High Fidelity

Transplanted from England to the not-so-mean streets of Chicago, the screen adaptation of Nick Hornby's cult-classic novel High Fidelity emerges unscathed from its Americanization, idiosyncrasies intact, thanks to John Cusack's inimitable charm and a nimble, nifty screenplay (cowritten by Cusack). Early-thirtysomething Rob Gordon (Cusack) is a slacker who owns a vintage record shop, a massive collection of LPs, and innumerable top-five lists in his head. At the opening of the film, Rob recounts directly to the audience his all-time top-five breakups--which doesn't include his recent falling out with his girlfriend Laura (Iben Hjejle), who has just moved out of their apartment. Thunderstruck and obsessed with Laura's desertion (but loath to admit it), Rob begins a quest to confront the women who instigated the aforementioned top-five breakups to find out just what he did wrong. Low on plot and high on self-discovery, High Fidelity takes a good 30 minutes or so to find its groove (not unlike Cusack's Grosse Pointe Blank), but once it does, it settles into it comfortably and builds a surprisingly touching momentum. Rob is basically a grown-up version of Cusack's character in Say Anything (who was told "Don't be a guy--be a man!"), and if you like Cusack's brand of smart-alecky romanticism, you'll automatically be won over (if you can handle Cusack's almost-nonstop talking to the camera). Still, it's hard not to be moved by Rob's plight. At the beginning of the film he and his coworkers at the record store (played hilariously by Jack Black and Todd Louiso) seem like overgrown boys in their secret clubhouse; by the end, they've grown up considerably, with a clear-eyed view of life. Ably directed by Stephen Frears (Dangerous Liaisons), High Fidelity features a notable supporting cast of the women in Rob's life, including the striking, Danish-born Hjejle, Lisa Bonet as a sultry singer-songwriter, and the triumphant triumvirate of Lili Taylor, Joelle Carter, and Catherine Zeta-Jones as Rob's ex-girlfriends. With brief cameos by Tim Robbins as Laura's new, New Age boyfriend and Bruce Springsteen as himself. --Mark Englehart

Poulenc: Dialogues des Carmélites
List Price: $32.98
Sale Price: $39.50

If there's one reason why Dialogues of the Carmelites had to wait more than 30 years for a new recording, it's because the original one on EMI left nothing to be desired. This one from the Opera de Lyon is just as good, which isn't as faint praise as it sounds. Conductor Kent Nagano projects a special rapport with Poulenc's orchestral palette, giving it a rhythmic vitality and focusing its sense of dramatic purpose, aided by state-of-the-art sound that reveals all sorts of orchestral subtleties. The vocal casting in this story of mass execution among Carmelite nuns feels more international than the original. Despite the presence of Gallic veterans such as Michel Senechal, François le Roux, and the still-commanding Rita Gorr (as the dying mother superior), there's not so much of the characteristic French nasality among familiar voices such as Catherine Dubosc (in the central character of Blanche), José van Dam (as her father), and Rachel Yakar (as the new mother superior). One can't lose with either recording. --David Patrick Stearns

Army Wives: Complete Fourth Season
List Price: $23.99

The Lifetime series Army Wives is one of the most immersive and best-acted dramas on the small screen. Season four of Army Wives shows the characters' growth over what has become an extended war in the Middle East, while spouses back home on the base (actually four wives and one husband) try to navigate the trauma and drama and other tolls that war takes. The cast is uniformly stellar, including Kim Delaney (Claudia Joy), Catherine Bell (Denise), and Sally Pressman (Roxy). The standout couple this season may well be Joan and Roland (the excellent Wendy Davis and Sterling K. Brown), who are struggling with Joan's desire to be redeployed--while Roland struggles to be both mommy and daddy to their little girl. Denise faces a true family crisis when her son, Jeremy (Richard Bryant, a tightly wound coil of pain and anger), comes back from combat forever changed--perhaps dangerously so. The direction and writing are excellent, weaving many story lines together seamlessly and making the viewer eager to tune in episode after episode. The boxed set contains a wealth of extras, including great gags and goofs and many deleted scenes. The best feature, though, is the lengthy featurette called Safety First, which details everything that goes into filming an episode. The location shooting in South Carolina, which lends so much authenticity to each scene, is detailed. And the viewer gets some great inside peeks at the creative process, involving the director, writers, producers, and cast members. Seeing the level of thought and detail that goes into every episode of Army Wives makes a fan appreciate the series all the more. --A.T. Hurley

WHEN IN ROME - DVD Movie
Oh, type-A, über-focused, tightly wound New York Career Girl, will you never learn? Kristen Bell, the growing darling of romantic comedies, crisply portrays the working gal whose life is super organized and rewarding--except for the pesky lack of a real boyfriend. What will it take to loosen her buttoned-down drive and open her heart to a chance at love? Well, when you're as tough a case as Bell's Beth, you're going to need the heavy artillery: Italy. When Beth visits Rome for the wedding of her sister, Joan (Alexis Dziena, Entourage's Ashley), she's suddenly awash in the city's romance. She visits the famous fountain d'amore and retrieves coins from it, hoping for magic. When in Rome succeeds because it allows reality to coexist happily with that magic--which brings forth several potential suitors for Beth. Bell is a delightful actress and brings nuance and depth to a role that's rather two-dimensional. Her suitors include Jon Heder, Danny DeVito, and Josh Duhamel, who plays Nick, a wiseacre hunk with a brain behind that self-effacing nature. When Beth suddenly has five men in love with her--one for each coin--she wonders if Nick's feelings are real, or just the fountain's crazy magic. Duhamel and Bell have an appealing, old-fashioned bantery chemistry, and if the audience knows well before Nick and Beth that they are perfect for each other, well, the journey is pleasant and the leads are engaging. DeVito is hilarious, and other great cameos belong to Anjelica Huston and Peggy Lipton. Fans of films like My Big Fat Greek Wedding, as well as fans of Bell and Duhamel, will have fun When in Rome. --A.T. Hurley

Here are some more information for Catherine Bell:

For many people, the decade of the 1970s is synonymous with the disco scene, with its trademark steady beat, flashing lights, and bell-bottoms. Shiny disco outfits had to attract the right kind of attention, and dominate the glittering dance floor. Few items of clothing are more evocative of this era than gold platform shoes. They were considered a little outrageous at the time, and could add 3-4" of instant look-at-me height advantage.
The sparkle may have been pure disco, but wearing high-bottomed shoes is not a particularly new or cutting-edge fashion concept. Disco simply rediscovered an old favorite. Super-thick shoe soles have been in and out of style for thousands of years, and for widely differing reasons. They existed in China during the Qing dynasty, and similar footwear is still standard costume in Chinese Opera.
One of their first European appearances was in ancient Greek theater, where they were worn to increase the height and emphasize the importance of characters. These were not the glitzy platforms associated with pop stars. They were basically sandals that had cork or wooden soles. Their use became so effective and popular that Roman actors copied them. Eventually, those extra inches became symbolic of nobility.
Not so noble, however, were the courtesans and high-class prostitutes of 16th century Venice, Italy. For them, wearing platforms increased not only height, but elevated one's social position and status as well. Catherine d'Medici was said to have showcased 2" platform heels at her wedding to the Duke of Orleans. As time went by, however, this footwear began to fill a more practical social function. European city streets were still largely unpaved, and could be treacherous with mud and waste. Elevated soles could allow the wearer to rise above this sordid mess, lending an air of unruffled superiority.
In more modern times the platform style has made a couple of notable comeback debuts. The first time was in 1930s pre-world-war Italy. Sanctions against the Mussolini regime made shoe material scarce, so designers used cork, wedged in layers for soles. The idea took off, and eventually made its way to Hollywood. Stars such as Judy Garland helped to popularize the look of cork soles with gold kid straps on top.
While World War II raged, leather was in short supply not only in Europe, but nearly everywhere else. Shoe designers were forced to be more inventive, and used materials such as cellophane or raffia to decorate wartime versions of the platform. After the war, platform shoes were part of the padded shoulder look, and were featured in most respectable department stores. They remained popular until the end of the fifties, twenty years before being resurrected by retro designers.
Today, platform shoes are just another part of a well-rounded fashion scene. Their popular resurgence during the disco and glam-rock years never completely died away, and periodic fashion flare-ups every few years showcase this style, but only as a choice, not as social trend. The outrageous gold platform shoes of the disco era have actually become collector's items, nostalgic symbols of those polyester years.
For every woman, no matter what age or stage in life, there truly is a great pair of Gold platform shoes to assist you in putting your best foot forward for all the important events in your life. Gold platform shoes are fabulous.
