The Monkees - Greatest Hits The Monkees - Greatest Hits
List Price: $13.98

No Description Available.Genre: Popular MusicMedia Format: Compact DiskRating: Release Date: 24-OCT-1995

Unless you're a snob, a good Monkees collection belongs on your shelves, not too far from discs by the Turtles, the Lovin' Spoonful, and other avatars of clean, occasionally rocking '60s Top 40 pop. Greatest Hits is a more than generous stack, bringing together not only the obvious megahits ("I'm a Believer," "Pleasant Valley Sunday," the incredibly propulsive "Valleri") but also a number of tunes that had the bad luck to fall on the wrong side of the act's swift rise and fall. Foremost among these is "Porpoise Song," a lyrically incomprehensible Goffin/King stab at psychedelia that's at once a crass cash-in and one of the loveliest, most fragile sounds to emerge from the American hippie dream. --Rickey Wright

American Beauty: Original Motion Picture Score American Beauty: Original Motion Picture Score
List Price: $9.98

We knew Thomas Newman was versatile (he's created gripping soundtracks for everything from The Shawshank Redemption to Desperately Seeking Susan), but his score for American Beauty is simply gorgeous and one of his best. Filled with inventive instrumentation--tablas, bird calls, dulcimer, banjo, ukulele, detuned mandolin, and more--the score varies between highly rhythmic, world-music influenced passages ("Dead Already," "Lunch with the King") and the more subdued ("Mr. Smarty-Man," "American Beauty"). Throughout, Newman's score is inventive and a great complement to the dark comedy's numerous mood swings. The movie's other soundtrack--a collection of memorable alt-rock tracks--gave us just a sampling of this score. Here's the rest. It's short (37 minutes) but sweet. --Jason Verlinde

Mask [VHS] Mask [VHS]
List Price: $9.98
Sale Price: $4.99

Peter Bogdanovich directed this sensitive and moving story about a teenage boy, Rocky (Eric Stoltz), who lives with severe facial deformities and poor prognosis for survival beyond childhood. The film concentrates on that threshold-of-adulthood period familiar to past and present 16-year-olds, folding together common experiences of youth (love, hassles with mom, a desire to travel) with the special burdens endured by the hero. Stoltz, absolutely unrecognizable under lots and lots of prosthetic makeup, is quite good, as are Cher (as Rocky's mother) and Sam Elliott (Rocky's father figure). More than a tearjerker, the film is a genuine celebration of all that is most precious in life, even more to those who have nothing to take for granted. --Tom Keogh

High School Musical 3: Senior Year (Single-Disc Theatrical Version) High School Musical 3: Senior Year (Single-Disc Theatrical Version)
List Price: $19.99
Sale Price: $4.30

High School Musical 3: Senior Year is the third film in Disney's record-smashing series, and the first to debut in theaters rather than on the Disney Channel, and while many of the elements are the same, the film is at times bigger to accommodate the big screen. All the usual characters are back, but not for long: it's senior year, and the classmates are all facing the prospect of leaving East High in separate directions. Troy (Zac Efron) is ready to play hoops at the University of Albuquerque with best friend Chad (Corbin Bleu), but doesn't want to be a thousand miles away from Stanford-bound Gabriella (Vanessa Hudgens). Taylor (Monique Coleman) is headed to Yale, while Sharpay (Ashley Tisdale), brother Ryan (Lucas Grabeel), and the school's pianist-composer Kelsi (Olesya Rulin) are all in the running for a single scholarship to Juilliard. The showcase for them will be Ms. Darbus' new musical, Senior Year, which will recap the academic careers of the students themselves. (So if the original HSM was a retelling of Grease, HSM3 is more A Chorus Line.) There are a few new characters: Sharpay's personal assistant Tiara Gold (Jemma McKenzie-Brown), and Troy's hangers-on, Rocket Man (Matt Prokop) and Donny Dion (Justin Martin), who may give the franchise life beyond its original cast (if they make some headway in the likability department). But it's all about the songs and the dances. Ryan and Sharpay sizzle in a classic-musical tribute "I Want It All"; Troy and Gabriella share a rooftop waltz in "Can I Have This Dance"; and Troy and Chad blow off steam in a salvage yard in "The Boys Are Back." "Now or Never" is this film's "sports song," and Troy and Gabriella have their big duet "Just Wanna Be With You" and their own showcases, in "Scream" and "Walk Away," respectively. If the closing anthem, "High School Musical," seems on the self-congratulatory side, it's a rare misstep in a series that has made a generation of tweens (especially girls) sing and dance and realize they can be whatever they want to be. --David Horiuchi Stills from High School Musical 3: Senior Year (Click for larger image)

CHEERS:COMPLETE FIRST SEASON - DVD Movie

The definition of comfort television is this: You want to go where everybody knows your name. And you're always glad you came. Long one of DVD's most wanted, Cheers is at last open for business in this four-disc set that contains all 22 episodes of the first, and best, season of one of the defining series of the 1980s. Cheers inherited the mantle from Taxi as television's best ensemble-driven workplace comedy. It can be instructive to return to a long-running series' more humble beginnings. While Cheers got drunk on farce in its later seasons, it began life as a much more grounded human comedy. In these inaugural episodes, the action does not stray from the Boston bar owned by Sam Malone, a washed-up baseball player three years sober. The straws that stir the drink are the lineup of MVPs: Nick Colasanto as addled Coach; Rhea Perlman, the Thelma Ritter of her generation, as surly and fertile waitress Carla; George Wendt as quintessential barfly Norm; and John Ratzenberger as Cliff, the bar know-it-all ready with "little-known facts" (and blessedly far from the pathetic blowhard his character would evolve into). Spiking this concoction is the palpable chemistry between Ted Danson's Sam and Shelley Long's Diane Chambers, fledgling waitress and self-described "student of life." The battle lines are drawn in the episode "Sam's Women": He's the "dim ex-baseball player" and she, "the post graduate." But, as Carla so indelicately puts it, they can't "put their glands on hold." In the first blush of lust, they were primetime's most potent mismatched couple until Moonlighting's David and Maddie bantered entendres. Here are little remembered facts: Sam was initially "an astute judge of human character." Guest stars Fred Dryer ("Sam at Eleven") and Julia Duffy ("Any Friend of Diane's") were among those considered for the roles of Sam and Diane. A pre-"Night Court" Harry Anderson stole his scenes in his recurring role as flim-flam man Harry ("Pick a Con...Any Con"). The lack of a commentary track is a disappointment, as are the extras that wouldn't fill a shot glass. Still, Cheers patrons can expect plenty of happy hours with this set. --Donald Liebenson

Sonny & Cher - The Ultimate Collection Sonny & Cher - The Ultimate Collection
List Price: $29.99
Sale Price: $12.99

SONNY & CHER:ULTIMATE COLLECTION - DVD Movie

It's not what you'd call high art, but there are some highly enjoyable moments in this nicely packaged box set, featuring nine complete shows (plus ample bonus material) spread out over three discs. Beginning as a summer replacement in 1971, The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour earned its own regular time slot that same year, running for three straight seasons and then returning in 1976 (as The Sonny & Cher Show), after the couple's divorce. The show's formula, which had already been established both onstage and on the small screen (their '69 pilot episode is among the extra features), includes plenty of music (duets, Cher's solo performances in typically outlandish Bob Mackie gowns, various guest shots); lots of shtick (consisting mostly of Cher's put-downs of the minimally talented but good-natured Sonny); and sketches and skits (ranging from lame to inspired, including a mock-opera based on All in the Family and starring Metropolitan Opera tenor Robert Merrill as a warbling Archie Bunker). Guests range from the obvious (TV stalwarts like Harvey Korman, Ruth Buzzi, and Don Knotts) to the downright weird (then-California governor Ronald Reagan). It's all fairly middlebrow, but Sonny & Cher's unpretentious, unself-conscious charm carries it; and once in a while everything congeals into one surreally entertaining package, like the '72 show featuring the Jackson 5 (led, of course, by Michael, who was then 14 and still apparently normal), who are followed to the stage by Reagan (telling jokes, sort of) and singer-actor Howard Keel, veteran of numerous movie musicals. Bonus features include 2003 audio commentary by a nostalgic Cher, interviews with the producers, the '69 pilot, bios, discographies, and a show history. The DVD set also comes with a music-only CD, featuring live performances of "The Beat Goes On" and "I Got You Babe." --Sam Graham

Your Wedding Is Like Your Very Own Photo Shoot

You're the star of your wedding day, and with that comes an entourage of photographers and videographers bending backwards to get that killer shot. Now that you've hired them, your wedding day photo sessions should make you feel like you've just walked the red carpet. Here's how to get ready for your close-up, and look glamorous on film and video.

Finding The Right Shooter ...

Many couples consider their photographer and videographer among the most important vendors - it's no surprise the wedding details are preserved in your leather bound photo album and wedding DVD. That's not to say your wedding is forgettable, but for most brides it passes in a blur - it's the job of your videographer and photographer to capture the most important events.

You should pick a pro whose style best reflects the look your going for. If you see a lot of photos in the sample albums with shadows under the nose or eyes, run for the hills - the expectation will be less than professional. If you love the way a photographer uses soft light to create a romantic look, you can expect the same sort of quality in your own shots.

The best time to begin looking for your photographer and videographer is as soon as you've picked your wedding date and location. Like most other vendors, the best are often booked months in advance. Here are a few tips to find your perfect pro:

• Take a peek at the photographer and videographer's website for samples and galleries of their work.

• One you've chosen a photographer, ask if he/she can recommend a video professional they've worked with.

• Alternatively, you can work with a studio that offers both photography and video. The benefit - you're guaranteed your photo and video team will be familiar with each other's styles, and will work together to give you the best coverage.

• Agencies representing photographers will match you with a professional suited to the style you want for your wedding. This makes finding your photographer easy. The only downside is you may be left with less one-on-one time beforehand with the person who's actually shooting your wedding.

Important Questions ...

Once you've filtered down your list to a few potential photographers and videographers ask them some essential questions to more about their approach.

• What is the cost of services and what is included in the package?
• What type of equipment do you use?
• If your shooting film, can I purchase the negatives?
• Do you offer raw video footage?
• What types of guarantees and protection do you offer in the event you become sick?
• What are your techniques to get the most out of the subject?

It is also advisable to ask a few more open-ended questions. You'll get a glimpse into his work philosophy for each wedding, and you'll be able to gauge how passionate he is about his craft. Several great questions include:

• What inspired you to get into a career of photography/videography?
• What do you like most about your job?
• Is there a particular shot you love to take at every wedding?
• Has your style changed since you began in the wedding photo/video industry?

Timeline Of A Wedding ...

Another important wedding detail you don't want to miss is how many hours your photo and video team will spend shooting. Plan ahead and make sure they know your schedule before the wedding. Getting-ready shots are often the most intimate and revealing and proper planning will prevent a headache.

Consider capturing some of those movements you normally don't witness on the wedding day. If you plan on having two cameramen (highly recommended better coverage), work with them to make a list of your most anticipated moments. For example, a montage of you and your bridesmaids getting prepared, then edited with shots of your groom and his guys before the ceremony is a true classic. You'll get to see how well (or not so well) he handled his nerves. Other important and touching moments you might potentially miss (unless they're captured on film) are your parent's reactions during your vows, the smiles and laughter during your toast, and your own expressions as you make your grand entrance.

Here are five more glamorous shots worth adding to your album:

• Touching up your lipstick in a mirror before the ceremony.
• Making your grand exit from the ceremony to a cheering crowd of guests.
• Taking a smiling peek back to the camera as you walk away holding hands with your husband.
• Kissing under a golden sunset.
• Kissing in the backseat of your limousine as you depart the reception.

Striking A Pose ...

If your concerned that you sometimes do no good to the camera, don't stress - after having your hair and makeup done, you'll look and feel great. Stay tuned for part 2 as we talk about:

• Getting a perfect album. Tips for a well-balanced photo book.
• Studying your favorite photos.
• Ignoring the camera and getting comfortable with your shooter.
• Film or digital photography.
• Ready for HD Video.

How do I make a professional artistic profile photo for Myspace Music?

Well...I recently created Myspace Music and am trying to promote my music. I also need a preferably artistic photo to put on my profile.

I spent around 5 minutes deciding and came up with this shot.

www.myspace.com/gilbertlam

However I'm not sure it looks too artistic. I've got one in black n White but my backgrounds black n white so there'll be no contrast whatsoever!

Cheers.

do something more sad ...ish.
that always works for an artistic vibe.
i'll even photoshop it for you! just email it to me gall.fran@sbcglobal.net.
