Andy Griffith didn't nearly fulfill his full potential as an actor. Andy Taylor was fine, but after that Andy Griffith mostly lacked artistic ambition - except in this 1983 tv movie Murder in Coweta County co-starring Johnny Cash. Cash was the righteous sheriff and Andy Griffith was a rich man who wouldn't think twice about killing one of his share croppers - resulting in this bonfire to burn the body. The basic plastic cover of the magnet really makes this glow shiny and hot like hell fire. I'll just say that this 90 minutes is far more interesting than however many hundred years of Matlock.

Broadcast 1960 through 1968 - Starring Andy Griffith, Don Knotts, Ronny Howard and Frances Bavier - The small town of Mayberry, North Carolina, was home for this very successful and funny sitcom. The stories centered around Sheriff Andy Taylor, a widower with a young son named Opie. Andy's deputy was his cousin Barney Fife, the most inept and hypertense deputy in television history. Andy and Opie lived with Andy's Aunt Bee, a combination housekeeper and foster mother for Opie. With crime practically non-existent, Andy and Barney had plenty of time to become involved in the many funny situations of the citizens of Mayberry. Classic comedy stars Andy Griffith (reprising a role he first played on TV and Broadway) as an oblivious country bumpkin from Georgia who's brimming with pride after being drafted into the U.S. Army Air Corps. However, Griffith's eager efforts soon run him afoul of his commanding officer (Myron McCormick), and he finds himself in endless mishaps along with cohorts Nick Adams, Murray Hamilton, and Don Knotts. 119 min. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital mono; Subtitles: English (SDH), French, Spanish.
Andy Griffith burst to stardom with this surprisingly funny film adaptation of the Broadway comedy (by, of all people, Ira Levin of Rosemary's Baby fame). Griffith plays a hillbilly who is drafted into the army where, among other things, he has to wear shoes regularly for the first time. Griffith brings an engaging glee to the role of this likable bumpkin, whose happy-go-lucky demeanor is impervious to insult. Ask him to clean the latrines and he rigs the toilet seats to stand up and salute. The film follows him through basic training and into the paratroops, where he becomes an unlikely hero. A solid supporting cast includes Griffith's future sidekick, Don Knotts; Nick Adams; and, most notably, the hilariously sullen Myron McCormick. --Marshall Fine

In his Academy Award-winning role, Gary Cooper portrays Alvin York, the real-life quiet, pacifistic Tennessee farmer who went on to become the most decorated hero of World War I, single-handedly securing a German position and taking 132 prisoners. Stirring tale of true heroism also stars Walter Brennan, Ward Bond, Joan Leslie; Howard Hawks directs. 134 min. Standard; Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital mono, French Dolby Digital mono; Subtitles: English, French, Spanish; audio commentary; documentaries; bonus shorts "Porky's Preview" (1941), "Lions for Sale" (1941); theatrical trailers.
Gary Cooper plays Alvin York, the real-life country lad and sharpshooter drafted to fight during World War I but blocked from killing by his pacifist sentiments. Howard Hawks makes a rousing, heroic film out of the tale, and Cooper gives one of his best performances (for which he won an Oscar). The 1941 feature seems as much a valentine to wartime America (and a not-so-subtle piece of propaganda) as anything, with Hawks capturing splendidly shot scenes of life in York's home state of Tennessee, which in turn provide a striking contrast to the battlefield. A key scene in the film, in which York is presented with an argument in favor of killing in war, is still thought provoking. --Tom Keogh

All 32 episodes from the series's debut season--including "The New Housekeeper," "Ellie Comes to Town," "Mayberry Goes Hollywood," "The Beauty Contest," and "Bringing Up Opie"--are featured in a four-disc set. 15 1/4 hrs. total. Standard; Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital stereo. **32 episodes on 4 discs. 15 1/4 hrs.**
Since its network debut in 1960, The Andy Griffith Show has been a viewer favorite thanks to its folksy, nostalgic charm and memorable cast, both of which shine in this set featuring the series' debut season. Originally spun off from an episode of Make Room for Daddy (both series shared producers Sheldon Leonard and Danny Thomas), The Andy Griffith Show centered around the lives of small-town sheriff Andy Taylor (the marvelously dry Griffith), his son Opie (Ron Howard), cousin and deputy Barney Fife (multiple Emmy winner Don Knotts), and the other gentle eccentrics of Mayberry (which was based on Griffith's real hometown). But while other "rural" programs poked fun at its characters (The Real McCoys, The Beverly Hillbillies), The Andy Griffith Show never stooped to stereotypes, preferring instead to draw its humor from the fine writing and cast, which counted Frances Bavier as Aunt Bee, Howard McNear as Floyd the Barber, and Hal Campbell as Mayberry's benevolent drunk, Otis, among the first season ensemble. All 32 episodes (including the epilogues, which are rarely aired in syndication) are compiled on this four-disc set, which regrettably lacks any supplemental features. --Paul Gaita

While wisely rated G for Gross ("Contains immature material not suitable for adults"), Andy Griffiths' very funny debut novel will almost certainly blow away--perhaps literally, stinkingly--anyone of any age who's ever suspected that their backside might be up to something. Translated from the Australian (sold Down Under as "The Day My Bum Went Psycho"), this adventure begins with the nighttime flight of our 12-year-old protagonist Zach's pale little heinie and doesn't let up for over 200 pages--most of which are filled almost exclusively with the word "butt." At first, Zach believes his butt might be leading some sort of minor butt rebellion, but the plot quickly thickens to include a global army of feral butts, the "greatest buttcano in the history of the world," and a head-butt "rearrangement" conspiracy that goes all the way to the... um, bottom. Our well-meaning but naive hero Zach soon gets mixed up with the butt-fighting "B-team" (the Kicker, the Kisser, and the Smacker, who all "love the smell of freshly smacked butt in the morning!"), fires his very first 4502-LL ("The LL stood for Laxative Launcher"), learns how to "butt-hop" ("The average butt has enough gas to propel itself and a rider for twenty minutes...."), and goes on a long, wild chase involving cluster butts, buttcatchers, kamikaze butts, stinkants, and even the fearsome Stenchgantor, "the Great Unwiped Butt." (And that's not even counting all those seagoing butt piranhas and poopoises.) Griffiths surely likes the cheap laughs and doesn't miss a single opportunity for buttly wordplay (from "high-frequency emissions" to the smell-ranking "Rectum scale"), but that doesn't make The Day My Butt Went Psycho any less clever--the fast-moving plot has as many double-crosses as double entendres, and Griffiths weaves in some pretty brilliant ideas. Who knew you could have a death throe scene between a butt and its owner? Also includes a snarky butt glossary in the book's... uh, rear. (Ages 9 to 12) --Paul Hughes

Here are some more information for Andy Griffith:

In "The Andy Griffith Show"--which first aired between 1960 and 1968--Andy Griffith is a widowed sheriff living in the fictional town of Mayberry in North Carolina. It was a very popular show which depicted life in small town America in the 1960s. The only Christmas episode that was ever created for the sitcom was titled "A Christmas Story", and it's a modern-day Scrooge story. The plot of the "A Christmas Story" is explained below.
It's Christmas time and the town of Mayberry has its own version of Ebenezer Scrooge in the form of department store owner Ben Weaver. When Ben catches Sam Muggins with moonshine on Christmas Eve, he demands that Andy arrest him. Andy and his deputy-sheriff--Barney Fife--try to argue that Sam should at least be allowed to spend Christmas with his family. However, Ben is adamant and he insists that Sam be arrested right away; he threatens to report Andy if Sam is released for the holidays.
Since Sam can't go home for Christmas, and Barney will have to stay at the jailhouse and guard the prisoner, therefore missing the festivities at Andy's house, Andy comes up with a plan: they'll take Christmas to the jailhouse. Andy arrests Sam's wife and two children as "accessories before, during, and after the fact", and deputizes his friend Ellie, his young son Opie, and his Aunt Bee to help watch the prisoners.
Everyone is having a great time at the jailhouse, trimming the tree, singing carols, eating turkey, and drinking eggnog. Barney even dresses up as Santa Clause. However, Ben--who keeps spying on them through the windows of the jailhouse--feels miserable that he's missing out on all the Holiday fun. He tries to get himself arrested several times so that he can join in the festivities, but is unsuccessful due to Ellie's misdirected kindness.
Andy finally catches on to what Ben is trying to do, and he drums up charges so that he can arrest him. Ben enters the jailhouse with Andy, carrying a big suitcase filed with gifts from his department store for everyone. He pretends to have put the gifts in the suitcase by mistake, and hands them out gruffly. Aunt Bee serves Ben a plate of food and Ellie gives him some eggnog, and Ben is made to feel welcomed. Just as in the story of the Grinch, Ben's heart grew three sizes that day.

What Andy Griffith Can Teach You About Dog Training
Some people get worried and excited when their dog is off-leash and he's done something that requires you to correct him. Because the owner is both worried and excited, they move fast toward the dog, concerned that the dog might run off before they can correct him. However, if you've done your long-line work properly and you've laid a solid foundation for your off leash training, there really isn't any reason for you to worry that your dog will run off. So, what does this have to do with Andy Griffith, you're probably wondering? Well, if you watch Andy Griffith on television, you'll notice that the old guy always moves slowly and deliberately. He never rushes and he never looks worried. When you go to correct your dog, this is the same kind of attitude you should have. Be like Andy. Andy never gets angry. He never gets emotional. He just calmly and slowly goes about doing what he has to do, in order to reach his goals. Watch Matlock, or the Andy Griffith Show and you'll see what I mean. If you model Andy Griffith's mannerisms when you work with your dog, I can guarantee that your handling skill will increase at a very quick pace.
Dog Freaked Out Over Pinch Collar
Dear Adam:
I tried the pinch collar on my Westie a few days ago and he freaked out. He hated it, would not move and let out a little cry like he was in pain. Now I am afraid to try it again. Could he be too sensitive for this collar? It was not too tight. After his initial reaction, he then began to skulk around next to me. At the time, I was with 2 trainers who teach in a dog training club I joined. They recommended the collar to me. They said he would get used to it. Any advice? Is there a way to ease him into it?
Buster
Dear Buster:
Yes... if you've got it sized correctly, what's happening here is that your dog is manipulating you. He throws a tantrum and YOU RESPONDED TO IT AND STOPPED.
He's training you.
Next time, glue the leash to your belt buckle and just keep walking. Don't jerk it. Don't say anything. Don't coax or baby him. As soon as he learns that you aren't going to stop (may be a bit now that you've already showed him you'll stop) he'll realize that the tantrum doesn't get rewarded and he'll start walking. As soon as he does, PRAISE HIM... BUT CONTINUE WALKING WHILE YOU DO!
That's all for now, folks!

How did the wife of Andy Griffith die, on the Andy Griffith show?
I read this recently in "American Profile"
quote:
"Q What happened to Opie’s mother on The Andy Griffith Show? My friend says she died in childbirth, but I thought she had an accident.
—Sandra Reichman, Lake Wales, Fla.
Although the cause or event was never discussed, it was established that Opie’s mom—Andy Taylor’s wife—was deceased in the 1960 pilot episode when an unsuspecting Mayberry citizen, Mrs. Balford, accidentally steps on Opie’s pet turtle and kills it. Angry and heartbroken, little Opie demands that his sheriff father arrest Mrs. Balford. Trying to soothe his son, Andy gently tells him that sometimes bad, unexpected things happen, using the death of Opie’s mom as an example. This seems to register with Opie—who then asks, “Who stepped on Ma?”
