There are a few different ways you can obtain the AC-130 Killstreak in Modern Warfare 2. You can cross your fingers and hope to get it out of one of the random Killstreaks found in a Care Package. This is a tough one to obtain because the percentage chance of getting an AC-130 is reportedly less than 8%. This is many peoples first experience with an AC-130 and it usually is a confusing ordeal with the 3 different guns and aiming strategy required when using it. This is just a taste of how the AC-130 works and what havoc you can wreak with it if you know how to use it.

Alternatively if you are a bit more experienced with Modern Warfare 2 you will have unlocked hopefully the Harrier Killstreak and then finally the AC-130 Killstreak. This is a challenging Killstreak to reach as you must first get seven kills in a row to unlock your Harriers. Then cross your fingers and hide somewhere in the map safely and let your Harrier do your work. Your goal should be to kill at least one or two opponents with your Harrier airstrike by selecting an area of the map to drop the Harrier payload. When your Harrier begins to hover around the map you are going to want to wait for it to lock onto some enemies and use its powerful Gatling gun. If everything goes well and none of the enemy team is quick to pull out the Stinger missiles you should be at 11 kills in a row. Time to call in the big guns!

At 11 kills in a row you can now finally call in your valuable AC-130. Make sure you are somewhere safe as you will be left vulnerable on the ground while you control the AC-130. The AC-130 comes equipped with 3 powerful weapons. It is armed first with a 105mm cannon, with a very wide blast range but with a slow reload time. This gun mode also affords you the widest visual look of the map so you can find targets with ease. The second weapon on the AC-130 is the 40mm Bofors autocannon which creates smaller blast ranges but you will be able to shoot at a more rapid rate than the 105mm cannon. Finally the third weapon available is the 25mm Gatling gun which requires a more anticipation and timing than the cannons.

Depending on your deathmatch gameplay mode, your strategies might vary slightly when using the AC-130. I will talk about the Team Deathmatch mode and Domination and how I use the AC-130 to my advantage in these game modes. I first use the 105mm cannon and pick the largest cluster of enemies displayed on the map. I aim near the center of most of these enemies as the explosive splash damage requires you not worry too much about accuracy. In Domination modes, I will aim sometimes for the enemies main flag or defend any of my team's flags if I hear they are under attack. Once the 105mm cannon is used, switch immediately to your 40mm cannons. You might be hearing warning signs of incoming anti-aircraft missiles. Use your 40mm cannons and take out any enemies standing in a stationary position as they might be trying to get a lock on. You have a limited amount of time as your AC-130 can only avoid 2 incoming missiles with its defensive flares before being shot down. Remember the splash damage is smaller than the 105 cannon so you will have to be more accurate with your shots. If an enemy is moving across the map you will have to anticipate slightly where they will be and aim ahead of them to land a successful kill. Once your 40mm cannons are used up I will quickly cycle to the Gatling gun to pick off any enemies I have in my targets. The Gatling gun requires the most anticipation so remember to aim ahead of where your opponents are headed. Repeat the above steps until your AC-130 is either shot down or run through its limited time.

One thing that I found extremely helpful in practicing with the AC-130 was playing the Special Ops missions. The mission "Overwatch" allows one player to pilot the AC-130 and one player to play on the ground and advance. This is a wonderful way to understand how to use all 3 different weapon modes effectively. Try this before playing online in a deathmatch game and you will notice the difference. A final tip is you can use the AC-130 to destroy any enemy air support they might of called in.
