Does Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus really mistreat animals?
Went to the circus last week and their were protesters who said they do. Is this true?
Honestly it really depends on who you talk to. There are animal rights people who say 100% yes and there are others who say they do not. I can say that most of the people I have heard argue that they do abuse them have never worked with elephants... so I am not sure how much stock I take in that.
I am sure there are some keepers out there that are more harsh than others but overall I would say no they do not. However, it really is not something I agree with. I do not mind using animals in shows when it allows them to use natural behavior and can be a learning tool for the public... it is just that a circus really does not permit such a thing.
EDIT: yes I do work at a zoo... and actually no I do not work in visitor services... and if you are going to fire me for saying that you are also going to have to fire our director, assistant director, vet, several curators and a headkeeper or two while you are at it
If you also noticed I said that I do not agree with using elephants in the circus, I only said that I do not think the vast majority in those two circus groups are not abused.
