When you have decided to join the US Army, there are several things you can do to make the transition easier.

The first step is to begin a physical training program. Life will be much less painful if you are already in some sort of condition. An exercise program that works the whole body is best, and it is probably best to emphasize endurance over raw strength. The simplest method is to practice push-ups, sit-ups, run for two to five miles and perhaps practice some marches while carrying about a third of your body weight. Care must be taken to practice safety. If possible, consult with a physician or an expert who can help you achieve best results without injuring yourself, and life will be much simpler if you can practice the standards the Army will demand. The more time this has to work before you join, the more effective this will be. Standards vary due to age and sex, but plan on reaching fifty push-ups and sit-ups and a two-mile run in less than fourteen minutes. You’ll do better than that by the time you complete basic.

Another important step is to prepare your affairs. When you join, you will be treated as a recruit and will spend a period of time in basic training. You will not normally have contact with the outside world on a regular basis during this period and ensuring that your bills are handled, your friends and family know you will only be able to reach them when permitted will prevent much heartache. Some will also find it valuable to learn to live without their normal vices. Learning how to live without a music system, computer, telephone, books or whatever else will happen in basic, if not before.

You will be expected to learn a great deal. While some of this will be job specific, and some will be difficult to research if you can’t talk to a veteran, there is much else which you will be expected to know which you can find beforehand, and knowing such information will be of potential value as it will allow you to study on other information when time permits, or even maximize rest periods.

Naturally, talking to a veteran is one of the most effective methods to prepare. Someone you trust who can tell you stories and answer questions is a valuable resource to exploit. More recent experience is more applicable, as many details change over the years, but even a veteran of World War II can talk of the standards of military life like making a bunk, cleaning a latrine, talking to sergeants and many other valuable skills and techniques.

Some of what you will have to do will be terribly exciting. Sitting in the doors of a helicopter, flying fast and low, looking up at trees is as exciting as anything you can do. Others are horribly boring and perhaps even demeaning. A wise man told me that if there is any skill which is characteristic of a soldier, it is picking up trash.

Army Renews Its Covenant With Army Families

The Army Family Covenant was officially re-signed at Fort Stewart in Georgia this past November. Army leaders re-signed the important agreement between leadership and Army families one year after it was implemented.

Army Family Covenant recognizes the many sacrifices made by Army Families during this time of war and pledges to help Army families in a variety of ways, including increased child and health care opportunities, as well as real efforts to increase the career and educational opportunities for all members of the Army family, and the Army spouse in particular.  

During the signing ceremony Army leaders said that the re-signing was a declaration of the importance the Army continues to place on families. The officers present emphasized that although they were not present at last year’s signing, the Army’s commitment to Army families is strong. 

"Just because the first folks who signed (the Army Family Covenant) have left does not mean there's any less energy or desire to see this come to fruition," Major General Cucolo said during opening remarks before the signing. "The team that signed this might have changed, but the commitment is the same. We're here today to re-affirm that commitment."

The Army Covenant includes:
• Soldiers (Active Duty, Army National Guard and Army Reserve) 
• Dept. of the Army Civilians 
• Retirees 
• Vets 
• Army families and their kids 
• Survivors 
Among other things, the Army Covenant pledges the Army will:
• Make sure to fund existing family programs and services 
• Ensure that health care is better and that its easier to access
• Improve the housing condition for Soldiers and their families
• Make excellence in schools, youth services, and child care a priority 
• Expand career and education opportunities for Army spouses and their children. 

In addition to this important initiative, Army spouses and Soldiers also benefit from an existing benefit – Army Tuition Assistance (TA) – which provides Soldiers up to $4,500 a year in education funds for training and classes at accredited vocational schools, community colleges and universities.

The benefit is one that Soldiers have earned through their service, and each year it renews providing Soldiers with a brand new “bucket” of education funds. 
Many schools are making Army Tuition Assistance more valuable by offering military spouse scholarships and discounts to Army spouses when a Soldier enrolls using TA funds.

For Army spouses busy with family and community responsibilities, one great option for enrolling in a career training program is 100% online education; this means that as long as a spouse has access to a computer and the Internet – they can train for a new career without leaving the home.

Army spouses can study while their children are napping or they can work at night after the children have gone to bed. Online education means that Army spouses do not have to commute to class, fill their car with extra gas, find babysitters or compete for campus parking spots. When they want to study, they just power up their computers and “go to class.”

Dad's Army statue set to be unveiled in Thetford
D-Day will arrive in Thetford when a much anticipated Dad's Army statue is unveiled in the town centre. The Friends of Dad's Army Museum launched an appeal two years ago to create a bronze statue of Captain Mainwaring to celebrate the town's connection with the famous television sitcom.
