central cast consisted of compassionate Susan Lewis (Sherry Stringfield), Peter Benton (Eriq Lasalle), whose prodigious talent nearly matches his ambition, and his fresh-faced student, John Carter (Noah Wyle). Other key characters included ER heads Morgenstern and Swift (William H. Macy and Michael Ironside, respectively), overachieving student Deb (Ming Na), who returned later in the show's run, attending physician Angela Hicks (CCH Pounder), and physical therapist Jeanie Boulet (Gloria Rueben). The remarkably strong first season showed off its sharp ensemble cast through a variety of compelling story lines both personal (Carter's conflicts with Benton, Lewis's struggles with her no-account sister, Chloe, played by Kathleen Wilhoite) and professional (a holiday blizzard and especially the harrowing tale of a pregnancy gone bad, "Love's Labor Lost," which won five Emmy Awards). When Carter is pondering whether his future includes the ER, Green jokes, "It's not bad: Stress, late nights, hard work, no pay--it's hard to beat." It's hard to imagine people choosing to work under those conditions, but they do, and in the process these very human people perform superhuman feats as they face life and death as part of their daily jobs. DVD features are fairly generous for a TV series box. There are two commentary tracks on the pilot episode, including one by Crichton, and crew commentaries on "Sleepless in Chicago" and "Love's Labor Lost." A new 39-minute documentary discusses the show's genesis, casting, and the "Chicago hospital drama smackdown" with Chicago Hope through interviews with Crichton, executive producer Steven Spielberg, other crew members, and the principal cast members other than Eriq LaSalle. Also included are a very watchable featurette on the show's realism (ever wonder why Ross is always looking down?) and another on post-production, a list of characters (including patients by episode, but why no actor credits?), three minor deleted scenes, outtakes, and a glossary of frequently used medical terms. Particularly notable is that the episodes are shown in anamorphic widescreen. ER was one of the first network shows broadcast in widescreen, but that was years after these episodes, which are shown in widescreen for the first time. --David Horiuchi

All 25 episodes from the debut season--including the two-part pilot, "Into That Good Night," "Happy New Year," "Motherhood" (directed by Quentin Tarantino), and "Everything Old Is New Again"--are collected in a four-disc set. 19 2/3 hrs. total. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital stereo; Subtitles: French; audio commentary on selected episodes; deleted scenes; outtakes; documentaries; featurettes. **25 episodes on 4 discs. 19 2/3 hrs.**

Effervescent remake of the Japanese film of the same name stars Richard Gere as a married, middle-aged attorney whose mundane life is shaken up when he begins secretly taking dance lessons from sexy instructor Jennifer Lopez. But the jig may be up for Gere when his penchant for ballroom hoofing makes wife Susan Sarandon think he's having an affair. With Stanley Tucci, Bobby Cannavale, Richard Jenkins, Mya. 106 min. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital 5.1, French Dolby Digital 5.1; Subtitles: Spanish; audio commentary; deleted scenes; featurettes; music video.

Something got lost in translation from 1996's critically acclaimed Japanese comedy, but the American remake of Shall We Dance? is not without charms of its own. In being transplanted from Tokyo to Chicago, the original version's subtle humor is shaken out of its cultural context, but this is an otherwise faithful adaptation in which a weary lawyer (Richard Gere) battles his mid-life crisis with ballroom dancing lessons, while his wife (Susan Sarandon) hires a private detective to see if he's cheating. Those expecting a Jennifer Lopez showcase will be disappointed; her role as the melancholy dance instructor keeps the beautifully lovelorn J-Lo on the sidelines, while a cast of standard-issue supporting characters (especially Stanley Tucci's clandestine faux-Latin dance lover) provide a generous dose of Hollywood-ized comic relief. All of this gives Shall We Dance? a polished sheen of mainstream entertainment that many viewers---and especially ballroom dancers--will find delightfully irresistible. --Jeff Shannon

A story of teenage angst; when a shy and rather timid young man, who is constantly bullied in high school by those the school considers "ideal" students, finds security in a group of kids who the school and society consider troublemakers. The plot is set in suburban Chicago during the late 1980s, a time when gangs from the city were starting to spread into the suburbs. Mario is a well-read but socially awkward teenager. After leaving the security of a paraochial school background, he enters his freshman year at a public school. Almost from his first day he is verbally attacked by some of the football players, due to his timidness and out of date clothing. The abuse escalates to other mean acts perpetrated by some of the school's student elite, until by chance he is forced into a fight with his main antagonist. With no chance of victory, help arrives in a way Mario thought was not possible. One the school considers a "problem-student" comes to Mario's aid, and a friendship is formed that will forever change Mario's life.

Chicago Hope

This is such a great video! Not only do I have a heart for the orphan but I just love the way this animated short was made. This powerful three minute video promo for Orphan Sunday shares the story of a young girl waiting in an orphanage, hoping someone will come and choose her. This was a very creative way to promote a cause.

Regardless of your work's artistic quality, the story can help to overcome issues of anatomy, perspective, FX, etc. Of course, most indie animators want something that looks visually stunning and eye-catching. However, many animations have been made with lower quality or simplistic artwork because of time restrictions or budget. These animations were successful in telling a story which still resulted in the desired effect.

Allan Rosenow's artistic direction adds drama to the already heart-breaking subject. In a post, he states that he used Toon Boom Animate for the animations, he painted the backgrounds in Corel Painter, the camera moves and lighting were done in Adobe After Effects and he recorded the music in Logic Express.

I must say that his mastery of these applications is outstanding. As artists and animators, our goal must always be to get projects done. How many of us have unfinished works that we either lost interest in or "we made them too big" to accomplish? This file is short and to the point. I'm sure it still took several hours to complete and a lot of concentration and dedication. This project could be an example to us all.

Hope is Born: Desmond Pringle's Ode to the Election Season

Inspired by this historic election season that has seen the first viable black presidential candidate and a new sense of hope throughout the nation, Chicago-based gospel balladeer Desmond Pringle has released a new single "Hope is Born" as a free mp3 download.

The Gospel balladeer belts out lines from the heart & mind, reflecting not only the hope of the American people, but also the entire world. "So many weary years, silent tears. Now we give up to a great new time of the year... The ceiling has been shattered, millions of pieces have been scattered..." Whomever The people choose to lead them, Desmond sees hope as already being bought to the country: "we've already won, regardless of the outcome." After all, "hope is born, not only in the White House, but in my house."

http://musicdish.net/mp3/DesmondPringle_HopeIsBorn.mp3

Coinciding with the release of the single, Desmond has launched a new blog calling for people to embrace the power of hope to affect their own realities. The blog will serve as a launchpad for people of all stripes to spread the message of hope born out of this election season and beyond.

"The message is simple: that anything is possible to the one who believes! The assignment is to get the message out to as many people as possible. We are intentional about getting the message downloaded in hearts and encoded in minds. Embracing the premise that, 'As a man thinketh in his heart so is he', we are committed to filling the earth with a lot of HOPEFUL people. Desperate days demand us to actively participate rather than passively spectate in life!"

HOPE IS BORN: The Message, The Mission and The Movement
Help spread the message. Visit: http://desmondpringle.blogspot.com/

Desmond Pringle is a passionate vocalist with a unique brand of balladry - and one of the most talented songwriter/producers in gospel music today. Whether delivering his signature-smooth ballads, thought provoking lyrics or energetic choir songs, Desmond has already taken his place among the ranks of great gospel artists of his generation.

Desmond's journey into professional music began in the lead role of the hit gospel musical "A Good Man Is Hard To Find". His portrayal received an NAACP Image Award nomination. The native South Carolinian then relocated to Chicago in 1993 to further develop his musical prowess. His work as a singer/songwriter gained him contributions to award-winning artists including Yolanda Adams, Bishop T. D. Jakes, R. Kelly and The Thompson Community Singers. Add to that-- stellar performances at the Stockholm Gospel Festival and the award as the Best Male Vocalist by the African American Religious Connection. In 1998 his independent release "Psalms, Hymns and Spiritual Songs" grabbed the attention of Chicago radio and led to a deal with Tommy Boy Gospel. "Loyalty" attracted a broad-base, diverse, multicultural audience, and Desmond's first class musical performances won the enthusiastic respect of music lovers and accolades of industry professionals alike.

"Gospel music is a very simple - but powerful vehicle that is able to change hearts", says Desmond. "Sharing my ministry and music with integrity is the most important thing in my life."

What hope is there for the Chicago Bears future?

With no first or second round draft choices in the upcoming draft and a quack at offensive coordinator, are we doomed to settle for mediocrity for the next couple of years. I know there are a lot of talented people who are slated to become free agents but somehow I doubt that they will even reach free agency. We need a whole new o line, new secondary, new offensive coordinator and a solid number 1 reciever. Does anyone see any hope whatsoever? Vikings and Packers fans need not answer this is for Bears fans only.

I'll give you an answer only because I live close to Chicago although I'm not a Bears fan. Your right about the bleak future of the Bears. They gave away too much for Cutler and the coaching is is terrible. They go out and get these washed up players (i.e. Orlando Pace) and expect them to play at their prime. This is the main reason I'm not a Bears fan....They pay WAY TOO MUCH for unproven players, can't coach decent players and love to live in their past glory. The Bears were awesome in 1985 but that's the last time they had that "ol' time swagger". The Bears that played the Colts in the Super Bowl only had a pretty good defense but a real good special teams. The offense was so-so and looking back now, that's still what the Bears believe.....Great defense, so-so offense. There is too much that the Bears need for them to be even close to the playoffs anytime soon. I thing the Lions will will be better before the Bears get better.

New hope for Illinois' mentally ill nursing-home residents
Thousands of psychiatric patients are likely to move out of nursing homes and into community-based settings in the next five years under a landmark legal agreement designed to reshape Illinois' troubled long-term care system. The agreement, expected to be filed Monday in federal court in Chicago , lays out a schedule for state officials to offer approximately 4,500 mentally ill nursing home ...
