VARIOS INTERPRETES CABARET

Cheated out of playing nightclub canary Sally Bowles on Broadway in director Hal Price's Cabaret, Liza Minnelli nevertheless delivered an Oscar-winning star turn in Bob Fosse's cinematic reinvention of the show (which had the good sense to retain perverse imp Joel Grey from the stage production). Although the 1972 film discarded several songs from the original score, the new ones sound even better: Minnelli's breast-beating "Maybe This Time," the sultry "Mein Herr," and the salaciously satirical "Money, Money." By placing almost all the pertinent musical action on the stage of the decadent Kit Kit Club, the Kurt Weill-like compositional nuances and political underpinnings bask in the spotlight...that is, when Minnelli stops eclipsing it with her no-holds-barred performance. --Kurt B. Reighley

This original cast recording of Kander & Ebb's Cabaret is tough to beat: Jill Haworth as Sally Bowles, Joel Grey as the Master of Ceremonies, and Lotte Lenya as Fraulein Schneider all turn in classic performances that set a high-water mark for future reinterpretations. Lenya's "So What?" and "It Couldn't Please Me More" hark back to the dark cabaret work composed by her late husband, Kurt Weill, while other tunes ("Telephone Song," "Two Ladies") are much more upbeat. One of the best surprises found on this version--featuring liner notes by author Ken Mandelbaum--are the four previously unreleased (and fascinating) Kander & Ebb demo cuts and four brief intros for songs. The eight rarities are all low-fidelity but highlight the songwriting process of the pair nicely. --Jason Verlinde

"Put down the knitting, the book and the broom" and snap this one up! Original cast of Jill Haworth as Sally Bowles, Joel Grey as the Master of Ceremonies and Lotte Lenya as Fraulein Schneider. Includes Wilkommen; Telephone Song; Two Ladies; Tomorrow Belongs to Me; Meeskite; Money Song (Sitting Pretty); Married; Cabaret; What Would You Do?, and more! 25 tracks in all.

Winner of eight Academy Awards, including Best Director (Bob Fosse), Best Actress (Liza Minnelli), and Best Supporting Actor (Joel Grey), Cabaret would also have taken Best Picture if it hadn't been competing against The Godfather as the most acclaimed film of 1972. (Francis Ford Coppola would have to wait two years before winning Best Director, for The Godfather, Part II.) Brilliantly adapted from the acclaimed stage production, which was in turn inspired by Christopher Isherwood's Berlin Stories and the play and movie I Am a Camera, this remarkable musical turns the pre-war Berlin of 1931 into a sexually charged haven of decadence. Minnelli commands the screen as nightclub entertainer Sally Bowles, who radiantly goes on with the show as the Nazis rise to power, holding her many male admirers (including Michael York and Helmut Griem) at a distance that keeps her from having to bother with genuinely deep emotions. Joel Grey is the master of ceremonies at the Kit Kat Klub who will guarantee a great show night after night as a way of staving off the inevitable effects of war and dictatorship. They're all living in a morally ambiguous vacuum of desperate anxiety, determined to keep up appearances as the real world--the world outside the comfortable sanctuary of the cabaret--prepares for the nightmarish chaos of war. Director-choreographer Fosse achieves a finely tuned combination of devastating drama and ebullient entertainment, and the result is one of the most substantial screen musicals ever made. --Jeff Shannon

When you are a tall strapping man who dresses like a woman for a living, finding a pair of sexy but durable shoes can be worth your weight in gold. Lola (Chiwetel Ejiofor)--a drag queen also known as Simon--finds her shoe salvation in straight-laced Charlie Price (Joel Edgerton), who has inherited his father's shoe factory. Unable to pay the bills making traditional loafers and wingtips, Charlie agrees to make Lola a pair of kinky boots that turn out to be so fabulous the pair end up going into business together. They face a few obstacles, such as the bawdy union workers who aren't too keen on taking orders from a drag queen who's more of a man than they are. Then there's Charlie's posh real estate girlfriend, who wants to convert the factory into pricey condos. While the movie doesn't provide any real surprises (or even any scenes as suggestive as its title might suggest), the English film (which is loosely based on a true story) is highly entertaining that will delight fans of both comedy and shoes. --Jae-Ha Kim

Cabaret Joel

If you haven’t seen the film Cabaret, stop reading this newsletter, go out immediately and rent it, get home, tell your family you don’t want to be disturbed, put it on, seat in a cozy chair and be prepared for a great trip.

Besides being beautiful and entertaining, it is deeply profound. I will not tell you the story; only that the stories revolve around a cabaret in Berlin, during the 1930’s just before the Nazis take control of Germany.

In the beginning, the MC says that it doesn’t matter if it is cold and ugly outside; inside the cabaret, everything is warm and beautiful ("even the orchestra is beautiful") and the time you spend in it is not a waste, for it will make you forget your harsh pre-war reality. And so the show begins.

The story has many twists and turns (some quite controversial) as the plot develops and at the end, our heroine, Sally Bowles sings the title song, "Cabaret." This song makes an analogy of life being a cabaret; there is no time to lose moping around and being alone. One must come to the cabaret and enjoy music and life.

So you may ask, "Yes?" So what? The idea is to have you think about your own life and how you live it. So here is a series of questions for you to ponder about and decide what is worth keeping and what must go, and, more important, whom to keep and whom to let go.

Do you wake up and immediately give thanks for your life? Or do you wake up and immediately say to yourself: "Oh, no! Not another day!"

Do you look at the people you meet everyday and feel blessed that they are traveling with you through life or you just hate to see them and put up with it because you see no other solution? Do you see your life partner and feel a glow of love towards them or you look at them and ask yourself: "What on earth am I doing with this person? I hate his/her guts!"

Do you think about your family and you like to remember the grand times you spend together and the food you share, and the smiles on their faces or the things you remember are the arguments and ill feelings towards them?

Do you think about your work and you smile thinking how good it is to give your contribution to society in a most perfect way? Does your work look like a lot of fun? Do you perform your tasks with joy? Or do you think how longer it will take for you to find something better that is not so boring and not so exploitative of your time and talents?

Do you think about money and start dreaming about all the good things you can do with it, fulfilling your dreams and giving it to the people and the causes you love? Or do you think about money and remember all your debts and how you hate to pay your bills and how much you lack in life?

And the list of questions goes on and on. You can make up your own. Every situation you see yourself in, think: "How do I feel about this?" Does the answer make you smile or make you frown?

And then you ask yourself: "Does my life feel like I am in a cabaret with beautiful music, entertainment, good company, joy, and laughter or does it look like I am in a spot under the bridge where I need to keep close to the barrel fire so that I can keep myself warm?"

If your answer is the first, you know that the better it gets, the better it gets. If, on the other hand, your answer is the latter, what are you going to do to change it?

It is up to you to decide.

Bistros and Restaurants in Paris France

Gastronomy is taken very seriously in France and with the rich history for fine French cuisine, Paris is a city where you will find some of the Worlds finest chefs serving remarkable cuisine and you will find thousands of cafes and restaurants in Paris alone, ranging from the small bistro such as the Allard Bistro through to exceedingly plush restaurants.

Even at a small traditional restaurant like the Boeuf sur le Toit or at a fancy restaurant setting such as the Train Bleu, the quality of food is of the utmost of importance, but many places have to be booked prior and some require reservations weeks or even months in advance, like the Jules Verne at the Eiffel Tower!

When it comes to the type of cuisine, you have choices from all over the world such as the Blue Elephant which serves Thai dishes in beautiful surroundings, Brazilian food at the Brasil Tropical Cabaret and restaurant, Le Curieux Spaghetti Bar for true Italian delights, or the Tokyo Eat restaurant serving adventurous fusion cuisine.

There is so much variety to tempt your taste buds, yet obviously, it is the French food that really stands out in so many restaurants in Paris and some are in unusual surroundings like L'Atelier de Joel Robuchon, 1970's style Korova, the family restaurant Apollo or Altitude 95 in the Eiffel Tower and they vary in cost from only a few Euros to hundreds per person.

But if you want to splash out for that special occasion, the finest way of dining in Paris is with Haute cuisine, which is elaborate food preparation and presentation, and just some of the Michelin star rated Haute cuisine restaurants include the Le Grande Cascade close to the Longchamps horse racing, Guy Savoy, Taillevent, Le Grand Vefour and La Tour d'Argent, where you could be paying upwards of 250 Euros per person, but even the most expensive restaurants are cheaper for lunch than in the evening.

Now forgetting Haute cuisine, you will find most restaurants in Paris serving French cuisine have a Menu du Jour or a set menu of the day and this normally means the most reasonably priced meals, which change frequently depending upon what fresh produce is available.

Also, if you want to eat breakfast out it is likely to be at a Patisserie or Tea Salon where you can get croissants, bread, fillings like cold meats and cheeses, pastries and a nice cup of coffee and numerous places such as Angelina's or Laduree, offer a choice of eating on the premises, or items to take away, but just one point worth mentioning is that many establishments add an additional charge to your bill if you decide to sit outside on their terrace, rather than inside.

When it comes to lunch, you will be able to find numerous different cafes and bistros whilst walking around Paris such as the Cafe Marly with a great view of the famous Louvre museum, and it may be an idea to mark these on a map so that you can find your next fuelling station!

As for the evening, meals are usually served from around 7.30pm and restaurants get far busier from around 9pm onwards.  Plus we would like to point out that Parisians do tend to dress up for an evening out and in most restaurants it is expected that you have a glass of wine or two with your meal, but bear in mind that a table wine can be just as expensive as many others on the wine list, as they are still of excellent quality.

And numerous different options are available for an evening meal like the cosy intimate setting of Au Bon Accueil, or perhaps you have been to a nightclub and need to eat in the early hours of the morning, then Au Pied de Cochon that is open 24/7 is a good choice, or you could choose the friendly atmosphere and smells of food cooking on a spit at the Atelier Maitre Albert or contemporary cuisine at Spoon Food and Wine, but you also have cabaret venues where you can enjoy a meal and watch a cabaret show such as at the World famous Moulin Rouge.

And after all this eating out in Paris enjoying the fabulous cuisine on offer, it just may not be the same when you get home!
