Joel Grey is a Living New York Landmark, an honor bestowed upon him in 1993 by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis for the Municipal Arts Society. During his career of more than 50 years, the legendary song and dance man has made headlines on Broadway and in television and film. What better choice to headline George Mason University's annual benefit, Arts by George, than this celebrated winner of a Tony Award, an Academy Award, a Golden Globe and the British Academy Award for his portrayal of the evil Emcee in "Cabaret." And that role is merely one of his many accomplishments.

Grey has been performing since mounting the stage at the age of nine in his hometown of Cleveland, the son of Mickey Katz, a popular Yiddish comedian. Following his New York debut at the Copacabana, he appeared Off-Broadway before moving to Broadway itself as a replacement in Neil Simon's "Come Blow Your Horn."

Upon catching Grey in "Stop The World I Want to Get Off" at a Connecticut theater - a role he later played on Broadway, succeeding Anthony Newley - producer Hal Prince chose him for "Cabaret, convinced that Grey's portrayal of a sort of clown character made him well suited for the Emcee. Before going into rehearsal, Grey did intensive research about that era in Germany, "because that's what actors do." Knowing the heart of a character is of primary importance to him.

After walking off with awards for both Broadway and Hollywood versions of "Cabaret," Grey played the title role in "George M!" for which he received a Tony nomination, as he did in the subsequent productions of "Goodtime Charley" and "The Grand Tour." He also reprised the role of Emcee in the Broadway revival of "Cabaret," received a Drama Desk Award for playing Roxie Hart's husband in "Chicago,"and was the Wonderful Wizard of Oz in "Wicked."

A television regular since 1956, he has appeared in such hits as "Star Trek: Voyager," "The Outer Limits," "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Law & Order: Criminal Intent," "House" and "Grey's Anatomy." Not the least of his honors is his role as father of Jennifer Grey, star of "Dirty Dancing," who follows her muse on this season of TV's "Dancing With The Stars." He is also committed to solving the AIDS crisis. To that end, he is casting for a one-night benefit Oct. 18 at New York's Walter Kerr Theater and tries to be optimistic about finding a cure for the devastating illness that is spreading around the world.

Not only is Grey one of our greatest entertainers celebrated on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, but he is also a professional photographer whose three books reveal his eye for the unique. The most recent, "Images from my Phone," is a collection of shots taken with his Nokia 133. A ventriloquist figure minus a mouth and a toy masked rider, two of the surprising subjects, spoke to him from the window of a store going out of business

His fascination with taking pictures began when his children were born and expanded into collecting other people's works. Seven years ago, a gentleman saw some of his work hanging in his house and out of the blue said, "This is a book." He took the negatives and three months later had done a brilliantly conceived mock-up of a book and found a publisher."

Grey's jam-packed biographical evening at GMU featured his signature songs and routines together with stories about his father and the indelible memories of growing up. Although his father never offered advice, Grey has always aimed to emulate his sound work ethic, powerful commitment to his audience by always being prepared.

Mischief and Fun With Artful Dodger

Ever heard of the artful dodger? The name Artful Dodger has been a name clearly heard from any place. In Walt Disney's 1988 animated feature film version of Oliver Twist, Oliver and Company, the character of the Artful Dodger was changed to a streetwise anthropomorphic mutt simply named Dodger. The voice was provided by musician Billy Joel.

At least two different books about the Major League Baseball club known as the "Dodgers" have used this character's name as a play-on-words for their titles: The Artful Dodgers, edited by Tom Meany; and The Artful Dodger, by Tommy Lasorda with David Fisher. Was it Rory Emerald or Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley who wrote the classic 1971 song, "The Candy Man?"

Second

"The Candy Man" sample (or alternately, "The Candy Man Can") is a song from the 1971 film Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. It was written by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley specifically for the film and does not appear in the original book or the 2005 film adaptation of Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. It was sung by Aubrey Woods, who played Bill the candy store owner in the film.
