What's up, Doc? Well, how about a four-disc boxed set packed with 56 of the funniest cartoons in Warner Bros. history? Get ready to laugh yourself silly with salutes to Bugs Bunny ("Baseball Bugs," "Long-Haired Hare," "Wabbit Twouble," "The Rabbit of Seville," and more); Daffy Duck and Porky Pig ("Duck Amuck," "Dough for the Do-Do," "Scaredy Cat," "Duck Dodgers in the 24 1/2th Century," and more); and other toon faves ("Elmer's Candid Camera," "Fast and Furry-ous," "For Scent-imental Reasons," "Speedy Gonzales," "The Foghorn Leghorn," "Devil May Hare," and more). 6 3/4 hrs. total. Standard; Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital mono, French Dolby Digital mono; Subtitles: English, French, Spanish; audio commentary; documentaries; featurette; more. NOTE: This set includes all 28 shorts from "Premiere Collection, Vol. 1."
For years, animation buffs have waited impatiently for the Warner Bros. cartoons to appear on DVD. The Warner shorts never commanded the budgets and prestige of the Disney and MGM films, and won fewer Oscars than they deserved. But decades after the best ones were created, they remain the quintessential Hollywood cartoons: brash, fast-paced, aggressively funny and uniquely American. Virtually everyone in the U.S. under the age of 60 grew up on these films, in theaters and on TV. The 56 cartoons in the set (out of a studio output of over 1,000) were transferred from good prints--which means the viewer can see dust, scratches, and occasional mistakes by the cel painters. The films are all presented uncut, in defiance of the killjoys who have insisted on censoring alleged "violence" in the versions shown on television. Warner Bros. is obviously testing consumer response with this set. Although the erratic selection includes many classics, purists will argue (correctly) that it offers neither a fair representation of the directors' oeuvres, nor anything approaching a coherent history of the characters or studio style. (Nearly half the films were directed by Chuck Jones; only three are by Bob Clampett, and there's nothing by Tex Avery or Frank Tashlin.) But it seems petty to carp about omissions and biases when the discs offer excellent, uncensored prints of some of the funniest films ever made in the U.S.--or anywhere else. (Rated G, suitable for all ages: cartoon violence) --Charles Solomon

Velvet Underground & Nico

When the Velvets recorded this debut, they were best known as the protégés of Andy Warhol (who designed the sleeve), and as a grating, combustive live band. Fueled by drummer Moe Tucker's no-nonsense wham and John Cale's howling viola, some of the straight-up rock & roll and arty noise extravaganzas here bear that out. But before Lou Reed was singing about sadomasochism and drug deals and writing lyrics inspired by his favorite poets, he was a pop songwriter, and this album has some of his prettiest tunes, mostly sung by Nico, the German dark angel who left the band after this disc. Even the sordid rockers are underscored by graceful pop tricks, like the two-chord flutter at the center of the classic "Heroin." --Douglas Wolk

Pure Cult

The hard-rocking Cult have come along way from the early Native American stylings of Dreamtime and the dodgy goth tendencies evident on their classic album, Love. Blame Rick Rubin, who helmed Electric and steered them down the rocky road to metal heaven. This best-of collection brings together tracks from the span of their career, and is a worthy testament to their rites of passage. "She Sells Sanctuary" sounds as refreshing as it did in 1985. There are some dubious inclusions from the twilight years of their career, such as "Star" and "Coming Down (Drug Tongue)," but when they have to hold their own alongside "Fire Woman" and "Lil' Devil" it's hardly surprising that they are found wanting. --Helen Marquis

The doggone funniest love story you'll ever see, this charming Disney animated feature follows the rocky romance between a proper cocker spaniel and a streetwise mutt from opposite sides of the tracks. Features the voice talents of Peggy Lee, Barbara Luddy, Larry Roberts, Stan Freberg, and Alan Reed. Songs include "Bella Notte ," "He's a Tramp," "The Siamese Cat Song." 76 min. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtracks: English DTS HD 7.1 Master Audio, Dolby Digital stereo, French Dolby Digital 5.1, Spanish Dolby Digital 5.1; Subtitles: English (SDH), French, Spanish; deleted scenes; featurettes; "making of" documentary. Also includes a DVD version of the film. Two-disc set.
It's still one of the sweetest kisses onscreen, up there with Bergman and Grant, Bogey and Bacall: the moment when pampered purebred Lady and streetwise mongrel Tramp, sharing a moonlit plate of spaghetti in an alley behind an Italian café, unknowingly slurp the same strand, and suddenly find their mouths meeting in surprise and tenderness. Ah, puppy love. Lady and the Tramp is a delight of animation and surprisingly deep character development, given that the stars are all dogs. Lady, an adorable Cocker Spaniel, feels neglected when her owners become distracted by the pending birth of a baby. But the last straw is clueless Aunt Sarah's appearance with her conniving Siamese cats (among Disney's most creatively evil villains), who wreak havoc on Lady's blissful home life. Soon Lady is off on an adventure in the streets, where the savvy Tramp takes her under his paw. The lessons of friendship and loyalty, of integrity--not to mention trusting in the kindness of strangers--ring true to delighted children and adults alike. And unlike many Disney films, there's no real violence, only challenges that smart dogs (including a tough-talking vamp named Peg, voiced sublimely by Peggy Lee, who also wrote the songs), banding together, can tackle. The animation is terrific; the scene where we first meet Tramp shows him rinsing off under a pipe, and his subsequent shaking-off of the water follows the detailed rippling up and down his back that any dog lover will recognize. And is there any song more romantic than "Bella Notte"? Bellissima! --A.T. Hurley

Even though one can view each segment of Krzysztof Kieslowski's Three Colors trilogy on its own, it seems absurd to do so; why buy the slacks instead of the entire suit? Created by Kieslowski and his writing partner Krzysztof Piesiewicz for France's bicentennial, the titles--and the themes of the films--come from the three colors of the French flag representing liberty, equality, and fraternity. Blue examines liberation through the eyes of a woman (Juliette Binoche) who loses her husband and daughter in an auto accident, and solemnly starts anew. White is an ironic comedy about a befuddled Polish husband (Zbigniew Zamachowski) who takes an odd path of revenge against his ex-wife (Julie Delpy). A Swiss model (Irène Jacob) strikes up a friendship with a retired judge (Jean-Louis Trintignant) who eavesdrops on his neighbors in Red. The trilogy is a snapshot of European life at a time of reconstruction after the Cold War, reflected through Kieslowski's moralist view of human nature and illumined by each title's palate color. The DVD set has numerous extras spread throughout the three discs; the end result is a superior collection. Each disc has a short retrospective, culled together from new interviews with Kieslowski's crew, plus film critic Geoff Andrew, biographer Annette Insdorf (who also does the commentaries), and fellow Polish director Ageniska Holland. Producer Marin Karmitz also reminisces about the experience. There's an exceptional effort to show the magic of Kieslowski (who died two years after the trilogy) through a discussion of his various career phases, interviews with the three lead actresses, four student films, and archival materials including simple--and wonderful--glimpses of the director at work. Excellent insight is also provided by Dominique Rabourdin's filmed "cinema lessons" with Kieslowski. Without viewing any of his other films, this set illustrates the uniqueness of Kieslowski. --Doug Thomas
In "Blue" (1993), the initial entry of the "Three Colors Trilogy" by Krzysztof Kieslowski, Juliette Binoche portrays a woman who loses her husband and daughter in a car accident and severs all ties to her past. With her new, anonymous persona, she investigates her husband's secret life. Next, a Polish hairdresser's life crumbles when his French wife divorces him because he can't satisfy her sexually, in "White" (1993), the second film in Kieslowski's series. Julie Delpy, Zbigniew Zamachowski star. The final "Three Colors" film, "Red" (1994), focuses on an elderly judge who becomes romantically involved with a beautiful model he's been eavesdropping on over the phone. Irene Jacob, Jean-Louis Trintignant, and Frederique Feder star. 4 3/4 hrs. total on three discs. Widescreen; Soundtrack: French and Polish DTS HD stereo Surround Master Audio; Subtitles: English; audio commentary; documentaries; featurettes; interviews; theatrical trailers; bonus shorts "The Tram" (1966), "The Face" (1966), "Seven Women of Different Ages" (1978), "Talking Heads" (1980); booklet; more. In French and Polish with English subtitles.

The Fox and the Hound marked the last collaboration between Disney's older artists, including three of the "Nine Old Men" (Frank Thomas, Ollie Johnston, and Woolie Reitherman), and the young animators who would make the record-breaking films of the '90s. Based on a book by Daniel P. Mannix, the film tells the story of a bloodhound puppy and a fox kit who begin as friends but are forced to become enemies. Tod and Copper barely establish their friendship before Copper begins his training as hunting dog. Unfortunately, neither character develops much of a personality, which makes it difficult to care about them. The screen comes alive near end of the film, when Tod and Copper have to join forces to fight off an enormous bear. It had been years since Disney produced a sequence with this kind of feral power--and years would pass before they surpassed it. The Fox and the Hound ranks as one of the studio's lesser efforts, but it suggests that better films were soon to follow. (Ages 5 and older) --Charles Solomon

How do I restore an old Art print with water stains?
I was given an old Art Print that I would like to reframe and remove water stainsfrom the surface, Can any one help me?
Here is a different idea, just in case.....
It may be worth scanning it in colour (or getting it scanned commercially). Then the image could be manipulated on computer using a graphics program.
Then the cleaned-up image could be printed and framed.
Alternatively, you might need to contact a museum and/or an art conservation professional.
