Ballet Russe

Dancing on the toes or ballet on point began around the beginning of the 1800s, though only brief time was spent on the toes. Ballet shoes were reinforced with extra stitching around the toe, though were not nearly as supportive as pointe shoes today.

The romantic period of the early to mid 1800s was dominated by female dancers and gave us the well known ballets Giselle and Coppelia. It was also the founding period of the white tutu that is now so strongly affiliated with ballet dancing and seeing ballerinas performing ballet on point.

Ballet in France was declining by this period, though in Denmark, August Bournonville (1805 - 1879) the Danish ballet master and choreographer was gaining acclaim for his equal use of both male and female dancers. His ballets, including La Sylphide, are still performed today.

During the late 1800s, Russian ballet was flourishing. Chief choreographer of the Imperial Russian Ballet Marius Petipa (1818 - 1910) commissioned Tchaikovsky to compose the scores for Sleeping Beauty and Swan Lake. He is best known for the full-length story ballet combining set dances with mimed scenes.

Ballet on Point in the Twentieth Century

In 1909, founder of the Ballet Russes, Sergei Diaghilev (1872 - 1929) was invited to bring his ballet to Paris. His company included Anna Pavlova and the show was immensely successful, bringing ballet back into fashion in France. The Ballet Russes developed a style that made ballet more popular with the general public, where previously it had been enjoyed solely by aristocracy.

During the 1920s and 1930s modern dance was developing throughout America and Germany. Dances were more reflective of modern life and more expressive movement styles were incorporated.

From the 1960s, ballet became admired for its athleticism and skill. Ballet today is enjoyed by many and incorporates an amalgamation of classical and modern dances that are appreciated for the expressive art form that began several centuries earlier.

To learn more about ballet on point either as an interest or because you or a family member are starting to learn ballet I would recommend this site below.

Have a look and I think you will enjoy the detail of what the site has to offer.

It has videos to show a variety of pre pointe exercises for ballet on point. I highly recommend it. http://www.perfectpointe.info

Ana Tzarev Galleryartist Ana Tzarev Presents: Homage To Diaghilev’S Enduring Legacy: Rediscovered Gems Of The 20Th Century

September 16, 2009, New York City: The Ana Tzarev Gallery (http:/www.anatzarev.com) is celebrating the 100th Anniversary of Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes in conjunction with the Russian American Cultural Center (RACC) with a remarkable new exhibition featuring stage design by Russian artists of the 1920’s through the 1960’s who carried on Diaghilev’s legacy by bringing cutting edge art into the theatre.  Theatrical design is a vital Russian art form, and until now has been largely underrepresented in part because these designs are often carried out in “light media”, such as watercolor or gouache on paper. This exhibition is important in that it draws attention to the significant role that stage design and Russian stage design in particular, played in the development of twentieth century art.

This exhibition is the culmination of extensive research on the works by Dr. Regina Khidekel, the Executive Director and Curator of The Russian American Cultural Center (RACC) who curated and catalogued it.  The exhibition introduces names of forgotten artists whose works have been rescued from obscurity, despite their tremendous impact on Russian and modern art.

The exhibition also includes works by some of the best known Russian artists of that era such as Nicolas Roerikh whose designs epitomize Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes, particularly one of the ballet’s greatest achievements The Rite of Spring (1913), as well as works by Pavel Tchelitchew who was known as one of the most innovative designers of the Ballets Russes.

Sergey Diaghilev was the driving creative mind behind the Ballets Russes (1909-1929), the first international performing company whose sets were designed by artists, primarily the most innovative Russian and international artists of his day. Diaghilev was a visionary and innovator, who always set his sights on the cutting edge of the art world. By integrating fine art, music, dance, and theater, he raised theater to a new creative and artistic level.

The Ballets Russes attained an unprecedented level of success and influence throughout the world and is recognized as one of the first signs of the new age of cultural globalization. It was Diaghilev who first introduced Russia as a major player in the greater art world, and that exposure opened new windows of expression for Russian artists.

The 72 page exhibition catalogue is available for purchase at the Ana Tzarev Gallery.

Is the smallest size for ballet flats size 6? It seems like my foot won't fit any flats! PLEASE HELP?!?!?

i've been to the mall 3 days this week consecutively looking for flats. I always find these cute ones but they don't have them in size 6 or any smaller. I find some but I dont really like them but they have my size. sometimes even those size 6's dont fit me. I dont think they get any smaller do they? The size 6's fit the top half of my foot but the back part won't fill up the entire shoe. Is my foot abnormal or what? I've been to Aldo Shoes, Bakers, Sidecca, Wet Seal, Anchor Blue, Charlotte Russe, Cathy Jean, almost every store at my mall but I can't find any. Reccomend any? Is target any good?

I just want flats that are plain, small details like small bow.All I really want is like a white ballet flat because it matches well with any outfit! But if you see any other cute ones, send pics & url ! Oh, and I need them under $40. Here's one I like: http://www.stevemadden.com/item_image.asp?id=12443
