Escape from Monkey Island Escape from Monkey Island
List Price: $48.99
Sale Price: $39.95

LucasArts' Monkey Island adventure game series has been missed of late. It has been too long since we've visited the anachronistic Tri-Island area in a Monkey game stuffed with vivid characters, zany plot twists, and liberal use of awful and awfully funny puns. Thank goodness that the clumsy, bumbling, and utterly charming pirate hero Guybrush Threepwood returns in Escape from Monkey Island. Luckily for him so does his bride, Elaine Marley Threepwood; unluckily, it looks like the stubborn ghost pirate LeChuck may be back as well. Or is he? We'd tell you but that would give away too much of the vibrant and hilarious story line. This is adventure gaming at its very best: sharp graphics, excellent voice acting and writing, and solid puzzles throughout. LucasArts even included a walk-through that'll get any new players into the right mindset to solve the bizarre, convoluted, and convulsively funny pun-ridden puzzles in the game. But players who rely on it are missing out. Sometimes it's much funnier to do things the wrong way, because the sharp-minded developers probably already thought of it and are ready to reward you with a humorous comment or action. Completely hilarious, drop-dead gorgeous, and always innovative LucasArts proves once and for all there is ample life left in the adventure genre. --Andrew S. Bub Pros: Excellent voice acting and writing Very funny Challenging for players of all skill levels Cons: The controls could be a little more streamlined

Escape from Monkey Island continues in the hilarious tradition of its critically hailed and award-winning predecessors, The Secret of Monkey Island, Monkey Island 2: Le Chuck's Revenge, and The Curse of Monkey Island. Developed by the team who created LucasArts's irreverent classic Sam and Max Hit the Road, Escape features an original cinematic story full of drama, intrigue, and of course, sidesplitting humor. The game is highlighted by hundreds of challenging puzzles, set amidst dozens of rich and brilliantly rendered backgrounds. The day fast approaches when Guybrush Threepwood, Elaine Marley-Threepwood, Stan of Stan's Previously Owned Vessels, and the other bizarre characters from the beloved, anachronistic Monkey series come back to PC shores.

Braveheart Braveheart
List Price: $19.99
Sale Price: $4.40

Mel Gibson's Oscar-winning 1995 Braveheart is an impassioned epic about William Wallace, the 13th-century Scottish leader of a popular revolt against England's tyrannical Edward I (Patrick McGoohan). Gibson cannily plays Wallace as a man trying to stay out of history's way until events force his hand, an attribute that instantly resonates with several of the actor's best-known roles, especially Mad Max. The subsequent camaraderie and courage Wallace shares in the field with fellow warriors is pure enough and inspiring enough to bring envy to a viewer, and even as things go wrong for Wallace in the second half, the film does not easily cave in to a somber tone. One of the most impressive elements is the originality with which Gibson films battle scenes, featuring hundreds of extras wielding medieval weapons. After Eisenstein's Alexander Nevsky, Orson Welles's Chimes at Midnight, and even Kenneth Branagh's Henry V, you might think there is little new that could be done in creating scenes of ancient combat; yet Gibson does it. --Tom Keogh

Director/star Mel Gibson took home Best Picture and Best Director Academy Awards for this historical epic about 13th-century Scottish hero William Wallace, a farmer forced into fighting the forces of England's King Edward I after they kill his father and new wife. Highlighted by amazing battle scenes, the passionate saga also stars Patrick McGoohan, Sophie Marceau, and Catherine McCormick. 177 min. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital 5.1, Dolby Digital Surround, French Dolby Digital Surround; Subtitles: English; audio commentary by Gibson; "making of" documentary; theatrical trailers. Ever After - A Cinderella Story Ever After - A Cinderella Story
List Price: $14.98
Sale Price: $3.59

Take away the Fairy Godmother, and what have you got left from the Cinderella fable? The story of a girl for whom a bad stroke of luck is no match for her internal strength and purity of heart. Drew Barrymore plays Cinderella's alleged inspiration, Danielle, in this romantic drama that purports to tell the "facts" behind the Grimm brothers' story. One of three daughters of a man (Jeroen Krabbé) who dies and leaves her fate in the hands of a conniving stepmother (Anjelica Huston), Danielle is cast into the lowly role of a servant. Meanwhile, her sisters are evaluated as possible mates for a French prince (Dougray Scott), but he's far more intrigued with Danielle's intelligence and beauty--not to mention her way with a sword and fist. Directed by Andy Tennant (who directed Barrymore in TV's The Amy Fisher Story), Ever After has that rare ability to win the heart and mind of a viewer simply by being committed to its own innocence, particularly where Barrymore's luminous performance is concerned. A contemporary take on an old, virtually forgotten Hollywood convention--the costume adventure with middling artistic ambition but real audience appeal--Ever After is a surprisingly delightful film. --Tom Keogh

Features include: •MPAA Rating: PG-13•Format: DVD•Runtime: 121 minutes

Inglourious Basterds [Blu-ray] Inglourious Basterds [Blu-ray]
List Price: $19.98
Sale Price: $8.36

Although Quentin Tarantino has cherished Enzo G. Castellari's 1978 "macaroni" war flick The Inglorious Bastards for most of his film-geek life, his own Inglourious Basterds is no remake. Instead, as hinted by the Tarantino-esque misspelling, this is a lunatic fantasia of WWII, a brazen re-imagining of both history and the behind-enemy-lines war film subgenre. There's a Dirty Not-Quite-Dozen of mostly Jewish commandos, led by a Tennessee good ol' boy named Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt) who reckons each warrior owes him one hundred Nazi scalps--and he means that literally. Even as Raine's band strikes terror into the Nazi occupiers of France, a diabolically smart and self-assured German officer named Landa (Christoph Waltz) is busy validating his own legend as "The Jew Hunter." Along the way, he wipes out the rural family of a grave young girl (Melanie Laurent) who will reappear years later in Paris, dreaming of vengeance on an epic scale. Now, this isn't one more big-screen comic book. As the masterly opening sequence reaffirms, Tarantino is a true filmmaker, with a deep respect for the integrity of screen space and the tension that can accumulate in contemplating two men seated at a table having a polite conversation. IB reunites QT with cinematographer Robert Richardson (who shot Kill Bill), and the colors and textures they serve up can be riveting, from the eerie red-hot glow of a tabletop in Adolf Hitler's den, to the creamy swirl of a Parisian pastry in which Landa parks his cigarette. The action has been divided, Pulp Fiction-like, into five chapters, each featuring at least one spellbinding set-piece. It's testimony to the integrity we mentioned that Tarantino can lock in the ferocious suspense of a scene for minutes on end, then explode the situation almost faster than the eye and ear can register, and then take the rest of the sequence to a new, wholly unanticipated level within seconds. Again, be warned: This is not your "Greatest Generation," Saving Private Ryan WWII. The sadism of Raine and his boys can be as unsavory as the Nazi variety; Tarantino's latest cinematic protégé, Eli (director of Hostel) Roth, is aptly cast as a self-styled "golem" fond of pulping Nazis with a baseball bat. But get past that, and the sometimes disconcerting shifts to another location and another set of characters, and the movie should gather you up like a growing floodtide. Tarantino told the Cannes Film Festival audience that he wanted to show "Adolf Hitler defeated by cinema." Cinema wins. --Richard T. Jameson

Brad Pitt stars as a U.S. Army officer who leads a group of Jewish-American soldiers on a mission: kill as many Nazis as possible. When it's learned that Hitler will be at a film premiere in occupied Paris, Pitt's team hatches a plan to take him out. Meanwhile, the theater operator (Melanie Laurent) plots to burn it down to exact revenge on the German colonel (Best Supporting Actor Oscar-Winner Christoph Waltz) who slaughtered her family. Eli Roth and Mike Myers co-star in Quentin Tarantino's WWII actioner. 153 min. Widescreen; Soundtracks: DTS HD 5.1 Master Audio, French DTS 5.1, Spanish DTS 5.1; Subtitles: English (SDH), French, Spanish; featurettes; extended scenes; alternate scenes; photo gallery; poster gallery; theatrical trailers; bonus digital copy for PC; more. Two-disc set. Also includes the bonus feature "Inglorious Bastards" (1978).

Nothing gets a toddler's attention faster than music, particularly songs they know and love to dance around to. Plan for different ways you can incorporate music into different activities at your Sesame Street birthday party. This could actually help set the theme for you better than expensive themed party decorations.

Specific songs into games

Sesame Street has so many of its own great songs - the theme song, People In My Neighborhood, Rubber Duckie, Doin' the Pigeon, C is for Cookie, Put Down the Duckie. (You humming something yet?) In addition, singers have come on the Street over the years to do versions of their songs tailored for the kids. Any one of these could be turned into its own game.

For example, with one of the rubber duck songs, you could have the kids duck down every time they sing the word duckie. Or have them do the pigeon dance. Or make up a dance or motions that you teach them in the course of the song itself.

With the celebrity songs, there are some great options. "A New Way to Walk" by Destiny's Child becomes a version of Red Light, Green Light, or "Furry Happy Monsters" by REM becomes an emoting/acting game.

Sing-a-long time

There are some songs that just everyone knows, including the grown-ups. C is for Cookie, the Sesame Street theme song, Elmo's World, the alphabet song. Cue up these guys either from a CD or DVD and have at it for a few minutes. This could even be a game and give some prizes for loudest singer, softest singer, best dance moves, etc.

You could do several sing-along times of a single song, then tie the song into the game you play afterward. Look to "I Love Trash" by Oscar (trash toss) or "Over Under Around and Through" by Grover (follow the leader) or "I've Got Two" by Big Bird (matching game) for some ideas. This also allows you to work your child's favorite character into the party a little more.

Background

Of course, the easiest way is to just set up a CD player with the music going and going just in the background behind all the other activities. This actually works great for the non-organized times - like when guests are arriving or eating. The stopping and starting of the music can serve as the signal to return to the more organized activities.

These are just a few ideas for how to use music in your Sesame Street birthday party. There are lots of other ways to get creative with your theme using music. Pop in a CD and start noodling!

You'll find Susan Lewis at the corner of Sesame Street and birthday parties. Susan lives for creative ideas and loves to share them with ... well, pretty much everyone. Although she's getting close to *cough* 40, she still adores Sesame Street. Check out her blog with great Sesame Street ideas for games, activities, decorations, cakes and more over at Sesame Street Birthday. Come by to pick up a few ideas and leave a few of your own.

The Olympic Games - The History Of The Olympic Games

Olympics or The Olympic Games is a multi-sports event which takes place once in four years and comprises of winter and summer games. It is an international event and almost all the countries in the globe participate in the games.

The first Olympic game was held in the year 776 BC in Olympia, Greece. The games were held in Greece till 393 AD. Subsequently in 1896, Pierre Fredy, Baron de Coubertin, a French nobleman revived the games which heralded the beginning of the Modern Olympic Games.

Starting from 1896, Games of the Olympiad or The Summer Olympics were held once in four years except during the World War 1 and 2.

The Olympic Winter Games, a special edition of winter sports was first held in 1924. In the beginning, both summer and winter editions of The Olympic Games were held simultaneously. From 1944 onwards the summer and winter games have been held two years apart.

The origin of the ancient Olympic Games was surrounded by many legends. The ancient Greek concept of Olympic Truce is one such legend associated with The Olympic Games. The Olympic Games reached their zenith during fifth and sixth century BC.

The Olympic Games were held in honour of Pelops a mythical king and divine hero of the Greeks. Poems were written and statues were created immortalizing the winners of the events in the Olympic Games. Milo of Croton, a wrestler in the sixth century BC, was the only victorious athlete in six Olympic Games.

After the Romans captured power in Greece, there was a gradual decline in the importance of the Olympic Games. The Emperor Theodosius banned the Olympic Games in 393 CE citing the games as a Pagan Festival not suitable for the Christian Ethics.

Even though the Greek ceremonies included the bearing of a torch as its integral aspect, it was not included in the ancient Olympic Games. This was introduced later as a part of the modern Olympic Games.

In the 2004 Summer Olympics held in Athens, nearly 11,100 contestants from 202 countries participated in various events whereas there were only 245 participants from 15 nations in the 1896 edition of the Olympic Games. The Olympic Games has become one of the biggest events for the media. In the Sydney Olympics held in 2000, more than 16,000 journalists presented the events in various media format while 3.8 billion people watched the games on Television.

Munich Olympics held in 1972 saw the first act of terrorism in the .Olympic Games. Subsequently the Summer Olympics held in Atlanta, Georgia in 1996, and the Winter Olympics held in Salt Lake City, Utah in 2002 were also subjected to acts of terrorism.

For the Olympic Games scheduled to take place in London in 2012, 26 sports are included.

What was the first video game to include voice acting?

I don't mean voice sound effects like on Mario 64 or Zelda OoT whenever an attack was performed. Voice acting for instructions or dialogue.

I don't know it's kind of difficult to pinpoint Gabriel Knight 3 had voice acting and it's a fairly old game and so did Curse of Monkey Island.
