Snow Patrol are frequently compared to Coldplay in the press, which seems strange as they write far better songs and do not appear to be quite so self-hating, nor as rich. Their delightfully dour little pop songs do touch on the melancholic side of things, but the lyrics are wonderfully slice-of-life descriptions. Singer/lyricist Gary Lightbody gives a shout-out to Sufjan Stevens when on the punchy "Open Your Eyes" he sings, "The anger swells in my guts." Perhaps a better comparison would be American indie-rock act Sebadoh? Regardless, this band continues to surprise. If you went to see this mixed Scottish/Irish group on tour after hearing their wistful, breakout third album Final Straw, you might have been a bit confused by the rock juggernaut confronting you. Eyes Open is their most straightforwardly rock record yet, and thanks in large part to producer Garret Lee, it's their best. If there was ever perfect music to get lost to while driving around confused about a relationship, this is it. --Mike McGonigal

Destined to become a holiday perennial, The Polar Express also heralded a brave new world of all-digital filmmaking. Critics and audiences were divided between those who hailed it as an instant classic that captures the visual splendor and evocative innocence of Chris Van Allsburg's popular children's book, and those who felt that the innovative use of "performance capture"--to accurately translate live performances into all-digital characters--was an eerie and not-quite-lifelike distraction from the story's epic-scale North Pole adventure. In any case it's a benign, kind-hearted celebration of the yuletide spirit, especially for kids who have almost grown out of their need to believe in Santa Claus. Tom Hanks is the nominal "star" who performs five different computer-generated characters, but it's the visuals that steal this show, as director Robert Zemeckis indulges his tireless pursuit of technological innovation. No matter how you respond to the many wonders on display, it's clear that The Polar Express represents a significant milestone in the digital revolution of cinema. If it also fills you with the joy of Christmas (in spite of its Nuremberg-like rally of frantic elves), so much the better. --Jeff Shannon The World of The Polar Express The book by Chris Van Allsburg The Soundtrack The Magic Journey (Polar Express the Movie) (book) Stills from Polar Express (click for larger image)
Co-written and directed by Robert Zemeckis, this heartwarming computer-animated holiday tale, based on Chris Van Allsburg's book, centers on a young boy whose belief in Santa Claus is beginning to waver. Lying awake on Christmas Eve, he hears the rumble of a locomotive outside his home. Boarding the train with a host of other children, he embarks on a thrilling adventure bound for the North Pole. Tom Hanks, Michael Jeter, Nona Gaye, Eddie Deezen, and Peter Scolari provide live-action performances that were later digitized. 100 min. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital 5.1, French Dolby Digital 5.1, Spanish Dolby Digital 5.1; Subtitles: English, French, Spanish.

Cher Living Proof Pop Music CD Review
Living Proof is the latest Pop CD released by the extremely talented Cher who once again has delivered a brilliant collection of tracks. I’m confident Cher fans, and Pop fans alike will be pleased with this one.
Unfortunately, it’s not everyday that I get a CD from an artist that I can just pop in and comfortably listen to from beginning to end. There is usually a song or two that I just can’t force myself to get through. Not at all the case with Living Proof. Every track is enjoyable and was pretty easy for me to listen to from start to finish.
Living Proof has a pleasantly varied, mix of 12 tracks that are very well written songs by this clearly gifted artist. Most of the songs display a lot of the kind emotion that makes for a really great listen. Seemingly drawing from what I can only imagine are her own real life experiences. At different points touching on the most real emotions like love, heartbreak, pain, failed relationships and unattainable romance. They’re all here.
Listen and I think you’ll agree that the song choices are excellent, the production is outstanding and Cher is clearly in top form.
While this entire CD is really very good the truly standout tunes are track 2 - A Different Kind Of Love Song, track 9 - Love Is A Lonely Place Without You, and track 12 - When The Money’s Gone.
My Bonus Pick, and the one that got Sore [...as in "Stuck On REpeat"] is track 1 - Song For The Lonely. Outstanding!

Cher originally released Living Proof on February 26, 2002 on the Warner Bros. Records label.

1. Song For The Lonely 2. Different Kind Of Love Song, A 3. Alive Again 4. Music's No Good Without You, The 5. Rain, Rain 6. Real Love 7. Love So High 8. Body To Body, Heart To Heart 9. Love Is A Lonely Place Without You 10. Love One Another 11. When You Walk Away 12. When The Money's Gone
