One of the most common complaints about musicals is that the books are flimsy pretexts from which to hang numbers. Wicked runs into the opposite problem: it has a great plot, but too often the songs just get in the way. Based on Gregory Maguire's novel of the same name, Wicked tells us what happened between Glinda the Good and Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, before Dorothy showed up in Oz. And the show is lucky to boast a pair of ace leading women in the main roles. As Glinda, Kristin Chenoweth delivers a sensational star turn, displaying a crystal-pure voice and sharp comic timing; Idina Menzel lends her powerful pipes to the tricky role of Elphaba. Unfortunately, you wish they had better material to work with. Stephen Schwartz's pop score is often dragged down by overly synthetic orchestrations and sentimental lyrics (think Chicken Soup for the Witch). Still, at its best Wicked is a seductive slice of popular entertainment that could well give a younger audience a lasting taste for musical theater. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Seussical: the Musical, which is based on Dr. Seuss's beloved characters, made the news even before its Broadway opening, as tales of disastrous out-of-town tryouts multiplied and creative turmoil abounded. But the show has its fans--Rosie O'Donnell, for one, likes it so much that she jumped in to play the Cat in the Hat for a month while Roger Bart was on vacation. And guess what? As conceived by Ragtime's Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, Seussical isn't nearly as bad as its reputation would suggest. While Junior digs the familiar characters, Mom and Dad will notice that "A Day for the Cat in the Hat" could be an outtake from Cabaret--if that show had been rated G, of course--while "It's Possible" suddenly turns into an Elton John-type romp midway through. Easy on the ear and very pop, this is a kid-friendly cast album that won't insult an adult's intelligence. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

CAMELOT - DVD Movie
A live-on-stage performance filmed for HBO in 1982, Camelot returns Richard Harris to the role he immortalized on film in 1967. Harris replaced the original King Arthur, Richard Burton, in this revival production as it was on its way to New York's Winter Garden Theatre, which turned out to be Harris' only role on the Broadway stage. Fifteen years later, he's an older and wiser Arthur, a little more world-weary but still with a twinkle in his eye. He's paired with Meg Bussert, whose Guinevere is not as beautiful as Vanessa Redgrave in the film, but a better singer and appropriately younger. Bussert, who was Tony-nominated for her role in Brigadoon the year before, sounds eerily like original Broadway star Julie Andrews at times. Richard Muenz (The Most Happy Fella revival) plays Lancelot, Barrie Ingham plays Pellinore, and Richard Backus is Mordred. Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe's score is still a great classic, and here two songs cut from the movie are restored, "Before I Gaze at You Again" and "The Seven Deadly Virtues," but inexplicably cut is "Then You May Take Me to the Fair." Not surprisingly the production has a more stagebound feel compared to the sumptuous feature film, but it's good to have a more faithful version of the show available on DVD. --David Horiuchi

Many of the people who work on Broadway keep scrapbooks of their experiences: photos, signed posters, ticket stubs, and, of course the Playbills. Playbill Books, a division of the iconic 127-year-old company that designs the programs for every show on Broadway, has expanded this idea into an annual project that has become a Broadway institution: The Playbill Broadway Yearbook. Taking the form of a college yearbook, the seventh edition is packed with photos - more than 4,000 of them, many in color - and memorabilia from the entire 2010-2011 Broadway season, including headshots of all the actors, and photos of producers, writers, designers, stage managers, stagehands, musicians - even the ushers! A new feature this year is plot summaries of each of the shows, as well as stats, Playbill covers, and inside stories that only Playbill can get. It includes chapters on nearly 80 Broadway shows - not just new shows such as Spider-man: Turn Off the Dark, Warhorse, The Book of Mormon, and Catch Me If You Can, but also the season's long-running ones, such as Billy Elliot, Mamma Mia! and Wicked. Also included is a wealth of photos from Broadway insider events, including "Gypsy of the Year," "Broadway Bare," and the annual Broadway League softball championship. The authors have once again asked each production to supply a member of the cast or crew to serve as correspondent, to report on things that only those who worked backstage would know: opening night presents, embarrassing moments, memorable ad-libs, who got the Gypsy Robe, daily rituals, celebrity visits, favorite health tips and regimens, and so on. Correspondents range from dressers and stage doormen to stage managers, dancers, featured players, and, in some cases, the star of the show.

How did four blue-collar kids become one of the greatest successes in pop music history? You ask four guys, you get four different answers. Have we got a story for you!Everyone knows their songs. Few know their story. Named for a bowling alley that refused to book them, The Four Seasons—Frankie, Tommy, Bob, and Nick—were four high school dropouts who emerged from New Jersey to become true American Idols: one of the biggest American pop music sensations of all time. With a shiny doo-wop sound highlighted by lead singer Frankie Valli’s stratospheric falsetto, they wrote their own songs, invented their own sounds, and sold 175 million records worldwide—all before they were thirty.Jersey Boys, Broadway’s 2006 Tony Award® Winner for Best Musical, is the electrifying tale of the Seasons’ rise, the moment they established their signature sound with their breakout hit “Sherry”; becoming a sensation on American Bandstand, of being young and full of hope and dreams and promise; of riding the rocket of success against the irresistible pull of the Jersey mob and the old neighborhood. Like the show itself, this gorgeous, full-color companion book captures the magic and the original excitement of the band’s life and times through all-new interviews with the band members. It also features the show’s libretto; interviews with the show’s writers, director, and cast; and over 200 photos from the band members’ personal collections of rarely seen memorabilia. For anyone who's ever sung along or danced to "Oh, What a Night!", “Walk Like a Man” or “Big Girls Don’t Cry”, and for those just discovering the timeless sound of The Four Seasons, Jersey Boys is the ultimate keepsake.

Easy Steps to Have the Best Broadway Vacation
New York City is known for a lot of things, but probably the most notable attraction in the city is Broadway. Broadway is a theater district in the heart of Manhattan that features the best theater productions in the world. Here you will see the most provocative, opulent, avant guard, and touching productions that are out there. However, the perfect Broadway vacation is not just about the shows. It is also about your lodging, the sites of the city, and the restaurants in the area.
Broadway on the Boards
There are always a variety of productions to see on Broadway, but currently there is so much variety to be seen. One of the biggest must see a money maker on Broadway has to be "Wicked". Wicked chronicles the magical land of OZ before Dorothy went to visit, and it seems that OZ is not quite what we may have thought it to be. Filled with breathtaking music, eye popping effects, and gorgeous costumes this show should not be missed.
If you really want a taste of the city then you must check out In The Heights. This Tony award winning musical truly captures the Puerto Rican culture of Brooklyn in both its music and choreography. This production took the theater world by storm, and people are still talking about it.
For those who want to see the ultimate in Broadway spectacle then you must check out Disney's production of Mary Poppins. In this scrumdidliumptious production you will see all of the Disney magic that you have been dreaming of along with beautiful music, rich costumes, and inventive choreography.
Where to Stay
There are a variety of hotels near Broadway. When doing your research for hotels near Broadway you are going to want to look for those that are near the Times Square area which is really the heart of the Broadway district. Most of the hotels in this area feature the historical influence of New York, but there are so more modern feeling choices like the W hotel or the Mariott Marquis.
Where to Get a Bite
The good news is that you will not be at a loss when it comes to cuisine while on your Broadway vacation. The Broadway area is filled with some of the best restaurants in the city in addition to some familiar chains like Sabarro and McDonalds. If you want to take a bit of a walk you may want to walk over to 8th avenue because that is where some of the best restaurants are hidden. It is always a good idea to ask the locals where they like to eat. So if you are at the box office buying tickets for your show you might want to ask the attendant where they would recommend that you eat. Additionally, your playbill will often have advertisements of great places to eat that are around the theater district. Lastly, any of the hotels near Broadway can usually give you some fantastic recommendations since they know the area best.
