One of the most important and magical song cycles in contemporary music, Ancient Voices of Children, is the setting of a series of haunting texts by the Spanish poet Federico García Lorca for mezzo-soprano, boy soprano, and chamber orchestra. The piece made a huge impression on audiences at its initial performances. Indeed, this recording became something of a cult phenomenon, much like the Górecki Third Symphony today; and if you weren't around for the initial discovery, now's your chance. Music for a Summer Evening uses essentially the same forces as Bartók's Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion, and creates an evocative, glittering nightscape. Great stuff.--David Hurwitz

Fans of Robert Zemeckis's brilliant special effects, and of Jim Carrey's transformative acting abilities, will be swept away by their collaboration in the stunning A Christmas Carol. Perhaps more surprising is that Charles Dickens purists will also be impressed and captivated by this version of the oft-told tale--which is dark, complex, and in its way, uncompromising. Which is all to say that this Christmas Carol is an instant holiday classic, easily taking its place alongside the Alistair Sim version, the Patrick Stewart version, and even the Mr. Magoo version of the tale of Ebenezer Scrooge and his ultimate holiday redemption. Carrey is dazzling as not only Scrooge, the most miserable, and miserly, man in 19th-century England, but as the Ghosts of Christmases Past, Present, and Future. As with The Polar Express, Zemeckis animates the film over the actors' physical performances onscreen, but here, the emotion is intact--even heightened by the spiffy effects. Joining Carrey in the cast are terrific players, including Gary Oldman (Bob Cratchit, Tiny Tim, and the ghost of Marley), Cary Elwes, Bob Hoskins, and Robin Wright Penn. But the heart of the film is Carrey, whose dramatic acting has shone in films like The Truman Show and Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events. The emotional connection Carrey makes with his characters is what brings Dickens's classic alive--and what connects the viewer with the true spirit of the holidays. "God bless us, every one." --A.T. Hurley

The question facing any viewer of the Japanese CG feature Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children is: do you have to know the games on which it's based in order to understand the film? And the answer is: it certainly helps. But even complete novices (i.e., most parents) in the Final Fantasy world will find some entertainment in its wealth of fantasy-based action, and the animation never fails to astonish. Picking up two years after an epic battle between the forces of good (represented by brooding soldier Cloud) and evil (Cloud's former general, Sephiroth), FFVII opens in the devastated city of Midgard, whose youthful occupants suffer from a ghastly disease known as Geostigma. A trio of brothers arrives with what appears to be a cure for the plague, but their gesture conceals a more sinister purpose: to revive Sephiroth and bring about the end of the world. Cloud and his companions must once again rise to the occasion to stop the siblings and the revived Sephiroth from unleashing total destruction. Complex and self-referential to the point of occasional incomprehension, Final Fantasy VII will definitely be most appreciated by fans of the game series, but if others can look past the numbing dialogue and frenetic action (which is a bit too intense for very young children), the film offers a carefree and action-packed viewing experience. The two-disc set contains the original Japanese language version of the film as well as an English-dubbed edition (Rachel Leigh Cook and Christy Carlson Romano, among others, provide the vocal talent) and a version edited for the Venice Film Festival. A 30-minute featurette that recaps the Final Fantasy story up to VII, as well as a making-of documentary, deleted scenes, and promotions for future Final Fantasy VII games and products round out the extras. --Paul Gaita Stills from Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children (click for larger image)

Even children know that Christmas is much more than a day of opening gifts; it is a full season of festivities, magic, and traditions. One of the most beloved traditions of all is the keeping of an Advent calendar--the process of counting down the days to Christ's birth, one delight at a time. This hanging, cloth calendar has embroidered, numbered pockets for all 24 days. In each pocket someone (an elf, fairy, or angel?) places a soft, fabric-covered symbol of the Nativity--a stuffed donkey or lamb, a richly embroidered wise man, a shining North Star, or the angel, Gabriel. Children will love finding these decorative gifts in the pockets. Or they may enjoy being the deliverers themselves, choosing a symbol for each day of the Advent. This makes a lovely and lasting holiday decoration. --Gail Hudson
Beautifully designed and sure to become part of a family tradition. Complete with Mary, Joseph, and Baby Jesus. Hand-stitched figures help to create the manger scene. Weighs 1.2 lbs.

Here are some more information for Advent Children:

Nowadays, it seems to be like a foreign concept for kids to play outside. Up until around 15 years ago, it was a given that after school, on the weekend, and during school holidays, playing outside is something that all children participated in. But with the advent of personal computers in the home, and with more advanced video games, children found that there was no reason to go outside anymore. Add to this parental concerns about child safety, and now there is a generation of children who suffer from obesity more now than ever in history. There are also children who have poor social and interactive skills. These children who stayed indoors 15 or so years ago are a part of our young work force now. They have poor reasoning skills, poor people skills, and they lack the ability to recognize professional and personal boundaries.
All of these are reasons why children should play outside. First and foremost, playing outside forces children to burn off extra energy and fat. Most children are full of energy, and when they sit in school all day, they build up tension and aggression. Playing outside allows them to have a release for their built up energy, stress, and tension. This way, they will be more relaxed at home, and in class. They will be able to sleep better at night also. Children need an outlet to express their energy that builds up. Parents have outgrown that stage, so they tend to forget that if children can't express or release their energy, they will become frustrated, combative, and develop insomnia.
This leads to another reason why kids should play outside. Kids need to burn off the energy that they develop from eating so much and or eating the wrong types of food products. Growing boys are constantly hungry, and they will eat the most food, and they like to drink lots of fatty, sugary drinks. When they participate in outdoor activities, they get the opportunity to burn off the chemicals that make them prone to behaving hyperactive. Not only this, but fat doesn't get the opportunity to store up in their bodies. Girls like to talk on the phone, watch TV, and chat with other girls on the computer. Girls need to go outside, so that they don't develop issues with obesity. While no parent needs to encourage little girls to diet, they do need to keep a close eye on excessive fat development on their girls and boys.
The final reason why kids should play outside, is because kids learn valuable social skills when they play outside with others. There are certain social and life skills that can't be learned on a video game, or behind a computer screen. These lessons can only take place when kids are interacting with each other, playing games, and meeting new people. Kids learn concepts such as tolerance and acceptance. They also get the opportunity to practice manners. While video games, television shows, and computers are wonderful tools, they were never meant to replace human interactions. Again, there are certain skill sets and life lessons that can only come with interacting and developing with other children and people.

Celebrating Advent
Many families are trying to bring real meaning back into their Christmas holiday. There is so much commercialism today that moms and dads are struggling to grow meaning and appreciation in the hearts of their children regarding Christmas.
Celebrating Advent is a fabulous way to incorporate a tradition based on the real meaning of Christmas along with encouraging excitement, joy and anticipation in your children.
Advent means "coming" or "arrival of something extremely important." So it is a way to celebrate and get ready for Christmas day by remembering Christ's birth.
There are many different ideas and ways to celebrate the Advent Season. It all begins four Sundays before Christmas day and ends on Christmas Eve.
*Make an Advent Wreath - The green wreath is a circle symbolizing life and the candles represents each Sunday until Christmas. Three of the candles should be purple meaning royalty and penitence. One candle will be rose meaning celebration. In the middle of these four candles is a white candle that is saved and lit on Christmas Day. You can pray each week when you light the candles and read from the Bible.
*A Crèche - My sisters does a version of this by having a nativity scene that "travels" every day of Advent to the stable. Her boys get so enthusiastic about looking around the house to see where Mary and Joseph are as they draw closer to the Nativity Stable. On Christmas Day they place Jesus in the manger and the scene is complete.
*An Advent Prayer Chain or Scripture Chain - Use construction paper and either write prayer requests or Scripture verses on each piece of the chain. Go through each one together as a family until Christmas.
*Have a Family Blessings Jar - Each person in the family writes something they are thankful for every day during Advent. On Christmas Day you can gather as a family and empty out the jar reading them all together as a family and thanking Jesus for your blessings.
*An Advent Calendar - This can be the kind that has chocolate behind the doors or as mine does, a tiny Nativity ornament. Each day I have my children take turns opening the tiny door and discovering what is behind it as they hang it on the hooks above and slowly make the Nativity scene complete. There is a corresponding Bible Verse we read each day also.
Don't forget that there are other fun Advent activities you can do during this time like making Advent cookies, giving gifts to the needy, or having a "Jesse Tree" where one ornament is hung each day during Advent.
Whether your family chooses to use one or all of these ideas, I pray that this simple but meaningful tradition will become a special time together as a family in your home as you "Count - Down" to Christmas.
