Enemies Of The Dark Knight

With the long running history of The Dark Knight comes a very substantial number of enemies that have become a part of Gotham City's woes. Compiling a complete catalog of them along with their details and secret agendas would be more fitting as a book or novel so, how about taking a short look at some of the most renowned and dangerous characters in Batmans Universe.

Of course the first one to bring up is the Joker. Of every one the villains in the Batman series, The Joker is the most accepted and the most frightening. The Joker, name aside, is not to be taken frivolously. He is a commendable rival of Batman and is exceedingly erratic and perilous. He was played by Jack Nicholson in the 1989 Batman, Nicholsons presentation was said to be Oscar worthy. Later in the most recent Batman film actor Heath Ledger gave the Joker another shot and gave fans and many critics the idea that his performance in The Dark Knight was even Better than Nicholsons.

Next up is The Penguin, given his name because of his appearance and its similarity to that frozen bird that can not fly. With his long, beak-like snout and dumpy body he is a very gross creature. He is, on the other hand, a very sharp man. He sees himself as a 'higher being' but he is also very much of an outcast. In the sixties Batman series he was portrayed by Burgess Meredith but of the actors that have played the role Danny DeVito got it down to a tee in 1992's Batman Returns. While we are on the subject of that motion picture there is also Catwoman to mention. Who could forget Michelle Pfeiffer's sexy slant of the Catwoman? The character had already been played extraordinarily well twenty five years prior by Eartha kitt. Who is the rightful queen of that part is debatable.

Riddle me this Riddle me that is the call of another of Batmans toughest and most memorable criminals. The Riddler is a very clever and complex scientist that was rubbed the wrong way. After completely losing it as Edward Nygma he becomes the Riddler and as his name notes, Riddler leaves riddles or clues as to his crimes. Frank Gorshin portrayed The Riddler in the sixties series and Jim Carrey played as the last Riddler in the Batman Forever Movie.

Our last foe of The Dark Knight is Mister Freeze. His first appearance was in Detective Comics and wasn't really considered a seriously dangerous character. Eventually, he became Mr. Freeze who is a far more dangerous character to Batman. He is a mad scientist who just so happens to have a great understanding of cryonics. To survive anywhere except for a unique refrigeration unit, Mister Freeze is forced to dress in a special suit to keep him sufficiently cold. His suit gives him superhuman strength and he uses weaponry of his own invention that harness cold in destructive ways. In Batman and Robin, Freeze was played by Arnold Schwarzenegger.

So, as you can see, The Dark Knight has his job cut out for him. And remember...these are just a few of many, many more.

The Dark Knight:Should Christopher Nolan's interpretation of Batman include Catwoman, Batgirl, Robin etc?

I just watched it and thought to myself that this is a really stunning portrayal of humanity (America's next top English lit class choice? Oh pretty please....) and all that.

I'd say definitely Robin if he can do it the right way. But i heard him make fun of Robin when asked if Robin was going to appear in the franchise. He said something like sure we're gonna get Frankie Muniz (Malcolm in the Middle).

But I think if it's done right Robin is an awesome character. I was thinking it would be a good stand alone franchise too, if you include all three Robin stories. It could be a great trilogy. Show how Dick goes from Robin to Nightwing. How violent Jason Todd was. And lastly how Tim's deduction skills are as good as or better than Bruce Wayne's. And include you know the philosophy, psychology, and interpersonal relationship between the Robins and the Robins and Batman.

People think Robin is a silly character, but most of those who say that don't read the books. He is a dark character, just as dark as Batman. He adds demensions to Batman and Bruce Wayne that can't be added without him.

Read Frank Miller's recent works on Batman and Robin. It's called "Batman and Robin: The boy wonder." I think it's great, some do not like how Batman is portrayed, but i think it's spot on.
