That is a great question. In my younger days I helped to make shine in West TN. My job was to stir the mash. It was the smelliest job of all. Shine was made in different grades or passes. The first pass was usually 80 proof. If the driver had a long ways to go it was rendered out two more times at about 180 proof then watered down by the buyer before he sold it for about $2-3 a quart then. It was always tested to see if it would burn. Some bad shine was made using old radiators from cars, and many people died from it.

Yes uncut shine is very powerful, up to 180 proof. A few drinks of it and you could go blind from the coagulation of red blood cells that couldn't pass through the tiny corpuscles of the eyes or brain. (This is what makes you drunk, by cutting off the oxygen supply.) It's the same today of store bought liquor and how you get drunk and loose brain cells in doing so.

If you want to try the same thing as shine, just go to the liquor store and get some 180 proof grain alcohol. It's safer than shine and tastes and burns the same.
